Shahid Kapoor (born 25 February 1981) is an Indian actor who works primarily in Hindi films. Known for his romantic roles, he has since taken on roles in action films and thrillers, and has won several awards, including three Filmfare Awards.
Kapoor, the son of actors Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem, studied dance at Shiamak Davar's academy. He appeared in a few films as a background dancer in the 1990s, and he later appeared in music videos and television commercials. In 2003, he made his film debut in the romantic comedy Ishq Vishk, a sleeper hit for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Following that, he appeared in several commercial flops before starring in Sooraj Barjatya's top-grossing family drama Vivah (2006).
Kapoor received acclaim for his roles in Imtiaz Ali's romantic comedy Jab We Met (2007) and as twin brothers in Vishal Bhardwaj's action film Kaminey (2009). After another string of failures, he starred in the action film R... Rajkumar (2013). (2013). Further acclaim came for her performances as Hamlet in Bhardwaj's tragedy Haider (2014) and as a drug-abusing singer in the crime drama Udta Punjab (2016). He won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the former, and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor for the latter. The period drama Padmaavat (2018) and the romantic drama Kabir Singh (2018) were Kapoor's highest-grossing films (2019). He later appeared in the Amazon Prime Video crime drama Farzi (2023).
In addition to acting, Kapoor supports charities, hosts award ceremonies, and has appeared as a talent judge on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded (2015). He is married to Mira Rajput and they have two children.
Early years
Shahid Kapoor was born on February 25, 1981 in New Delhi to actor Pankaj Kapur and actress-dancer Neelima Azeem. When he was three years old, his parents divorced; his father moved to Mumbai (and married actress Supriya Pathak), while Kapoor remained in Delhi with his mother and maternal grandparents. His grandparents were journalists for the Russian magazine Sputnik, and Kapoor had a special relationship with his grandfather: "He would walk me to school every single day. He would talk to me about dad, with whom he shared a great relationship, and read out his letters to me." His father, a struggling actor in Mumbai at the time, would visit Kapoor only once a year on his birthday. When Kapoor was 10, his mother, a dancer, relocated to Mumbai to pursue a career as an actress.
Azeem later married actor Rajesh Khattar in Mumbai. Kapoor lived with his mother and Khattar until they divorced in 2001. On his passport, Kapoor continues to use the surname Khattar. From his mother's marriage to Khattar, he has a maternal half-brother, Ishaan. He has two paternal half-siblings, Sanah and Ruhaan, from his father's marriage to Pathak. Kapoor attended Delhi's Gyan Bharati School and Mumbai's Rajhans Vidyalaya. He later spent three years at Mumbai's Mithibai College.
Kapoor developed an early interest in dance and, at the age of 15, enrolled in Shiamak Davar's dance institute. As a student, Kapoor appeared as a background dancer in the films Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Taal (1999), both of which were choreographed by Davar. Kapoor performed in the songs "Vogue" and "GoldenEye" during a stage show at the institute, to a positive response from the audience; he described the experience as the first time he "felt like a star." He later became an institute instructor. During this time, Kapoor accompanied a friend to an audition for a Pepsi commercial starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, but he ended up getting the part himself. He has appeared in television commercials for the brands Kit Kat and Close-Up, as well as music videos for several artists, including the band Aryans and singer Kumar Sanu. On the 1998 television series Mohandas B.A.L.L.B., Kapoor worked as an assistant director to his father.

Early work and success (2003–2006)
Producer Ramesh Taurani was interested in casting Kapoor after seeing him in the Aryans' music video "Aankhon Mein." When Taurani met him, he thought Kapoor, who was 20 at the time, was too young and underweight to be an actor and advised him to wait a few years. Meanwhile, Kapoor turned down a lead role in N. Style, Chandra's sex comedy, in the hopes of working with Taurani. Taurani discovered a suitable project for Kapoor in the teenage romance Ishq Vishk (2003), directed by Ken Ghosh for his company. Kapoor was eventually hired after extensive training for a bulkier physical build. He attended acting workshops with Naseeruddin Shah and Satyadev Dubey before beginning work on the film.
Ishq Vishk tells the story of Rajiv Mathur (Kapoor), a high-school student who has a romantic affair with two of his classmates who have very different personalities (played by Amrita Rao and Shenaz Treasurywala). The idea of playing an unlikable lead appealed to Kapoor because it was a departure from the traditional portrayal of teenage heroes in Indian films. The critic Ziya Us Salam wrote for The Hindu that he was not "hero material," adding that "boyhood seems to have overstayed on his face - but he is not necessarily bad in the acting department." The film, however, was a sleeper hit at the box office and earned Kapoor the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.
Following his debut, Kapoor reteamed with Ghosh in a film that he saw as vastly different from Ishq Vishk. In the thriller Fida (2004), he played a love-struck student who is duped into robbing a bank by a woman (Kareena Kapoor) and her lover (Fardeen Khan). Despite the film's flaws, Rama Sharma of The Tribune wrote that Kapoor "shines in his role. He looks fresh. As an impulsive emotional and innocent guy who is sucked into crime because of these very qualities, he manages to evoke your sympathies." Later that year, Kapoor appeared in the romantic comedy Dil Maange More, opposite three women: Soha Ali Khan, Tulip Joshi, and Ayesha Takia. Patcy N of Rediff.com praised his dancing abilities but expressed concern about his impersonation of Shah Rukh Khan's acting style. Both of his 2004 releases were commercial flops.
The run of bad reviews continued in 2005, when all three of Kapoor's films bombed at the box office. Deewane Huye Paagal and Vaah! were his first two films that year. Aisi Toh Life Ho! , both of which received widespread criticism. The former was based on the Hollywood film There's Something About Mary, in which Kapoor played one of Rimi Sen's love interests; critic Khalid Mohamed called him "the only likeable element in this travesty," but Outlook's Namrata Joshi called him "colourless" and criticized his pairing with Sen. His final role was that of a righteous teenager drawn towards a life of indulgence in John Matthew Matthan's drama Shikhar, co-starring Ajay Dev Sukanya Verma, a critic, thought Kapoor was miscast as a village boy in the film, but he was "never short of spontaneity and youthful exuberance."
Kapoor co-starred with Kareena Kapoor in two films in 2006: the thriller 36 China Town and the comedy Chup Chup Ke. Kapoor appeared as one of seven suspects in the murder of an heiress in 36 China Town, a murder mystery directed by Abbas-Mustan, and as a depressed man who pretends to be deaf and mute in Priyadarshan's Chup Chup Ke. His first commercial success since Ishq Vishk was with the former. Later that year, Kapoor achieved greater success when he co-starred with Amrita Rao in Sooraj Barjatya's romantic drama Vivah, which depicted an arranged marriage. The film earned over 530 million (US$6.6 million) worldwide, despite being made on a shoestring budget of 100 million (US$1.3 million). It was Kapoor's highest-grossing film to that point. However, the film received negative reviews, with Raja Sen calling it a "nightmare" and writing that Kapoor "isn't offensively bad, doesn't ham it up like crazy, or speak in a weird accent. Having said that, he isn't an actor at all, standing around working on his boyish grin, simply chewing up the scenery. No screen presence at all."
Kaminey, Jab We Met, and commercial fluctuations (2007–2013)
Kapoor's first 2007 release, the ensemble comedy Fool & Final, was a flop. However, his second release that year, the Imtiaz Ali-directed romantic comedy Jab We Met, was one of the year's highest-grossing films. The film tells the story of a troubled businessman (Kapoor) whose life changes after meeting a chatty girl (Kareena Kapoor) on a train ride. Ali believed that Kapoor's previous roles did not fully justify his acting potential, so he approached him to play a more complex character. The BBC praised him for being "endearing" in the film, and CNN-Rajeev IBN's Masand wrote that he left a "indelible impression with an understated and mature performance" in a film he thought belonged primarily to Kareena Kapoor. Kapoor received his first Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance.
Following his appearance in the romantic comedy Kismat Konnection (2008) opposite Vidya Balan, Kapoor played twin brothers, one with a lisp and the other with a stutter, in Vishal Bhardwaj's critically acclaimed action film Kaminey (2009). In preparation, Kapoor met with speech specialists and conducted research on the medical and psychological aspects of the two conditions. Kapoor used functional training and a strict diet to create a lean physique for one of the brothers, a look he considered "radically different" from his own. According to Variety critic Joe Leydon, Kapoor "impressively displays sufficiently variegated degrees of emotional intensity to sustain the illusion of two distinct characters. Just as important, he provides each sibling an appropriately elevated hunkiness quotient." Kapoor received a second Best Actor nomination at Filmfare. Kaminey amassed over 700 million (US$8.8 million) in worldwide earnings. Kapoor's final film in 2009 was Dil Bole Hadippa!, in which he played a cricketer. Rani Mukerji co-stars in this romantic comedy. It was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival, but it was a financial flop.
In 2012, Kapoor and co-star Priyanka Chopra promoted Teri Meri Kahaani.
In 2010, Kapoor reteamed with Ken Ghosh in Chance Pe Dance, a comedy-drama about a struggling actor, in which Aniruddha Guha of Daily News and Analysis described Kapoor's performance as "uneven." Following a supporting role in Paathshaala, a drama about India's education system starring Nana Patekar, he starred in Yash Raj Films' Badmaash Company, a comedy-drama about a group of overachievers who become con men. The New York Times' Rachel Saltz praised Kapoor's performance in the film, but Tushar Joshi of Mid-Day thought he was miscast. Kapoor's fourth and final release that year was Satish Kaushik's romantic comedy Milenge Milenge, which marked his fourth collaboration with Kareena Kapoor. The production has been delayed since 2005 due to plagiarism from the Hollywood film Serendipity. Kapoor requested a filming delay in December 2004 in Phuket in order to attend the premiere of Dil Maange More. The delay may have saved the lives of the crew, since the hotel booked for them was destroyed during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. With the exception of Badmaash Company, none of these films were commercially successful.
Kapoor next appeared in his father's directorial Mausam (2011), which co-starred Sonam Kapoor and took two years to complete. Kapoor did not take on additional work while filming the film because it was his "dream project." For his role as an unambitious village boy who becomes an air force pilot, Kapoor trained to fly the F-16 Fighting Falcon. "While he doesn't quite cut it as a convincing IAF pilot, Shahid Kapoor is terrific as the small-town brat," wrote Rajeev Masand. The film was a box office flop and Kapoor was later regretful for spending so much time on the project.
The following year, Kapoor appeared in Kunal Kohli's Teri Meri Kahaani (2012), alongside Priyanka Chopra. It tells the story of a pair of star-crossed lovers who are reincarnated in three different eras. According to Filmfare, "Shahid and Priyanka give it their best shot, but their charm doesn't compensate for the lack of a genuine kahani [story]." Kapoor's first 2013 release was the comedy Phata Poster Nikhla Hero from director Rajkumar Santoshi. His character was Vishwas Rao, a struggling actor who poses as a cop. The film received mixed reviews from critics, though Kapoor's performance was praised. As with his previous releases, the film performed poorly at the box office, prompting industry analysts to question his commercial appeal. Later that year, when he appeared in Prabhu Deva's action film R..., this changed. Despite a negative critical reception, Rajkumar's film grossed over $995 million (US$12 million) worldwide, making it Kapoor's highest-grossing release to that point. Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV called the film a "massive mess," writing that Kapoor "ends up looking more moronic than macho" in it. While filming a stunt sequence in R..., Kapoor suffered burn injuries to his back and hands. Rajkumar.
Known actor and film controversies (2014–2019)
Kapoor then collaborated with director Vishal Bhardwaj on Haider (2014), an adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet set during the 1995 Kashmir conflict, in which he played the titular role alongside Tabu and Shraddha Kapoor. The film was described as the "toughest" of Kapoor's career, and he waived his fees to appear in it. He shaved his head and learned to speak in a Kashmiri dialect for the part. Although Haider received critical acclaim, its portrayal of the Kashmir conflict sparked outrage among Indian nationalists. Mint's Sanjukta Sharma called the film a "immensely effective reimagining of Shakespeare," and praised Kapoor in particular for playing his part with "impressive zest and inventiveness." Anupama Chopra of the Hindustan Times wrote that Kapoor initially appeared uneasy in the complex central role, but that he "slowly comes to inhabit Haider, veering from rage to jealousy to madness in a heartbeat." Kapoor won several awards for the role, including the Screen Award, Producers Guild Film Award, and Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
After completing her duties as a talent judge on the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Reloaded, Kapoor appeared in Vikas Bahl's Shaandaar alongside Alia Bhatt (2015). It's a critical and commercial flop about two insomniacs who fall in love at a destination wedding. Kapoor then played a drug-addicted rock star in Udta Punjab (2016), a crime drama directed by Abhishek Chaubey that documents the epidemic of substance abuse in the Indian state of Punjab. Kapoor, a teetotaler, found playing an addict difficult. He based his character on a number of pop stars, and he was interested in highlighting his character's vulnerability despite his obnoxious actions. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) demanded extensive censorship of Udta Punjab before its theatrical release, citing the film's negative portrayal of Punjab. The demands sparked a debate in India about freedom of expression. Following a lawsuit filed by the producers against the board, the Bombay High Court approved its screening with a single scene cut in which Kapoor's character is shown urinating on people. Sukanya Verma praised the film's anti-drug message, calling Kapoor's performance "spectacularly unbridled," adding that "the believability he brings to his complex transition while preserving his inherent flakiness deserves all the praise." Kapoor won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor (which he shared with Manoj Bajpayee for Aligarh) and was nominated for Best Actor at the same ceremony.
In his third collaboration with Vishal Bharadwaj, Rangoon (2017), an epic romance set during World War II, Kapoor played a taciturn soldier who develops a romance with a film actress (played by Kangana Ranaut). The filming was hampered by a reported feud between Ranaut and Kapoor, and while both denied the reports, both stars publicly criticized the other. The film received mixed reviews; Rajeev Masand called it "overlong, indulgent to the point of exhaustion," but praised Kapoor for his "remarkable maturity" in the role. Furthermore, Mint's Uday Bhatia praised the chemistry between Ranaut and Kapoor. Rangoon's 610 million (US$7.6 million) investment was not repaid.
Kapoor next appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period drama Padmaavat (2018), co-starring Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh as Rawal Ratan Singh, a 14th-century Rajput ruler. Despite violent protests from right-wing Hindu groups who claimed the film distorted historical facts, the CBFC approved its release after several changes were made. HuffPost's Ankur Pathak was disappointed by the film's adherence to regressive patriarchal mores and chastised Kapoor for being "a bit stiff and robotic." Padmaavat had a $2 billion (US$25 million) production budget, making it the most expensive Hindi film ever made. With a worldwide gross of 5.45 billion (US$68 million), it is one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time and Kapoor's biggest success. Later that year, he starred in Batti Gul Meter Chalu, a social problem film about rural India's electricity problems, for which he learned the Garhwali dialect. Filming was temporarily halted when the production company, KriArj Entertainment, failed to pay the crew, but resumed once Bhushan Kumar took over the project. "Kapoor, working within an undercooked and confused screenplay, tries his very best to make the best of a bad deal but is unable to pack any real power," wrote Saibal Chatterjee.
In 2019, Kapoor starred in Kabir Singh, a remake of Arjun Reddy (2017), a Telugu romantic drama in which he played a self-destructive alcoholic pining for his ex-girlfriend. He struggled to separate himself from the role and feared bringing the experience home to his wife and children. He lost 14 kg for scenes in which he played a college student. Shubhra Gupta, writing for The Indian Express, found Kapoor to be "too old for this role, and his dissolution never feels as sharply realized as the one he managed so superbly in Udta Punjab." Despite this, it grossed over 3.7 billion (US$46 million) worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing Hindi film of the year and Kapoor's biggest commercial success as the sole male lead. He was nominated for Best Actor again at Filmfare.
Farzi and Hiatus (2020–present)
After a three-year hiatus, Kapoor returned to the big screen with the sports drama Jersey (2022), a remake of the Telugu film of the same name about a former cricketer looking to make a comeback in his late 30s. He suffered a forehead injury while filming a cricket sequence that required 13 stitches. The film's production and release were repeatedly pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Archika Khurana of The Times of India praised him for his credibility as a cricketer. The film did not fare well at the box office.
In 2014, Kapoor was offered a starring role in Farzi, a crime drama film directed by Raj & DK. By the end of the decade, it had evolved into a streaming series (a format Kapoor was eager to experiment with), and it was released on Amazon Prime Video in 2023. Sunny, a disillusioned artist, decides to create counterfeit money. According to Scroll.in's Nandini Ramnath, Kapoor is in "fine form despite looking too old for the part," and "reins in his tendency for self-pitying bombast to deliver a performance that complements Sunny's vanity for equating counterfeiting with art." It became the most popular Indian streaming series.
Kapoor's next projects include Ali Abbas Zafar's action film Bloody Daddy, a remake of the French film Sleepless Night (2011), and an untitled romantic comedy co-starring Kriti Sanon.
Off-screen work and personal life
Kapoor's personal life is the subject of fervent tabloid reporting in India. During the filming of Fida in 2004, he began dating Kareena Kapoor, with whom he publicly spoke. They were embroiled in a high-profile scandal after Mid Day published photos of them kissing in public. Despite the couple's claims that the photos were fabricated, the newspaper denied any wrongdoing. During the filming of Jab We Met in 2007, the couple divorced. Kapoor has decided to keep his personal life out of the spotlight since their divorce. However, tabloids speculated on his relationships with other actresses such as Vidya Balan and Priyanka Chopra. Kapoor filed a stalking complaint against former actress Vastavikta Pandit in 2012.
In March 2015, Kapoor announced his engagement to Mira Rajput, a university student from New Delhi 13 years his junior. According to the Times of India, Kapoor met Rajput through the Dharmic religious group Radha Soami Satsang Beas. On 7 July 2015, the couple married in a private ceremony in Gurgaon, and Rajput gave birth to their daughter Misha in August 2016 and son Zain in September 2018.
Aside from acting in films, Kapoor also performs on stage and hosts award shows. In 2006, he took part in the RockStars world tour, alongside Kareena Kapoor, John Abraham, Salman Khan, and three other celebrities. Kapoor co-hosted three Screen Awards ceremonies with Shah Rukh Khan from 2010 to 2012, and three International Indian Film Academy Awards with either Khan or Farhan Akhtar from 2012 to 2014.
Kapoor is a vegetarian, and she attributes her decision to the author Brian Hines' book Life is Fair. He also contributes to charitable organizations for a variety of causes. In 2010, he took part in the Superstars Ka Jalwa charity event, which raised funds for the Cine and Television Artists Association employees (CINTAA). That same year, he donated to the NGO Swayamsiddh, which assists children with special needs. The following year, he adopted three villages in support of NDTV's Greenathon, an initiative to raise environmental awareness and improve rural electricity supplies. Shiamak Davar founded the Victory Arts Foundation NGO in 2012, which helps underprivileged children through dance therapy programs. Also that year, he co-starred with other Bollywood stars in Because My World Is Not The Same, a short film directed by Zoya Akhtar to raise awareness about breast cancer. Through advertising campaigns, he supports the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals organization.
Public perception
In 2014, GQ journalist Dave Besseling described Kapoor as a "friendly, chirpy, affable frat-boy type. Someone you'd want to play video games with on a Sunday, but keep the hell away from your sister." Certain media outlets, however, have labeled Kapoor a recluse and described him as arrogant and temperamental. According to Vickey Lalwani of Mumbai Mirror, in 2012, this perceived media image prevented certain filmmakers from approaching him for roles. "I just don't socialize much, I don't party too much, I don't know what to say to the media if I'm not talking about a film that I'm doing, so yeah, maybe I'm perceived as a snob," Kapoor said of his image.
In an analysis of his career, the entertainment portal Bollywood Hungama stated that his "boy next door persona" was initially perceived as a weakness by critics, but that he turned it into a trademark. According to Jitesh Pillai of Filmfare, Kapoor defied typecasting by taking on diverse roles in crime dramas and action films after gaining recognition in urban romantic roles. He noted that Kapoor's refusal to be "slotted under any kind of tag" resulted in an erratic career path. Following the success of Jab We Met (2007) and Kaminey (2009), Kapoor's career experienced a period of decline, which he described as a series of "wrong choices," and he stated that taking on a challenging role in Haider (2014) helped him reinvent himself. According to Sonal Gera of The Indian Express, the film established him in Bollywood. Koral Dasgupta writes in her book Power of a Common Man that Kapoor does not "[conform] to any fixed rules of the trade," and that despite having a lopsided success ratio at the box office, he remains popular among audiences.
Kapoor, a well-known celebrity, has a sizable following on Twitter and Instagram. He is regarded as one of India's most attractive male celebrities, and he is frequently included in the British magazine Eastern Eye's list of the "50 Sexiest Asian Men in the World." He was ranked fourth in 2012 and 2013, and first in 2017. In 2014, he was ranked fifth on The Times of India's list of the 50 most desirable men; he was also in the top ten in 2012, 2013, and 2015. PETA named Kapoor the sexiest vegetarian man in India and Asia-Pacific in 2009 and 2011, respectively. From 2012 to 2015, 2017, and 2019, he was ranked among the top 50 in the Indian edition of Forbes' "Celebrity 100," a list based on the income and popularity of India's celebrities, peaking at number 15 in 2015. Kapoor is a brand and product ambassador for several companies, including Samsung, Elf Aquitaine, and Colgate. His wax figure was unveiled at Madame Tussauds Singapore in 2019.
