Alexander Draper Wolff (born November 1, 1997) is a musician and actor from the United States. He rose to prominence after co-starring with his older brother Nat in the Nickelodeon musical comedy series The Naked Brothers Band (2007-09), created by the boys' mother Polly Draper. Wolff and his brother, co-produced by their father Michael Wolff, released two soundtrack albums for the series, The Naked Brothers Band and I Don't Want to Go to School. Following the conclusion of the Nickelodeon series, Wolff and his older brother formed the Nat & Alex Wolff duo, releasing the albums Black Sheep (2011) and Public Places (2012). (2016). The brothers also appeared in Stella's Last Weekend, a comedy-drama directed by their mother (2018).
Wolff made a name for himself in film, playing Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in Patriots Day (2016) and John "Derf" Backderf in My Friend Dahmer (2017). Other films in which he has appeared include My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), and Hereditary (2018). Wolff made his directorial debut with The Cat and the Moon, a drama film (2019).
Wolff grew up in Manhattan, New York City, the daughter of actress and writer Polly Draper and jazz pianist Michael Wolff. Nat Wolff, an actor and musician, is his younger brother. His mother is Christian and his father is Jewish. Wolff is the maternal grandson of businessman and civic leader William Henry Draper III, the nephew of businessman Tim Draper, the cousin of actress Jesse Draper, and the great-grandson of banker and diplomat William Henry Draper Jr.
Wolff made his acting debut at the age of six in his mother's 2005 musical comedy film The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie. Nickelodeon commissioned it as the pilot for the television series The Naked Brothers Band (2007-2009), which his mother also created, produced, wrote, and directed. He provided lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation for both the film and the series, while their father produced and oversaw the music. The soundtrack albums for the show were released, and the song "Crazy Car" peaked at #83 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
He played the young boy in the Fall Out Boy music video "The Take Over, The Breaks Over" in 2007. In 2009, Wolff appeared in the Nickelodeon TV movie Mr. Troop Mom and the USA police procedural, comedic television drama Monk. In 2010, he also appeared in his mother's playwriting What Would Woody Do? at The Flea Theater and the HBO medical drama In Treatment. Wolff later appeared in the comedy film The Sitter (2011) and in the independent film HairBrained with Brendan Fraser (2012).
He appeared in the indie drama Coming Through the Rye in 2015. In 2016, he appeared in the comedy sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and portrayed terrorist Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the drama Patriots Day, which was inspired by the Boston Marathon bombing.
Wolff appeared in the supernatural horror film Hereditary in 2018. With 2019's The Cat and the Moon, which he also wrote and starred in, he made his directorial debut.
Brando Crawford created, directed, and produced Acting for a Cause, a live classic play and screenplay reading series, in 2020. Wolff portrayed Algernon in Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest and Warren Straub in Kenneth Lonergan's This Is Our Youth. The reading raised money for non-profit organizations such as Mount Sinai Medical Center. The second reading was co-produced by Wolff.
Awards
Wolff received a Broadcast Music, Inc. Cable Award in 2007, an Audience Award for a Family Feature Film at the Hamptons International Film Festival in 2005, and was nominated for a Young Artist Award in both 2008 and 2009. In 2013, he was also awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Achievement for Best Actor at the Brooklyn International Film Festival for his performance in the film HairBrained. Wolff received the Auteur Award at the San Diego International Film Festival on October 11, 2018.
He was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film Castle in the Ground at the 9th Canadian Screen Awards in 2021.
