Kim Woo-bin is a South Korean actor and model who was born Kim Hyun-joong on July 16, 1989. He started out as a runway model before making his acting debut in the television drama White Christmas. He gained attention after appearing in A Gentleman's Dignity (2012) and made his breakthrough with School 2013 (2012-2013) and The Heirs (2013-2014). (2013). Kim later appeared in the box office hits Friend: The Great Legacy (2013), The Con Artists (2014), and Twenty Years Later (2015). (2015). Uncontrollably Fond was his first television leading role in 2016.
Kim's agency announced in May 2017 that he would be taking a break after being diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer. Kim made a comeback in 2022 with the TV series Our Blues and Black Knight, as well as the sci-fi action film Alienoid, directed by Choi Dong-hoon.
Career
2009-2012: The Beginning
Kim has always wanted to be a model since he was in high school. At the age of 20, he made his runway debut in 2009 and began appearing in prêt-à-porter and Seoul Fashion Week collections.
As his modeling career progressed, he began doing commercial films and studying acting under acting coach Moon Won-joo. "I found myself feeling the same thrill and enthusiasm that I felt the first time I came to walk on the runway," Kim says of her love of acting.
In 2011, he made his acting debut as Kim Woo-bin in the mystery drama White Christmas and the low-rated cable sitcom Vampire Idol.
In 2012, he appeared as a supporting actor in Kim Eun-romantic sook's comedy drama A Gentleman's Dignity. Following that, she appeared in two episodes of the drama adaptation of the popular manga To the Beautiful You.
Rising popularity in 2013
Kim's breakthrough year was 2013, when she had two hit dramas and one film. He starred in the teen drama School 2013 from late December to early 2013. At the 2nd APAN Star Awards, he received his first acting award for the role, in the category of Best New Actor.
He was cast in Kim Eun-teen sook's drama The Heirs the same year, which became popular both domestically and internationally, with a peak audience rating of 28.6% and 1 million hits on the Chinese streaming website iQiyi. Kim's international popularity skyrocketed. This resulted in more advertising contracts and acting opportunities for the actor.
Kim then made his feature film debut in Friend: The Great Legacy, the sequel to Kwak Kyung-2001 taek's box office smash. He received favorable feedback for his portrayal of a young gang member. The same year, he took over as host of the cable music show M! Countdown to February 13, 2014, starting on August 15, 2013.
2014-2017: Film success and a break
Kim continued to appear in big-screen projects after his meteoric rise in 2013. In January 2014, he was cast as a top safecracker in the heist film The Con Artists, alongside rising star Lee Hyun-woo. In 2015, he played a comedic role in indie director Lee Byung-sophomore heon's effort Twenty.
Kim then appeared in an ad campaign for Calvin Klein Watches + Jewelry, becoming the brand's first East Asian model.
Kim made his television debut in the melodrama Uncontrollably Fond, written by screenwriter Lee Kyung-hee, in 2015. The show debuted on July 6, 2016.
He then appeared in the crime thriller Master alongside Lee Byung-hun and Kang Dong-won. The film was released in December 2016 and quickly became the 11th best-selling film in South Korea.
Kim was cast in Choi Dong-crime hoon's caper film Wiretap in 2017. The project has since been halted to allow Kim to seek cancer treatment.
Return to the screen, 2020-present
Kim will return to the big screen in Choi Dong-upcoming hoon's sci-fi film Alienoid alongside Ryu Jun-yeol and Kim Tae-ri, according to AM Entertainment on March 11, 2020. Kim played the role of 'Guard,' a person in charge of managing alien prisoners, in the film, which premiered in July 2022.
Kim will also appear in acclaimed screenwriter Noh Hee-television kyung's series Our Blues in 2022, and will star in Netflix original series Black Knight.
Kim has been best friends with fellow model-actor and School 2013 co-star Lee Jong-suk since their modeling days.
Relationship
Kim has been in a relationship with model-actress Shin Min-a since May 2015.
Health
Kim was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer on May 24, 2017. Kim's agency, Sidus HQ, stated that he had begun drug and radiation treatment and that all activities would be suspended. Kim announced in a letter on December 29 that he had completed his cancer treatment plan. He was, however, exempt from military service.
On March 8, 2022, Kim donated $100 million to the Hope Bridge Disaster Relief Association to assist victims of the massive wildfires that began in Uljin, Gyeongbuk and spread to Samcheok, Gangwon. Kim sent gifts and a handwritten letter to about 200 children in the children's ward of Asan Hospital in Seoul on Christmas Day.
Kim donated 100 million won to Asan Medical Center in Seoul in January 2023; the donation will be used to support the treatment of poor patients.
Ambassadorial duties
Kim was named honorary ambassador for his alma mater, Jeonju University, in 2013. The same year, he was named public relations ambassador for the 2013 Suwon Information Science Festival, as well as ambassador for the Korean Film Council and Film Federation Against Piracy's "Good Downloader Campaign."
Kim was named the promotional ambassador for CJ CGV's arthouse exhibition chain CGV ARTHOUSE in 2015.
Kim was named an honorary ambassador for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in April 2017. Kim is the second actor to play this role, and he was scheduled to participate in various activities to promote the event. However, he was removed from the role in October due to his ongoing cancer treatments.
