Tara Sutaria (born November 19, 1995) is an Indian film actress who works primarily in Hindi. She began her career as a singer on Disney India's Big Bada Boom before moving on to acting on the channel's sitcoms The Suite Life of Karan & Kabir (2012) and Oye Jassie (2013). (2013). Sutaria made her film debut with Student of the Year 2 in 2019, for which she received the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut.
Since then, she has played the lead in the romantic dramas Marjaavaan (2019), Tadap (2021), Heropanti 2 (2022), and Ek Villain Returns (2022).
Childhood and education
Tara Sutaria was born in Mumbai on November 19, 1995, into a Parsi Zoroastrian family. Her twin sister's name is Pia. Both received classical ballet, modern dance, and Latin American dance training at the School of Classical Ballet and Western Dance, Royal Academy of Dance, and Imperial Society for Teachers of Dancing, respectively. She has been a professional singer since the age of seven, performing in operas and competitions. She graduated from St. Andrew's College of Arts, Science, and Commerce with a bachelor's degree in Mass Media.
Career
A career in television (2010–2013)
Sutaria began her association with Disney Channel India as a video jockey and continued to work with them, producing two successful sitcoms. She has also recorded music for films, advertisements, and her own original work in India and abroad. Her song "Slippin' Through My Fingers" appears on Bharat Dhabholkar's Blame It On Yashraj, produced by Ashwin Gidwani. She has also played Sandy in Raell Padamsee's production of the musical Grease.
She has recorded and performed solo concerts in London, Tokyo, Lavasa, and Mumbai, among other places. She has worked with Louiz Banks, Mikey McCleary, and has been a soloist for the Stop-Gaps Choral Ensemble for over a decade. In the singer category of the 2008 "Pogo Amazing Kids Awards," she was one of the top seven finalists. She was nominated for her performances as Vinnie in The Suite Life of Karan & Kabir and Jassie in Oye Jassie.
A career in film (2019–present)
Sutaria was one of two actresses chosen for the role of Princess Jasmine in the 2019 American fantasy film Aladdin, but she lost out to Naomi Scott. Later that year, she made her film debut alongside Tiger Shroff and Ananya Panday in Punit Malhotra's coming-of-age teen film Student of the Year 2. It was produced by Karan Johar as a standalone sequel to Student of the Year (2012) and tells the story of a college student (played by Shroff) who competes for an annual school championship. "Tara Sutaria is perfectly put together and yet looks assembly-line produced," Shubhra Gupta wrote in her review for The Indian Express. She was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. It didn't do well commercially.
Later that year, Sutaria co-starred in Milap Zaveri's action film Marjaavaan as Zoya, a mute music teacher, alongside Sidharth Malhotra, Riteish Deshmukh, and Rakul Preet Singh. The film was moderately successful, grossing 65.35 crores worldwide. In a scathing review for The Hindu, Namrata Joshi found the film to be "loud, overcooked and overdone" and wrote that Sutaria was reduced to "smiling and weeping alternately".
Sutaria and debutante Ahan Shetty starred in Milan Luthria's romantic thriller Tadap, a remake of Telugu film RX 100, in 2021. (2018). Critics had mixed feelings about it. "Tadap unabashedly plays to the gallery with action, music, and well-shot visuals," wrote Rachana Dubey of the Times of India, praising the performances of Shetty, Sutaria, and Shukla.
She reunited with Shroff again in Ahmed Khan's actioner Heropanti 2 in 2022, which received negative reviews from critics and was a commercial failure. In July 2022, she co-starred with Arjun Kapoor as Aarvi Malhotra in Mohit Suri's psychological suspense action thriller film Ek Villain Returns, alongside John Abraham and Disha Patani. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews. "Tara Sutaria is exactly how she was in her previous film," Rediff.com's Sukanya Verma said.
Sutaria's next film will be the thriller Apurva.

Sutaria is an advocate for a variety of causes, including animal welfare and feminism. She has walked the runway at Lakme Fashion Week and has appeared on the covers of several magazines.
Sutaria is a celebrity brand and product endorser for a variety of companies and products, including Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Hazoorilal Jewellers, and Nature 4 Nature. She appeared in an advertisement for Nature 4 Nature alongside Ishaan Khattar. Sutaria was ranked 13th in the Times' 50 Most Desirable Women list in 2019 and 12th in 2020.
