Shin Se-kyung (born July 29, 1990) is a South Korean actress, model, and singer. She began her career as a child actress and made her breakthrough with the 2009 sitcom High Kick Through the Roof. She has since appeared in the films Hindsight (2011), R2B: Return to Base (2012), and Tazza: The Hidden Card (2014), as well as the television series Deep Rooted Tree (2011), The Girl Who Sees Smells (2015), Six Flying Dragons (2015-2016), The Bride of Habaek (2017), Black Knight: The Man Who Guards Me (2017-2018), Rookie Historian Goo Hae-Ryung (2019), (2020).
She was ranked 26th in 2011 and 14th in 2012 by Forbes as one of the 40 most powerful celebrities in Korea.
Childhood and education
Shin was born in Yangcheon, Seoul, South Korea, on July 29, 1990. She attended Shinmok High School before attending Chung-Ang University and majoring in Performing Arts.
Career s1998–2009: Childhood as a child actress
Shin made her entertainment debut when she was eight years old, appearing on the cover and poster for Seo Taiji's solo album Take Five in 1998. Shin Se Kyung was already well-known in Korea as a child actress for her role in the popular children's show Ppo Ppo Ppo, which also starred Big Bang's G-Dragon. She spent her childhood hosting children's television shows.
Following a small role in My Little Bride, she went on to star in Cinderella, omnibus films Acoustic and Five Senses of Eros, and a well-received role as the younger version of Princess Cheonmyeong in Queen Seondeok.
From 2009 to 2014, there was an increase in popularity and a shift in roles.
Shin did not establish a large fan base until her breakthrough role as a housemaid in the second season of the popular TV sitcom High Kick! in 2009. Shin used her sitcom fame to sign on to numerous television commercials and print advertisements, becoming one of the most sought-after celebrity endorsers. High-profile acting roles followed, including film noir Hindsight with Song Kang-ho, the critically acclaimed historical drama Deep Rooted Tree with Jang Hyuk and Han Suk-kyu, and the aerial action film R2B: Return to Base with Rain.
In March of 2015,
Shin's subsequent project, Fashion King (2012), was met with critical acclaim, particularly for its contentious ending. Shin then released her first digital single, "You Were Sweet," to promote a coffee franchise for which she models. Shin, a former middle school singer trainee, has also contributed songs to the soundtrack of Hindsight, the charity album Love Tree Project, and her own singing in the showcase piece Acoustic. She recorded a Christmas carol duet with Epitone Project in 2012.
Shin returned to television in the 2013 melodrama When a Man Falls in Love, opposite Song Seung-heon, but her passive character drew criticism from viewers. She had a more "bold and confident" role in Tazza: The Hidden Card in 2014, followed by the fantasy-action series Blade Man.
Resurgence and comeback from 2015 to the present
Shin, in a departure from her usual dramatic roles, starred as the titular character in the webtoon adaptation The Girl Who Sees Smells in 2015. Shin later reunited with Fashion King co-star Yoo Ah-in in Six Flying Dragons (2015-2016), another period drama from Deep Rooted Tree's screenwriters.
Shin co-starred in tvN's fantasy-romance drama The Bride of Habaek with Nam Joo-hyuk in 2017. This will be followed shortly by another fantasy-romance drama starring Kim Rae-won, Black Knight: The Man Who Guards Me.
Shin co-starred in the 2019 historical drama Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung with Cha Eun-woo. Shin co-starred in JTBC's romance drama Run On in 2020-2021, alongside Im Si-Wan.
Shin signed an exclusive contract with EDAM Entertainment (a subsidiary of Kakao Entertainment) on July 5, 2021, after her contract with Namoo Actors expired.
Private life
Shin began dating SHINee member Kim Jonghyun in October 2010 and ended their relationship in June 2011.
Ambassadorial duties
Shin was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for UNESCO's Korean Committee on January 15, 2014. The award recognises her contributions to promoting Korean culture and education, as well as her advocacy for the Korean language, which includes her appearance in Deep Rooted Tree. In this capacity, she supports the vision and mission of the UNESCO bridge programme, both within and outside of Korea. Shin was named Korea's hanbok ambassador. On October 20, 2017, she attended the hanbok runway show.
Shin made a donation from YouTube profits to support sanitary napkins for teenage girls in Korea on December 20, 2022, through the G Foundation.
