Son Ye-jin first appeared as Jung Mi-jo in Park Ki-2000 hyung's film Secret Tears, and then went on to star in television dramas such as Delicious Proposal, Sun-hee and Jin-hee, and Great Ambition. Her first prominent film role was in Im Kwon-Chi-hwa-seon, taek's which screened at Cannes and won Best Director in 2002.

Her breakthrough success came in the subsequent films Lovers' Concerto and The Classic. Both were solid mid-level hits in Korea, and The Classic, directed by Kwak Jae-yong of My Sassy Girl, received widespread exposure in regions such as Hong Kong and mainland China, catapulting Son to East Asian stardom. In 2003, Son cemented her status as a Hallyu (Korean Wave) star by starring in the TV drama Summer Scent, the third installment of Yoon Seok-season-themed ho's tetralogy Endless Love drama series.

Her subsequent films were also huge hits in East Asia, particularly in Japan: A Moment to Remember, based on a popular Japanese series, broke box office records in Japan and sold over two million tickets in Korea, and April Snow, in which she co-starred with superstar Bae Yong-joon, was a hit in Japan and China. Son, who portrayed a pure and innocent image in her films The Classic and A Moment to Remember, was dubbed "Korea's First Love" in the country.

When she was guaranteed a talent fee of KRW 50 million (plus incentive) per episode for her lead role in SBS drama Alone in Love in 2006, she became the highest-paid Korean actress in Korean television series.

2006-2015: Film roles in a variety of genres.

Son then abandoned her nice girl image in her subsequent projects. In The Art of Seduction, she played a con artist, an ambitious reporter in Spotlight, a femme fatale in Open City, and a divorcee in the critically acclaimed series Alone in Love. Her performance as a polyandrous woman in My Wife Got Married earned her Best Actress honours from the prestigious Blue Dragon Film Awards and other local award-giving bodies in 2008.

Son wanted to do a more fun project after filming the dark mystery White Night, so she chose the romantic comedy series Personal Taste, followed by the horror-romantic comedy film Spellbound, which became one of the top-grossing films in 2011 and by far the most successful Korean romantic comedy movie in recent years.

Son made her feature film debut in 2012 with The Tower, a remake of the 1974 Hollywood disaster film The Towering Inferno. In 2013, she appeared in the revenge drama Shark (also known as Don't Look Back: The Legend of Orpheus), and in 2014, she starred in Blood and Ties, a thriller about a daughter who suspects her father is involved in a kidnap-murder case.

Son reunited with Shark co-star Kim Nam-gil in the 2014 period adventure film The Pirates, which received mixed reviews but was a commercial success with over 8.6 million admissions at the end of its theatrical run, earning Son the Grand Bell Awards for Best Actress. Along with The Tower and The Last Princess, The Pirates is one of the highest-grossing Korean films of all time. Son then starred in the Chinese-Korean co-production Bad Guys Always Die, in which he co-starred with Taiwanese actor Chen Bolin.

2016–present: Critical acclaim and international recognition

Son reunited with My Wife Got Married co-star Kim Joo-hyuk in the 2016 political thriller The Truth Beneath, for which she received critical acclaim. Her performance earned her Best Actress honours at the 25th Buil Film Awards and the 17th Busan Film Critics Awards. She then portrayed Princess Deokhye in Hur Jin-April ho's Snow biopic The Last Princess. The film received favourable reviews from critics and went on to become a box office success, grossing US$40.35 million worldwide. Sung So-young of the Korea JoongAng Daily praised the film for being "interesting enough to hold the audience's attention from beginning to end," despite her belief that the screenwriter's (Hur) imagination went too far in several scenes. She stated that major events in Princess Deokhye's life were well portrayed, and that the film's greatest strength was that it made audiences want to learn more about her. The Korea Herald's Rumy Doo described Son Ye-jin as a "sensitive and technically refined performer." Critics praised Son's portrayal of "the unfathomable depths on the emotional ups and downs of Deokhye" as "outstanding," and she received numerous awards for her work.

Son co-starred with So Ji-sub in the 2018 romance film Be with You, based on the Japanese novel of the same name. Son returned to television after five years with JTBC's romance drama Something in the Rain that same year. The series was commercially successful, and Son's performance received high praise. Son also appeared in the crime thriller The Negotiation, co-starring with Hyun Bin, as a professional negotiator attempting to save hostages.

Son appeared alongside Hyun Bin in the global hit romance drama Crash Landing on You in 2019 as a rich heiress who falls in love with a North Korean commission officer. The drama was a huge success, ranking third in cable television history for Korean dramas.

Son will make her Hollywood debut in 2022, starring alongside Sam Worthington in Andrew Niccol's upcoming film The Cross. Filming for the film is set to begin in April 2021 in Hwaseong City, South Korea.
