Tong Liya (born August 8, 1983) is a Chinese actress of Xibe ethnicity.
Background
Tong was born in Xinjiang province's Qapqal Xibe Autonomous County, Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. Her father, Tong Jisheng (), was of Xibe origin from Xinjiang, and her mother, Mao Haiying (), was of Han origin from Gansu.
Tong majored in dance at the Xinjiang Arts Institute and, as a result of her excellent grades, was able to join the Xinjiang Singing & Dancing Troupe. In 2000, she earned a certificate to teach dance at Xinjiang Arts Institute. She enrolled in Central Academy of Drama in 2004, majoring in performance.
Tong was appointed Xibe Ambassador in 2011.
Career
Tong made her debut in the Hong Kong television series C'est La Vie, Mon Chéri in 2008, and she quickly gained attention for her stunning appearance. Tong rose to prominence after starring as Zhao Feiyan in the 2009 historical drama The Queens.
With her subsequent roles in Palace (2011) and Beijing Love Story (2012), Tong successfully broke into the mainstream. Tong has played a variety of roles in hit dramas such as My Economical Man (2012), Weaning (2013), Sword Family Woman (2014), and Obstetrician (2014), and has been dubbed the "Ratings Queen" by the Chinese media. She has also appeared in a number of films, including Tsui Hark's wuxia film The Taking of Tiger Mountain (2014) and Chen Sicheng's comedy film Detective Chinatown (2015).
Tong appeared in the period drama Ordinary World (2015), based on Lu Yao's novel of the same name, which won the Mao Dun Literature Prize in 2015. She was praised for her performance and was awarded the Golden Eagle Award for Best Actress.
Tong appeared in the wuxia drama Nirvana in Fire 2, the sequel to Hai Yan's critically acclaimed drama Nirvana in Fire.
Tong appeared in two spy dramas in 2018. In Great Expectations, she portrayed a wealthy lady who disguises herself as a man in order to infiltrate the underworld and exact revenge on her deceased father. She portrayed an underground spy in Patriot. Tong's portrayal earned her the Audience's Favorite Character award at the China TV Drama Awards. The same year, Tong received critical acclaim and numerous awards for her performance in the romantic comedy film How Long Will I Love You.
In January 2020, she appeared as a public relations officer in the workplace drama Perfect Partner.
Personal life
On January 16, 2014, Tong married actor Chen Sicheng. Chen directed and co-scripted the television series Beijing Love Story, where the couple met and fell in love. In 2012, they announced their relationship on the set of Happy Camp. The couple married in Tahiti in 2014.
Tong announced the birth of their first child, a son named Chen Duoduo, on January 30, 2016. Tong and Chen announced their divorce on May 20, 2021.
