Nam Joo-hyuk (Korean: ; born February 22, 1994) is a model and actor from South Korea. He began his career as a model, appearing in several music videos before making his screen debut with The Idle Mermaid in 2014. He first gained attention for his role in the television series Who Are You: School 2015 (2015), and he has since become well-known for his leading roles in Weightlifting Fairy. Kim Bok-joo (2016), The Bride of Habaek (2017), The Light in Your Eyes (2019), The School Nurse Files (2020), Start Up (2020), and Twenty-Five Twenty-One (2022) are some of the films he has directed.
Nam was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 list in 2021 as a result of his successful acting and modelling career.
Early years
Nam Joo-hyuk was born in Busan, South Korea, on February 22, 1994. Nam dreamed of becoming a professional basketball player during his studies at Gyeongnam Middle School, so he played on the basketball team for three years. However, after suffering an injury and later undergoing surgery, his basketball days were cut short.
After relocating to Seoul, he won the K-Plus-sponsored Top Model competition. Nam soon signed an exclusive contract with the modelling agency.
YGKPlus and music video appearances in 2013-2014
Nam made her modelling debut in 2013 for the SONGZIO Homme 2014 S/S collection.
In 2014, he appeared in fellow YG Entertainment artist Akdong Musician's music videos 200% and Give Love. Soon after, he made his acting debut in the tvN drama The Idle Mermaid as a supporting role.
2015-2018: Increasing popularity and debut on the big screen
Nam landed his first major role in KBS's coming-of-age teen drama Who Are You: School 2015, in which he played Han Yi-an, a high school student who faces growing pains such as a crush on a classmate and injuries that jeopardise his swimming career. With his appearance in the series, he gained attention and went on to win several awards, including Best New Actor at the 4th APAN Star Awards and Popularity Award at the 2015 KBS Drama Awards.
In 2016, he appeared in the college romance series Cheese in the Trap and the historical drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo as a supporting actor. Nam joined the cast of the variety show Three Meals a Day the following year. He then co-starred in the youth sports drama Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo with Lee Sung-kyung, portraying Jung Joon-hyung, a talented yet playful swimmer. Nam's performance in the series received positive feedback and helped him gain wider recognition.
In 2017, he starred in tvN's fantasy romance series The Bride of Habaek alongside Shin Se-kyung as a narcissistic Water God seeking his rightful throne. Then, in 2018, Nam made his big screen debut in the historical film The Great Battle. 2019–present: Transition to more senior positions
Nam received positive feedback for his performance in the fantasy romance drama The Light In Your Eyes, which he co-starred in with Han Ji-min and Kim Hye-ja in 2019.
Nam appeared in the Netflix supernatural crime drama The School Nurse Files and the tvN romance series Start-Up in 2020. Nam also appeared in the romance film Josée, a remake of the 2003 Japanese film Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, the same year. Nam reunites with The Light In Your Eyes co-star Han Ji-min in the film. Nam was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 Asia list in the "Entertainment & Sports" category in 2021, thanks to the success of The School Nurse Files and Start-Up.
Nam then co-directed the tvN drama Twenty-Five Twenty-One with Kim Tae-ri. The series, which tells the story of a man and a woman who met during the 1998 IMF crisis, premiered in February 2022. He received positive feedback for his portrayal of the character Baek Yi-jin, with Korean media outlet OSEN referring to Nam as the "symbol of youth" as they praised his acting abilities, resulting in what is known as the "Joohyuk's Pain" syndrome. Kim Bo-ra, a writer, described him as having a "solid physique, warm-hearted visuals, and deep sensibility" that made him "look like a character in a teen comic." "[Nam's] affectionate warm voice and clear gaze make viewers' hearts flutter and fall for Baek Yi-jin," Kim continues.
Nam appeared in the film Remember, which opened in theatres on October 26, 2022. He portrayed a young man who assists an Alzheimer's patient in exacting revenge. His performance was described as "showing sympathy that transcends generations in a way that only [Nam] can."
Nam will play a leading role in the upcoming drama Vigilante, which is based on Kim Gyu-Naver san's webtoon of the same name. He'll play a police college student who moonlights as the titular vigilante.

Nam was signed as the clothing brand's new model in November 2017 and became one of its brand ambassadors. Nam was officially announced as the brand ambassador of Dior Men in Asia on April 17, 2019.
Philanthropy
On April 6, 2019, it was reported that Nam had donated approximately 30 million won to the Hope Bridge Association of National Disaster Relief for victims of the Gangwon Province wildfire in South Korea. He donated 50 million won to the Daegu Social Welfare Community Chest in February 2020 to be used for quarantine supplies and medical support to prevent COVID-19.
Public perception
On June 20, 2022, a netizen claimed that he was a former bully victim and that Nam Joo-hyuk was the perpetrator of his bullying during his six years in middle and high school, claiming that Nam was part of a group of bullies who harassed him. Nam's management company denied the allegations, saying they were false, and that they would file criminal charges against the netizen. On June 28, another person accused Nam of bullying at school, which his management denied once more. On July 5, the Korean news outlet Dispatch published an article in which 20 people, including two high school teachers and 18 of Nam's classmates, defended him against the allegations.
Private life
Service in the military
Nam was reported to be enlisting in the military in December 2022 on October 17, 2022. Nam was scheduled to serve in the mandatory military service in December, according to the agency, but he has yet to receive an official summons.
Nam will join the Capital Defense Command Military Police Group as a military police officer riot squad on March 20, 2023, it was announced on January 31, 2023.
