Sinop is where her mother is from. Her maternal family is of Turkish descent, and they all immigrated to mainland Turkey after the Greek conquest of Selânik (today Thessaloniki, Greece) when the Ottoman Empire collapsed. Her father is originally from Kastamonu. She is the eldest of seven siblings (5 boys and 2 girls). Turan began playing the violin and acting at a young age. She later studied film at Istanbul University's Faculty of Communication's Department of Radio, TV, and Cinema.
