Biography
The early years
Maria Wasti was born in Tanzania's Dar es Salaam. She grew up there before moving to Pakistan with her family. She is Rizwan Wasti's and Tahira Wasti's niece. Wasti's parents wanted her to be a doctor, but she preferred to work in the entertainment industry. The government-owned Pakistan Television Corporation was the country's only television network at the time (PTV). Later in the 1990s, Network Television Marketing (NTM), the country's first privately owned channel, featured content specifically targeted to the young generation, and Wasti developed an interest in acting.
The first teleplay
Bakhtiar Ahmed, the programme manager of PTV Lahore Centre, approached Wasti in the mid-1990s to be cast in a play called Sarah Aur Ammara alongside Resham, a film actress. The teleplay focused on a story about two sisters dealing with the stress of arranged marriages. She has since appeared in over 50 serials and roughly the same number of plays.
Wasti recalls that her first experience in acting was for the sake of art, but her parents later advised her to pursue the career professionally. Wasti began receiving roles in other PTV plays in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad after her first stint. People were sceptical when she first started acting, but after she proved herself, they began to accept her.
Among her most memorable plays are Bano Qudsia and Kallo. She also played a victim in Baadlon Par Basera, in which she is forced into marriage with a man in the United States over the phone, and when she meets him for the first time, she realises he is older than the picture she saw of him.
Wasti is usually seen in unglamorous roles dealing with sensitive issues concerning women in Pakistan. She has portrayed prominent women such as Salma Murad and Bilquis Edhi. Wasti is known for speaking out on issues such as women's rights, harassment, gender equality, and prejudice.
Wasti has recently stated that newer Pakistani plays should depict issues in today's Pakistan. She cites drugs and AIDS as two of the most sensitive issues. She also attributes the decline in the quality of drama serials to a scarcity of actors, actresses, writers, directors, and producers.
In response to these ideas, Wasti established a production company in 2002, where she has successfully produced several serials and a dozen plays.
