Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi reconstituted the party’s Parliamentary hierarchy in both houses, “to facilitate and ensure the effective functioning”, ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Sonia Gandhi has reconstituted the parliamentary groups in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, bringing in senior faces such as former Union ministers P Chidambaram, Manish Tewari, Ambika Soni and former chief minister Digvijaya Singh.
In a directive, the Congress interim chief informed that party leader ADHIR RANJAN CHOWDHURY will continue as the leader of the party in Lower House and Gaurav Gogoi will be the deputy. Congress also informed that K Suresh will be chief whip and Ravneet Singh Bittu and Manickam Tagore will be the whips of the party in the lower house. Congress leaders Manish Tewari and Dr. Shashi Tharoor will also be part of the group.
For Upper House, Malikarjun Kharge will be the leader on the floor with Anand Sharma as his deputy. Party appointed Jairam Ramesh as the Chief Whip in Upper House, along with Ambika Soni, P Chidambaram, Digvijaya Singh and K C Venugopal as the member of the group.
Gandhi, in a letter said, “As the chairperson of the CPP (Congress Parliamentary Party), I have decided to reconstitute the following groups to facilitate and ensure the effective functioning of our party in both Houses of Parliament. These groups will meet daily during the session and can meet during the intersession periods as well where Parliament issues are concerned.”
The latest reshuffle in the parliamentary teams comes just a day before the monsoon session of Parliament, which starts on Monday. After two curtailed session, this one holds promise to be a full session. It is also likely to be stormy as the Opposition wants to corner the government on economy, vaccination strategy, job loss, and farm issues.
