Kim Min-seok (Korean: ; born March 26, 1990) is a South Korean singer and actor better known by his stage name Xiumin (Korean: ; pronounced [hi.u.min]). He is best known as a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band Exo, as well as its sub-groups Exo-M and Exo-CBX. On September 26, 2022, he made his solo debut with the release of his EP, Brand New.
Name
His stage name is a combination of the Chinese reading of the hanja characters (xiù), which means great or show, and (mn), which is part of his given name.
Life and work
1990-2013: Beginnings of life and career

Xiumin was born in Seoul on March 26, 1990, and grew up in Guri, Gyeonggi Province. He was a student at Catholic Kwandong University, where he attended a seminar and delivered a presentation to Applied Music students. Xiumin studied martial arts and holds a black belt in both Kendo and Taekwondo. He also did Wushu and Fencing training. Xiumin is also a football fan who serves as an honorary ambassador for the Korea Football Association.
Prior to his participation in SM's Everysing Contest, Xiumin auditioned for JYP Entertainment in 2008 but was turned down. Xiumin finished second in the SM Everysing Contest in 2008. In the same year, he became a trainee through SM Entertainment's Casting System.
In January 2012, Xiumin was announced as the seventh member of the South Korean-Chinese boy band Exo. On April 8, 2012, the group made its debut. In 2013, Xiumin appeared in a music video for the song "Gone" by South Korean singer Jin, who is now a member of Lovelyz, alongside actress Kim Yoo-jung.

Xiumin made his musical theatre debut in January 2015, playing Aquila in the SM Entertainment musical School OZ alongside labelmates Changmin, Key, Luna, Suho, and Seulgi. In the web drama Falling for Challenge, Xiumin co-starred with actress Kim So-eun in October 2015. He also released "You Are the One," his first solo song since his debut, as a soundtrack for the web drama. Falling for Challenge was South Korea's most watched web drama in 2015, with 20 million views in just 17 days.
In February 2016, Xiumin appeared in the music video for AOA member Jimin's solo single "Call You Bae." He made his big screen debut alongside Yoo Seung-ho in the South Korean film Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River in July 2016. In August 2016, he worked on an original soundtrack titled "For You" for the television series Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo with fellow Exo members Chen and Baekhyun. Xiumin joined Exo's first official sub unit Exo-CBX in October 2016, along with Chen and Baekhyun. The extended play Hey Mama! marked the group's debut. on the 31st of October.
Xiumin collaborated with NCT member Mark on a single titled "Young & Free" for S.M. in July 2017. Station is Entertainment's digital music project. He joined the MBC reality show It's Dangerous Beyond The Blankets as a regular cast member in August.
On May 7, 2019, Xiumin enlisted for his mandatory military service, serving on active duty. His final concerts before enlistment were Exo-Magical CBX's Circus - Special Edition in Japan and his solo fan meeting concert, Xiuweet Time, on May 4 at Jamsil Arena. On May 9, following his enlistment, he released his debut solo single, "You," which is part of SM Station. In August 2019, it was announced that Xiumin would star in the army musical "Return: The Promise of That Day" alongside Shinee members Onew and Yoon Ji-sung, which ran from October 22 to December 1 at Seoul's Olympic Park's Woori Art Hall. Due to the military's policy on COVID-19, Xiumin took his final military leave in November 2020 and did not return to the army; he was discharged on December 6.
Solo debut in 2022
On September 26, Xiumin released his debut EP, Brand New, along with the title track. According to The Korea Herald, Brand New is a retro K-pop record that provides "nostalgic '90s sonic euphoria to listeners."
