The Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner is typically one of the more seasoned competitors, just like with leading men. Only four of the 86 Best Supporting Actor winners to date, including the 2021 victor Daniel Kaluuya ("Judas and the Messiah"), were under thirty. Troy Kostur, the "CODA" winner in 2022, was 53 at the time of his victory. He joined 14 other winners who, at the time they received the trophy, were in their 50s. When they took home the Best Supporting Actor trophy at the Academy Awards, eleven more men were in their 60s. Eight people had to wait until they were in their 70s to win, while two people—George Burns for "The Sunshine Boys" and Christopher Plummer for "Beginners"—had already reached their 80s.
Mahershala Ali accepted the award for "Green Book" at the 2019 Academy Awards. Just two years prior, he had won this same category for "Moonlight." He was the 31st (and 29th) recipient of this honour who was above 40. The 30th winner was Sam Rockwell, who took home the award for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" in 2018. He did so eight months before turning 50.
