Song Kang is a South Korean actor who was born on April 23, 1994. Love Alarm (2019-21), Sweet Home (2020), Navillera (2021), Nonetheless (2021), and Forecasting Love and Weather are among his notable lead roles in television series (2022). He is popularly known as the "Son of Netflix" because the majority of his series are available on the streaming service.
Career 2017-18: First Steps
Kang made his acting debut in the 2017 romantic comedy television series The Liar and His Lover as a supporting character. He was cast in the family drama Man in the Kitchen the same year. He also appeared in two music videos: The Ade's "Sweet Summer Night" and Suran's "Love Story." Kang's agency Namoo Actors hosted a fan meeting titled "Introduction to Rookies" on July 8, 2017, alongside Oh Seung-hoon and Lee Yoo-jin.
Kang co-hosted the SBS music show Inkigayo with Seventeen's Mingyu and DIA's Jung Chae-yeon from February to October 2018. Song made his feature film debut in July 2018 with the fantasy film Beautiful Vampire.
2019–present: Increased popularity and lead roles
Kang appeared as Jung Kyung-assistant ho's in the tvN fantasy melodrama When the Devil Calls Your Name in 2019. Following that, he appeared in the Netflix original romantic series Love Alarm, which was based on the popular webtoon of the same name. Kang was chosen from 900 applicants for his first main role as a handsome high-school student who falls in love with a girl (Kim So-hyun) who was his best friend's secret crush. Love Alarm has been renewed for a second season after being named one of Netflix's top releases of the year. His final appearance that year was in Vibe's "Call Me Back" music video.
Kang rose to prominence in 2020 after starring in the apocalyptic horror Netflix original Sweet Home, which was based on the eponymous webtoon. On the recommendation of Love Alarm's director to Sweet Home's director, Lee Eung-bok, he auditioned for the role. Cha Hyun-su, a suicidal high school boy, tries to survive a "monsterization" apocalypse with a group of fellow apartment residents. The series received mixed reviews from critics, but it drew a large international audience. Variety revealed one month after the series' release that it had been viewed by 22 million Netflix member households. Kang was nominated for Best New Actor - Television at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards.
In 2021, he played Hwang Sun-oh again in the second season of Love Alarm, which debuted on Netflix on March 12. He then appeared in the tvN series Navillera, which was based on the eponymous webtoon. He portrayed a ballet student who struggles because of unresolved issues with his father and tries to support himself by working part-time. Kang studied ballet for six months in order to play his character. Later that year, Kang appeared alongside Han So-hee in another webtoon adaptation, Nevertheless, JTBC's romance drama.
Kang had a successful year in 2021 in terms of viewership, as Sweet Home, Love Alarm, and Nevertheless ranked as the 5th, 6th, and 8th most watched K-dramas on Netflix worldwide, respectively.
Kang appeared alongside Park Min-young in another JTBC drama, Forecasting Love and Weather, in 2022. Kang held a fan meeting on March 4, 2022, to communicate with fans all over the world in real time via 'The Swoon,' a South Korean YouTube channel. Kang will hold a fan meeting on June 12, 2022, at the YES24 Live Hall, according to reports in May. Song confirmed in November that the "2023 Song Kang Asia Fan Meeting Tour" will take place in six countries, beginning in Seoul and ending in Tokyo, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Bangkok in 2023.
