Scott Matthew Davidson, Davidson's father, was a New York firefighter who died in the World Trade Center during the September 11 attacks in 2001. In the early 2010s, Davidson appeared in minor roles on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Friends of the People, Guy Code, and Wild 'n Out. Pete Davidson: SMD (2016) and Pete Davidson: Alive from New York (2016) are his comedy specials (2020).

Davidson starred in and executive produced the 2019 comedy Big Time Adolescence, as well as co-wrote and starred in the semi-autobiographical comedy-drama The King of Staten Island (2020). Davidson went on to appear in films such as The Suicide Squad (2021), Bodies, Bodies, Bodies (2022), Meet Cute (2022), and Marmaduke (2022). (2022).

Early years

Peter Michael Davidson was born on November 16, 1993, in the New York City borough of Staten Island, the son of Amy (née Waters) and Scott Matthew Davidson. His father was a Ladder 118 firefighter in New York City who died in the line of duty during the September 11, 2001 attacks, along with the rest of his unit. He was last seen running up the stairs of the Marriott World Trade Center, which was destroyed when the Twin Towers fell. His Requiem Mass was held at St. Clare's Catholic Church on Staten Island's Great Kills. The loss had a profound effect on Davidson, who was seven at the time. He told The New York Times that it was "overwhelming," and that as a result of the trauma, he later acted out in school, ripping his hair out until he was bald. He revealed on The Breakfast Club morning radio show in October 2016 that he struggled with suicidal thoughts when he was younger and that Kid Cudi's music saved his life.

Davidson's father was primarily Jewish, with some distant German, Irish, and Italian ancestors. His mother is mostly Irish, with some distant German ancestors. He was raised Catholic and has a younger sister named Casey. Davidson attended St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School and Tottenville High School before transferring to Xaverian High School in Brooklyn and graduating in 2011. He attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights after graduating from high school. After one semester, Davidson decided to pursue a full-time career in comedy. He first tried stand-up comedy at the age of sixteen in a Staten Island bowling alley, where a group of friends, including professional baseball player Matthew Festa, dared him to take the stage.

Career

Early in one's career

Davidson first appeared on screen in the third episode of the MTV comedy series Failosophy, which premiered on February 28, 2013. The following month, he appeared in "PDA and Moms," the first of four episodes of the MTV2 reality TV comedy series Guy Code's third season. His first televised standup performance aired in June as part of a second-season episode of the Comedy Central show Gotham Comedy Live, which features standup comedians at the Gotham Comedy Club in New York City. The following month, he made his MTV2 debut on Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'N Out, the first of six appearances on the show. He later performed stand-up on television and appeared in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In 2014, he landed a role in Sober Companion, a Fox comedy pilot that never made it to series.

Saturday Night Live and other work (2014–2022)

Davidson joined the Saturday Night Live cast with the show's 40th season premiere on September 27, 2014. At the age of 20, he was the first SNL cast member born in the 1990s and one of the show's youngest ever. Davidson, the show's first new addition that season, was given a chance to audition by regular Bill Hader, whom he met while filming a small part in the 2015 Judd Apatow feature film comedy Trainwreck. Hader later informed producer Lorne Michaels about him. His debut received positive critical acclaim, with one of his most memorable skits during the season being an Indiana Jones-style sketch in which he and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson were forced to mutually suck poison out of each other's various body parts after being pelted with poison darts, an endeavour that eventually found them entangled in the "69" position. Norman Reedus shot Davidson in the chest with an arrow in another incident.

Davidson was a roaster on the Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber in March 2015, and his set was praised as one of the best of the show. Among his more audacious jokes was one about fellow roaster Snoop Dogg, host Kevin Hart, and their 2004 film Soul Plane. Davidson, whose firefighter father died responding to the September 11 attacks, called the film "the worst experience of [his] life involving a plane". He was named to the Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2016. In April of that year, Comedy Central filmed Pete Davidson: SMD, his first stand-up special, in New York City.

In January 2019, it was announced that Davidson would be touring with John Mulaney for a limited series of comedy shows titled "Sundays with Pete & John" in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. Mulaney and Davidson became friends after appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Saturday Night Live. That May, following the 44th season finale of Saturday Night Live, Travis M. Andrews of The Washington Post credited Davidson with being the season's most memorable performer and breakout star, which Andrews attributed to Davidson's mining of his personal struggles and admission of his comedic missteps, which Andrews felt gave the season a mixture of comedy and pathos.

Davidson worked with Machine Gun. Kelly was commissioned to write the sketch "A Message from the Count" for her album Hotel Diablo. In 2019, he appeared as a supporting actor in Adam Shankman's What Men Want, Jeff Tremaine's The Dirt, Thurop Van Orman's The Angry Birds Movie 2, and John Turturro's The Big Lebowski spin-off The Jesus Rolls. Davidson's Netflix stand-up special Alive from New York was released in February 2020. The King of Staten Island, which Davidson both starred in and co-wrote with Judd Apatow, who also directed, was released in May 2020. At the 46th People's Choice Awards, Davidson was nominated for The Comedy Movie Star of 2020 for his work in The King of Staten Island and The Comedy Act of 2020 Pete Davidson: Alive from New York. Davidson was cast as Joey Ramone in the Netflix biopic I Slept With Joey Ramone in April 2021, based on the late singer's brother's memoir of the same name. Davidson will also serve as a co-writer and executive producer on the project. In August 2021, he appeared as Blackguard in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. He provided the voice of Marmaduke in an animated film that will be released on Netflix on May 6, 2022. Following several long absences in season 47, it was announced shortly before the season's finale that it would be Davidson's final appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Comedy fashion

In 2018, Davidson took the stage.

Davidson has received praise for basing his comedy on his own life and employing aspects of his life that have been described as "a series of brutal truths and vulgar confessions" that make him relatable to audiences. He discusses marijuana, sex, and relationships, among other things. He recalls incidents ranging from his awkward high school experiences to his brief stay at St. Francis College. He makes light of sensitive subjects, such as the death of his father during the September 11th attacks. He claims that it empowers him to address the sense of powerlessness he felt as a result of witnessing such tragedy at such a young age. He is a fan of the Harry Potter series and has incorporated it into his comedic work.

Private life

Davidson lived in Brooklyn Heights, New York, in October 2015. In 2019, he shared a home on Staten Island with his mother, which they had purchased together. He moved into his own home on Staten Island in April 2021. Davidson announced plans to relocate from Staten Island to Brooklyn in February 2022. Leo, the son of fellow comedian and friend Ricky Velez, has Davidson as his godfather. He was classmates with Seattle Mariners pitcher Matthew Festa at St. Joseph by the Sea High School and is close friends with him.

Davidson had over 40 tattoos on his arms, legs, chest, hands, and neck by August 2018. On his left arm, Davidson has his father's firefighter badge number, 8418, tattooed. During an interview in May 2021, he stated that he was having some of them removed.

Davidson supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and on December 5, 2017, he stated on his Instagram account that he got a tattoo on his leg of Clinton, whom he called his "hero", a "badass", and "one of the strongest people in the universe". Clinton thanked Davidson for the compliment, joking, "This makes me feel a lot less awkward about having a Pete Davidson tattoo for years." He backed Joe Biden for President of the United States in 2020.

Davidson and fellow SNL colleague Colin Jost purchased a decommissioned Staten Island ferry in January 2022 with plans to convert it into a comedy club.

Health

Davidson was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when he was 17 or 18 years old, and he uses medical marijuana for pain management and recreational purposes. Davidson announced on his Instagram account on March 6, 2017, that he had quit drugs and was sober for the first time in eight years. Davidson clarified during an interview on comedian Marc Maron's podcast that the only drug he used was marijuana, and that, while he has since reduced his use significantly, the personal and emotional problems he initially assumed were the result of his daily marijuana use were actually caused by his newly diagnosed borderline personality disorder, for which he has since been treated.

On December 3, 2018, Davidson shared a candid Instagram post in which he expressed suicidal thoughts before deleting his Instagram account entirely. In response to social media posts from followers and former fiancée Ariana Grande, the New York Police Department conducted a wellness check on Davidson. Davidson was in the Saturday Night Live studio at the time, preparing for the final episode of the year before the holiday break, and made a humorous reference to the Instagram post during the Weekend Update segment of the first episode following the holiday break on January 19, 2019.

Relationships

Davidson has been in several high-profile relationships, and his dating life is frequently covered by entertainment journalists.

From 2014 to 2015, Davidson dated comedian Carly Aquilino, and from 2016 to 2018, he dated Cazzie David, the daughter of comedian Larry David.
He began dating singer Ariana Grande in May 2018. Davidson announced his engagement to Grande in June 2018, but the engagement was called off in October 2018. "Pete Davidson," Grande's song about Davidson, appears on her 2018 album Sweetener. She also referenced him in her song "Thank U, Next" with the lyric, "Even almost got married/ And for Pete I'm so thankful".

In January 2019, Davidson was reported to be in a relationship with actress Kate Beckinsale, twenty years his senior, but by April they had "called time on their romance". In response to media comments about the age difference, he stated that he was unaware of such a difference and that the media should question older men in long-term relationships with younger women, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Alec Baldwin, Larry King, and Donald Trump, about it.
He also dated Andie MacDowell's daughter, actress Margaret Qualley, until their relationship ended in October 2019. From October 2019 to January 2020, he was dating model Kaia Gerber. After a five-month relationship, he split from Bridgerton actress Phoebe Dynevor, daughter of actress Sally Dynevor, in August 2021.

Following Kardashian's appearance on Saturday Night Live in October 2021, Davidson and Kim Kardashian were first seen out together. During her hosting stint on Saturday Night Live, the two shared an on-screen kiss in a Disney-themed sketch in which they played Jasmine and Aladdin. They started dating in November of 2021. Kardashian previously filed for divorce from Kanye West in February 2021. Kardashian was legally declared single by a judge in March 2022, following a very public split. West referenced the relationship in his 2022 track "Eazy", in which he threatens to "beat Pete Davidson's ass". The Eazy music video featured a claymation figure of Davidson being kidnapped, buried, and with his head severed. West went on to call Davidson a "dickhead" and "Hillary Clinton's ex boyfriend" on Instagram in February of the same year. After nine months of dating, Davidson and Kardashian called it quits in August 2022.

Incident of stalking

In March 2021, a woman falsely claimed to be Davidson's wife and misrepresented his involvement with her business. The woman was reported to have illegally entered his home and was later charged.

Space travel

Blue Origin announced in March 2022 that Davidson would be a "honorary guest" alongside five paying customers onboard NS-20, a suborbital flight of its New Shepard craft scheduled for later that month. The flight, however, was rescheduled, and Blue Origin announced that Davidson was "no longer able" to join the craft's crew.

Controversies

The Catholic Church

In March 2019, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn demanded an apology from Davidson following an SNL sketch in which he compared the Catholic Church to R. Kelly, an entertainer accused of paedophilia. According to Davidson in the sketch, "[Kelly] is a monster who should be imprisoned indefinitely. But isn't it the same thing to support the Catholic Church as it is to support R. Kelly? Except for the fact that one's music is significantly better, I don't see much of a difference." In a statement posted on its website, the diocese criticised the ""The faithful of our Church are disgusted by the harassment by those in news and entertainment, and this sketch offends millions," he said. Making fun of this difficult period in the Church's history serves no purpose." In September 2018, the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens agreed to a record $27.5 million settlement for sex abuse allegations.

Crenshaw, Dan

Davidson was widely chastised for making fun of Republican congressional candidate Dan Crenshaw, who wears an eye patch due to a wound sustained while serving as a US Navy SEAL in Afghanistan. "I'm sorry, I know he lost his eye in war or whatever," Davidson said, comparing Crenshaw to "a hitman in a porno movie."

In response to public outrage over the comments, Crenshaw appeared alongside Davidson on an SNL Weekend Update segment the following Saturday. "I mean this from the bottom of my heart: it was a poor choice of words... the man is a war hero, and he deserves all the respect in the world," Davidson apologised to Crenshaw. Crenshaw accepted Davidson's apology and urged Americans to "never forget" veterans' service and sacrifices. Crenshaw also remembered Davidson's father, a firefighter who died in the September 11 attacks. Crenshaw and others believe the joke and subsequent attention helped him win Texas's 2nd congressional district in the 2018 midterm elections.

In his 2020 Netflix special Alive from New York, Davidson rescinded his previous apology to Crenshaw, implying that he only did so because he was told to. Davidson tells the audience during the performance, "I didn't believe I had done anything wrong. It was as if words had been twisted so that a man could become famous. So I made fun of this guy with an eye patch, and then I felt compelled to apologise." Crenshaw responded by saying that, while he had hoped that Davidson's apology was genuine, "you can never tell with comedians" and added, "To be fair, if we took everything that comedians said on a Netflix special seriously, man, our country would be in a world of hurt. I'd like to remember the guy I met and hung out with on Saturday Night Live."
Davidson stated when he left SNL in May 2022 that "Much has changed. Fox News went from calling me a monster for making fun of Congressman Dan Crenshaw's eye patch to making fun of Dan Crenshaw's eye patch in three years." He was referring to Tucker Carlson of Fox News calling Crenshaw "Eyepatch McCain."
