Tegan Lauren-Hannah Murray is an English actress who was born on July 1, 1989. She starred as Cassie in Skins (2007-2008, 2013) and Gilly in HBO's Game of Thrones (2012-2019), for which she and her co-stars were nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Her film roles include Stuart Murdoch's God Help The Girl, a 2014 musical romance film that earned her a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and Jeppe Rnde's Bridgend, a 2015 drama film that earned her the Tribeca Film Festival's Best Actress Award.

Between film roles, she appeared on stage in Polly Stenham's That Face in the West End (2008) and Martine in the Off West End (2014).

Early years

Murray was born in Bristol on July 1, 1989. Her father is a professor at Bristol University, and her mother is a research technician. She studied English at Queens' College, Cambridge. She was a member of the Bristol Old Vic Young Company and attended North Bristol Post 16 Centre.

Murray's career began when he was 17 years old and heard about an audition for young actors in Bristol. The auditions were for the teen drama Skins on E4. She impressed the show's producers and was cast as Cassie Ainsworth, a sweet and creative but self-destructive adolescent with an eating disorder. Murray and April Pearson were the show's first two cast members. Murray then appeared in the first two seasons, from 2007 to 2008. She left the show at the end of its second season to make way for a new generation of characters. Murray has stated that "it would be really silly to be in a teenage drama if you're no longer a teenager" in response to the decision to replace the cast.
Murray made her stage debut as Mia in the critically acclaimed That Face, a West End production at the Duke of York's Theatre, following Skins in May 2008. Her performance in the play was widely praised, and it was regarded as a watershed moment in her career. She had a small role in the black comedy In Bruges the same year, but her scene was cut.

Murray played Dorothy Savage in the ITV adaptation of Agatha Christie's novel Why Didn't They Ask Evans? in 2009. She also starred in the thriller Womb (2010). Murray went on to star in an adaptation of Enda Walsh's Chatroom later that year. The film had its world premiere at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. In early January, she appeared in a minor role in the British television thriller Above Suspicion: the Red Dahlia, an adaptation of Linda La Plante's novel.

Murray was cast as Gilly in the second and third seasons of Game of Thrones by HBO on August 8, 2011. For the fourth season, she was promoted to series regular. Her character is a young woman who has a child by her own father and is protected by Samwell Tarly. She made her film debut in the action thriller The Numbers Station in 2012.
Murray reprised her role as a more serious, solemn, and independent adult Cassie Ainsworth in a two-episode feature in the seventh and final series of Skins in 2013. She also appeared in Belle & Sebastian's "Your Cover's Blown" music video.

Murray starred in God Help the Girl, a 2014 film about three musicians in Glasgow. Murray received the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for the Delightful Ensemble Performance when the film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2014. Later that year, she reprised her role as Gilly in Season 4 of Game of Thrones. She also played the title role in the critically acclaimed revival of Jean-Jacques Bernard's play Martine. Her performance was hailed by the public and critics as one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking of the year, and she was nominated for Best Female Performance at the Off West End Awards.

Murray starred in Lily & Kat (2015), an independent American film and Micael Preysler's first feature, about inseparable best friends struggling to make the most of their last few days together, savouring the city nightlife with an enigmatic artist one of them takes a liking to.

In 2015, she starred as Sara in the Danish film Bridgend, which was inspired by the Bridgend suicides in South Wales. The film had its world premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival and received favourable reviews. The film had its North American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it won three awards, including Best Actress for Murray.
Murray portrayed Sylvia Ageloff, a young Jewish American intellectual from Brooklyn and Trotsky confidante, in the 2016 film The Chosen.

Murray appeared in Kathryn Bigelow's drama Detroit, which was based on the Algiers Motel incident during Detroit's 1967 12th Street Riot, in 2017. The film received positive reviews from critics.

In 2018, she starred as Leslie "Lulu" Van Houten, an American convicted murderer and former member of the Manson Family, in Mary Harron's Charlie Says. The film had its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, and it was inspired by the books The Family by Ed Sanders and The Long Prison Journey of Leslie Van Houten by Karlene Faith.
