Mike Flanagan, the director of The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, became one of Netflix^/s go-to people for horror programmes. With the release of The Midnight Club, his third series, Midnight Mass, launched a second franchise. This most recent series, however, also borrows from another master of teen horror, Christopher Pike, making it a double-barreled terrifying shot. The songs from The Midnight Club^/s Season 1 soundtrack take Pike^/s setting from the 1990s and transform it into a modern-day ode to classic jams.
The following contains Season 1 spoilers for The Midnight Club. Pike^/s The Midnight Club, which was first released in 1994, was set in the current hospice facility for young people with terminal diseases. However, Flanagan^/s adaptation is a little more overt and filled with jump scares, whereas Pike^/s book is a slow-build thriller.

The book^/s original 1990s setting is the one aspect of the series that does not change. The lives of terminally sick children may have a little more technology to deal with, but the unfairness of their shorter lives and the struggle with mortality are the same. The Midnight Club could have easily been changed to a modern series. However, Flanagan preserved Pike^/s world in its pre-broadband internet environment, giving the soundtrack the opportunity to bring back a number of songs from an era before Spotify.
