Actress, singer, and published author Andrea Navedo hails from the United States. She started off as a daytime soap opera actress on One Life to Live (1995–1997 and 1999–2000) and Guiding Light (1999–2000), and later on she had a number of minor roles on primetime television. Navedo played the role of Xiomara "Xo" Villanueva in the comedy-drama series Jane the Virgin on The CW from 2014 to 2019.
Navedo was born and raised in New York City and is a second-generation Puerto Rican. She claimed that because her mother was also a young single mother, she can relate to her Jane the Virgin role. Navedo earned a B.A. in Communicative and Creative Arts with an emphasis in theatre from the State University of New York at Old Westbury in 1998 after graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1988. Along with other well-known alumni like Stan Lee, Navedo was also highlighted in a DeWitt Clinton prominent alumni piece.
Career
Daytime soap operas were where Navedo started her professional acting career. She portrayed Linda Soto in the ABC soap drama One Life to Live from 1995 to 1997. She began appearing as Theresa Sandoval in the CBS soap series Guiding Light in 1999. She debuted in a small role in the 1996 film Girl 6 and later appeared as a guest star on episodes of The District and New York Undercover. Navedo co-starred in the action comedy movie Double Take in 2001, and the drama movie Washington Heights the following year.
As Detective Ana Cordova, Navedo appeared frequently in the NBC legal drama Law & Order from 2001 to 2004. also made cameo appearances on Damages, Blue Bloods, and Criminal Intent for Law & Order. Additionally, Navedo has acted in a number of films, including El Cantante and Remember Me. Navedo also had regular parts on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Golden Boy, and How to Make It in America from 2011 to 2013. She starred in the 2015 comedy Superfast!, which was a parody of the Fast and the Furious movie franchise.
In the critically acclaimed comedy-drama series Jane the Virgin on The CW, Navedo was cast as the series regular role of Xiomara "Xo" Villanueva, the titular character's mother (played by Gina Rodriguez). For her work, she was given the 2015 Imagen Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series. 2019 saw the end of the five-season television series. She had an appearance in the 2017 fantasy crime movie Bright with Will Smith. She was chosen to play Carmen Delgado Votaw, a civil rights activist, in the Mrs. America miniseries on Hulu in 2020.
Personal life
Relationship Bob Sewell, the CEO and founder of Bellwether Investment Management, and Navedo are partners in their personal lives. A son named Nico and a girl named Ava are her two children.
