Choi Soo-young (born February 10, 1990) is a South Korean singer, actress, and songwriter better known as Sooyoung. During 2002, she was a member of the short-lived Korean-Japanese singing duo Route 0 in Japan. Sooyoung returned to South Korea in 2004 and eventually became a member of the girl group Girls' Generation in 2007, which went on to become one of South Korea's best-selling artists and one of the world's most popular girl groups. Sooyoung has appeared in a number of television dramas, including The Third Hospital (2012), Dating Agency: Cyrano (2013), My Spring Days (2014), Squad 38 (2016), Man in the Kitchen (2017-2018), Tell Me What You Saw (2020), and, most recently, Run On (2021), So I Married the Anti-fan (2021), and If You Wish Upon Me (2021). Sooyoung left SM Entertainment in October 2017, but she is still a member of Girls' Generation. In 2018, she signed with Echo Global Group and released her first solo single, "Winter Breath," before joining Saram Entertainment in 2019.
Life and work
1990–2007: Beginnings in life and in a career
Sooyoung was born on February 10, 1990, in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, South Korea. She is the younger sister of musical theatre actress Choi Soo-jin. Sooyoung was discovered when she was in fifth grade through an SM Entertainment Open Audition. Later, she won first place in the 2002 Korea-Japan Ultra Idol Duo Audition and made her Japanese debut as a member of Route 0. Before disbanding in 2003, the duo released three singles.
Sooyoung returned to SM Entertainment and made her South Korean debut in August 2007 as a member of the girl group Girls' Generation. With the release of their hit single "Gee" in 2009, the group gained significant popularity. Sooyoung stated in an interview that she was interested in acting before making her debut as a singer and had failed more than 70 auditions prior to her debut.
Acting roles and songwriting from 2008 to 2016.
Aside from Girls' Generation, Sooyoung has been involved in a number of music and acting projects. Her early roles and guest appearances included KBS2's sitcom Unstoppable Marriage (2007), romantic comedy film Hello, Schoolgirl (2008), SBS's drama Oh! My Lady (2010), SBS's Paradise Ranch (2011), and SBS's A Gentleman's Dignity (2012). (2012). During this time, she recorded two songs: "KKok," a trot song with Girls' Generation member Yuri for the SBS drama Working Mom, and "Feeling Only You," a collaboration with Girls' Generation member Tiffany and South Korean duo The Blue.
Sooyoung has dabbled in lyric writing as well as contributing vocals to Girls' Generation songs throughout her career. She wrote the lyrics to three songs: "How Great is Your Love" (2011), "What Do I Do" (2016), and "Sailing (0805)" (2016), as well as co-writing "Baby Maybe" (2013). She landed her first major acting role in tvN's medical drama The Third Hospital in September 2012. Both co-stars Oh Ji Ho and Kim Seung-woo praised her, and viewers were drawn to her emotional scene because of her natural display of emotion. Sooyoung was cast in tvN's romantic comedy drama Dating Agency: Cyrano in May 2013. It was a sequel to the 2010 film Cyrano Agency. She portrayed a dating expert who works at a dating agency to help people find love. Park Ju-yeon from the Hankook Ilbo praised Sooyoung for her lively character portrayal and said that there was not any "overdone emotions commonly appear in acting newcomers".
Sooyoung landed the lead role in MBC's melodrama My Spring Days in September 2014. Her character, played by Kam Woo-sung, is a terminally ill patient who receives a heart transplant and meets her donor's husband. Sooyoung won the "Best Actress in a Miniseries" award at the 2014 MBC Drama Awards and the "Excellence Award for Actress" at the 2015 Korea Drama Awards for her breakthrough performance. She contributed a song called "Wind Flower" to the film's soundtrack. Sooyoung starred as the female lead in KBS2's special drama Perfect Sense in 2015, which was produced by Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance to help raise public awareness of the disabled. She portrayed Ah-yeon, a visually impaired teacher. In June 2016, Sooyoung co-starred in the OCN crime drama Squad 38 as the female lead alongside Ma Dong-seok and Seo In-guk.
2017–present: Change of label and continued acting
Sooyoung appeared as a television producer in the JTBC web drama Someone You Might Know in early August 2017. Later that month, she was cast as the female lead in the MBC drama series Man in the Kitchen. Sooyoung joined Echo Global Group in November 2017 after her contract with SM Entertainment expired. Her future activities with Girls' Generation are still up in the air due to the label change.
Sooyoung appeared in the Korean-Japanese film Memories of a Dead End and the action comedy film Girl Cops in 2018.
Sooyoung released her solo single "Winter Breath" in December 2018, her first song since leaving SM Entertainment, with the music video being made available online the same day. To commemorate the release of the single, Sooyoung established official Twitter and YouTube accounts.
Sooyoung signed with new agency Saram Entertainment in May 2019. Sooyoung will appear in the OCN drama Tell Me What You Saw in February 2020.
Sooyoung appeared in the JTBC romance drama Run On in 2020. In 2021, she co-starred with Choi Tae-joon in the Naver TV romantic comedy series So I Married the Anti-fan, based on the same-named manhwa, and she appeared in the Netflix original series Move to Heaven.
In 2022, she portrayed a hospice nurse in the KBS2 drama If You Wish Upon Me. Sooyoung contributed to Girls' Generation's 15th anniversary album Forever 1 (2022), co-writing the song "Seventeen" for the album.
Private life
In 2009, Sooyoung graduated from JeongShin Women's High School. She went on to major in film studies and graduated from Chung-Ang University in February 2016, where she was honoured with a lifetime achievement award during the graduation ceremony. Kwon Yuri, another member of Girls' Generation, went to the same university as her.
Since 2013, Sooyoung has been dating Jung Kyung-ho.
Sooyoung has participated in a variety of philanthropic activities. Along with her bandmates Tiffany, Taeyeon, and Seohyun, she was named ambassador to Korea's Retinitis Pigmentosa Society in 2012. She launched a fundraising campaign for patients of the disease with cable channel QTV at the end of that year. She has continued to serve as an ambassador since then, holding sponsorship events and supporting patient treatment research.
Sooyoung launched the Beaming Effect clothing line in 2016 to raise awareness for Retinitis Pigmentosa. Throughout the years, she has held several charity bazaars and donated the proceeds to disease research. Notably, in 2017, she held a funding with Kakao, a charity bazaar, and a charity concert with various artists.
Sooyoung is also an ambassador for the Korean Day of Overcoming Rare Diseases, the Social Welfare Council, and the National Disability Awareness Improvement Campaign. After playing the role of someone who received a heart transplant through organ donation in her drama My Spring Days, she sponsored the operation cost of a person with heart disease in 2014.
