Hwang In-youp (Hangja: ; born January 19, 1991) is a South Korean actor, model, and singer. He began his career as a model before making his screen debut as the main character in the web series Why (2018). His breakthrough role in the hit drama True Beauty catapulted him to international prominence (2020–21). He is also well-known for his performances in the Netflix original series The Sound of Magic (2022) and the television drama Why Her? (2022).
Childhood and education
Hwang In-youp was born on January 19, 1991 in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. He is the oldest son; his younger brother, three years his junior, is a producer and singer-songwriter known as Inof. During his high school and college years, Hwang went by the name Ryan Leon in Davao City, Philippines. He attended the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School for high school and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fashion design from the Philippine Women's College of Davao.
Modeling and acting debuts in 2017-2019
Hwang debuted in the entertainment industry as a runway model in 2017. According to reports, he was once a client of YG KPlus, a model management company owned by YG Entertainment.
He made his acting debut in the Naver TV web series Why in 2018. He later signed a contract with KeyEast, a subsidiary of SM Entertainment in South Korea.
In 2019, he starred as Seo Kyo-won in the web series Freshman and made his television debut as a supporting character in the KBS2 historical drama The Tale of Nokdu.
2020–present: Rising popularity and international recognition
Hwang rose to prominence in 2020 for his performance in the JTBC fantasy series 18 Again, a remake of the 2009 American film 17 Again. He portrayed Goo Ja-sung, a school bully and the polar opposite of Stan, played by Hunter Parrish in the original film.
Hwang rose to international prominence for his role in the tvN romantic-comedy series True Beauty, which is based on the ongoing Webtoon of the same name. Han Seo-jun, a secondary lead character, was played by him. With the song "It Starts Today," he contributed to the series' soundtrack.
Hwang also co-starred in the independent short film Swimming Bird with Lee Ji-ah, which won the first GwangMyeong Film Festival.
Hwang was cast in the fantasy musical series The Sound of Magic in 2021, which premiered globally on Netflix in May 2022. He also contributed to the series' soundtrack with the song "I Mean It" (). Hwang signed a contract with Japan's Stream Media Corporation on April 23, 2021, according to Keyeast. Hwang later confirmed that he will star in the SBS mystery legal drama Why Her, which will premiere in June 2022, marking his first lead role on a terrestrial TV station. Hwang held his first global ontact fan meeting titled "2021 HWANG IN YOUP Ontact Fan Meeting [Magazine H: Hi-High Vol.1]" on July 3, 2021, via Olleh TV for local streaming and MyMusicTaste for global audiences.
Hwang's agency announced in 2022 that he will embark on the "HWANG IN YOUP 1st Fan Meeting Tour," which will begin in South Korea. He held fan events in five countries: Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
Hwang had completed his mandatory military service before auditioning for a modeling career.
He has studied martial arts such as Taekwondo (where he holds a 3rd dan black belt), Hapkido, and Kendo (or Kumdo as it is known in South Korea).
