Kang Ha-neul is a South Korean actor who was born Kim Ha-neul on February 21, 1990. He is best known for his roles in the television dramas The Heirs (2013), Misaeng: Incomplete Life (2014), Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016), When the Camellia Blooms (2019), and Insider (2022) ; as well as the films Mourning Grave (2014), Twenty (2015), Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet (2016), New Trial (2017), Midnight Runners (2017), Forgotten (2017), and The Pirates: The Last (2022).
Kang won the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actor - Television in 2020 and was ranked 23rd on Forbes Korea Power Celebrity's annual list.
Career
Kang began his career in musical theater, appearing most notably in Thrill Me (2010), Prince Puzzle (2011), Black Mary Poppins (2012), and Assassins (2013). (2012). He later made the transition to film, appearing in the television dramas To the Beautiful You (2012), The Heirs (2013), and Misaeng: Incomplete Life (2014). (2014).
Kang had a busy year in 2015, appearing in three films: the musical film C'est si bon, the period film Empire of Lust, and the coming-of-age film Twenty, for which he received several Best New Actor awards and nominations.
Kang in August of this year
Kang starred as the titular poet Yun Dong-ju in the black and white biographical period film Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet in 2016. He received Best Actor nominations for his role as Yun Dong-ju at the 25th Buil Film Awards and the 4th Wildflower Film Awards. He also appeared in the romantic comedy film Like for Likes as a young songwriter with a hearing impairment. The following year, he co-starred in the historical drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo as 8th Prince Wang Wook, for which he received an Excellence Award at the 2016 SBS Drama Awards.
Kang appeared in the 2017 film New Trial as a young man who spent a decade in prison following an abusive investigation for a crime he did not commit. He then co-starred in the action comedy film Midnight Runners with Park Seo-joon, playing a nerdy student at the Korean National Police University. The film was a success, becoming South Korea's fourth highest-grossing film in 2017. In the same year, he co-starred in the mystery thriller film Forgotten with Kim Mu-yeol.
Kang co-starred in the military musical Shinheung Military Academy with fellow actor Ji Chang-wook and K-Pop idol Kim Sung-kyu from Infinite in September 2018. The musical is regarded as one of the largest productions of the Republic of Korea Army, with a total audience of 110,000 viewers recorded. Kang was nominated for Best Actor at the 7th Yegreen Musical Awards for his performance as Paldo.
Kang made a comeback in the entertainment industry in 2019 with the KBS2 TV series When the Camellia Blooms, co-starring Gong Hyo-jin. The drama received high marks from critics and was the highest-rated miniseries of 2019. It also earned Kang a slew of awards and critical acclaim, including the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actor - Television.
Kang's contract with SEM Company, his agency since 2010, expired in November 2019, and he joined his former manager in the newly established entertainment agency, TH Company. Kang returned to the stage in Fantasy Tale in January 2020, his first performance since Harold and Maude in 2015.
Kang returned to the big screen in 2021 with Waiting for Rain, playing Young Ho, a man who lives his life aimlessly while exchanging letters with his lover. The following year, he was cast in the mystery thriller film Streaming, in which Kang's character runs a popular YouTube channel based on criminal profiling. The plot follows him as he solves a murder case via live streaming.
Kang appeared in The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure, a sequel to the blockbuster hit The Pirates, in 2022. Later that year, he appeared in the JTBC series Insider as a judicial trainee who goes undercover in prison to apprehend a gang leader.
Private life
Kang began his mandatory military service at the Nonsan Korean Army Training Center on September 11, 2017. Kang was recognized for his outstanding performance during basic training during the completion ceremony on October 24. Kang was appointed honorary ambassador of the Military Manpower Administration on February 22, 2019. (MMA). The event was held at the Air Force Hall in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. Kang participated in MMA events as an honorary ambassador until December 2019. Kang was released from the hospital on May 23, 2019.
