Tyler Sage Alvarez (born October 25, 1997) is an American actor best known for playing Peter Maldonado in Netflix's mockumentary series American Vandal.
Alvarez grew up in New York City, the son of a first-generation Cuban American father and a fourth-generation Puerto Rican American mother. His father works for the Drug Enforcement Administration, and his mother is a private hospital nurse administrator. Niko, his older brother, died in October 2018. When Alvarez was a child, his parents divorced and both remarried. He has two younger half-siblings from his father, Alex and Brianna, and a younger half-sister, Sofia, from his mother.
Alvarez attended New York City's Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School and Jericho High School in Jericho, New York. He speaks Spanish very well.
Alvarez's first professional acting job was in a commercial for Totino's pizza rolls. In 2014, he began starring in Nickelodeon's teen sitcom Every Witch Way as Diego Rueda, a human with magical powers. The following year, Alvarez began starring in Netflix's comedy-drama series Orange Is the New Black as Benny Mendoza, the eldest son of Litchfield inmate Gloria Mendoza.
In 2017, he debuted as Peter Maldonado in Netflix's true crime mockumentary series American Vandal. He returned for season two, which aired in 2018. Netflix has since cancelled the series.
Tyler Alvarez also played Miguel in the YouTube satirical miniseries Me Llamo Alma!.
Alvarez made his off-Broadway debut in 2020 with the Roundabout Theatre Company's production of 72 Miles to Go. The production was forced to halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In season 2, Alvarez appeared as a recurring character on the Netflix show Never Have I Ever.
