Stephen Fry Joins the Celebrity Exodus After Quitting Twitter With a Scrabble Message

Nov 09, 2022 By Rohan Verma 74 Reads

Stephen Fry has become the latest public figure to join the mass Twitter exodus.

Stephen Fry is the most recent well-known person to leave Twitter.

On Tuesday, November 8, the Sandman actor, who will soon be featured on The Morning Show, announced his departure from the social media site by sharing a picture of Scrabble letters that together formed the word "Goodbye." Fry joins a long list of famous people who have quit Twitter in the wake of Elon Musk's official takeover of the social media site on October 28.

Whoopi Goldberg, Shonda Rhimes, Gigi Hadid, Sara Bareilles, Toni Braxton, and executive producer of This Is Us Ken Olin have all left the service as a result of the Tesla CEO's proposed modifications, which include a monthly price of $8 to earn a verified blue check mark.
When Twitter originally launched in 2008, Fry was one of the first famous people to sign up. By Tuesday, he had 12.5 million followers. He had, however, previously disabled his account. The actor has had a contentious history with the app; throughout the years, he has deactivated his account a total of five times.

Following criticism of his "bag woman" remark about costume designer Jenny Beavan after she won the BAFTA for her work on Mad Max: Fury Road in 2016, Fry temporarily stopped using Twitter. Later, Beavan defended Fry's remarks by pointing out that the two were good friends and that it was an inside joke between them.

Finally, Netflix has renewed "The Sandman" for a second season.
So where are these famous people going? Mastodon appears to be the preferred social networking app at the moment. A Mastodon account with Fry's name on it appeared on Monday, however its authenticity has not yet been established.

Since Musk's acquisition of Twitter, Mastodon, a free and open-source programme for microblogging, has seen a sharp increase in subscribers. On October 28 there were 381,113 active users, and by November 7 there were more over 1 million. The burgeoning social media network has already attracted users including DC CEO James Gunn, climate activist Greta Thunberg, and comic Kathy Griffin (who was suspended from Twitter for mimicking Musk).
