Ok Taec-yeon (Korean: ; Hanja: ; born December 27, 1988) is a South Korean rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, and entrepreneur who goes by the moniker Taecyeon. He is the lead rapper for South Korean boy band 2PM.

Ok made her acting debut in the Korean drama Cinderella's Sister in 2010, and she has since appeared in Dream High (2011), Who Are You? (2013), Wonderful Days (2014), Assembly (2015), Let's Fight, Ghost (2016), Save Me (2017), The Game: Towards Zero (2020), Secret Royal Inspector & Joy (2021), and Vincenzo (2021), as well as the films Marriage Blue (2013) and House of the Disappeared (2013). Childhood and education

Ok was born in Seoul, South Korea, but moved to Bedford, Massachusetts, a small town in the Greater Boston Area, with his parents and older sister Jihyen when he was 10 years old. His sister Jihyen persuaded him to take part in a JYP Entertainment audition that she had seen advertised on the Internet. On his 17th birthday, both of them traveled to New York City after his reluctant agreement to participate. A week later, he was chosen as one of the final 35 and was invited to South Korea to compete further. Ok initially applied to be a model, but the judges suggested he try dancing and singing instead. He was eventually chosen as one of the dozen finalists (along with future members Lee Junho and Hwang Chansung) to compete in the reality show Superstar Survival, but he was the first contestant to leave.

Ok lived in Massachusetts for seven years, attending Bedford High School where he was a member of the Chess Club, Jazz Band, JV Soccer Team, and National Honor Society, before returning to pursue his career in Korea. Ok attended Young Dong High School in Seoul before transferring to Dankook University and the Korea University Graduate School of International Studies.

He speaks English, Korean, and Japanese. Ok is also fluent in Busan dialect, which he used in the KBS2 drama Wonderful Days.

A career in music

2PM makes its debut.

He appeared in Mnet's Hot Blood Men in 2008, which follows the intense training of 13 trainees in order to become a member of the boy band One Day. Ok joined the latter of two boy bands formed by One Day, 2AM and 2PM. Six months after Hot Blood was aired on TV, 2PM debuted with their first single "10 Points Out of 10 Points" from their first EP Hottest Time of the Day, but it wasn't until their second EP 2:00PM Time For Change that they skyrocketed in the Korean music industry.

Career as a sole proprietor

Ok appeared in the 2009 hit song "My Ear's Candy" by Baek Ji-young. Baek revealed that she requested Ok to appear on the song after hearing his rap on 2PM's single "10 Points Out of 10 Points."

Ok collaborated with fellow Dankook University alumni students to create the digital album Blue Bears with Taecyeon in 2012. The album was performed live at Dankook University for the matriculation ceremony. Ok wrote the rap lyrics for the title song, "Wings." The second song in the set was a remake of Lee Gwangjo's "A Night Like Tonight," with an original rap written by Ok himself. The album was released in February 2012, with all proceeds benefiting the University.

In 2017, Ok released his first solo Japanese album, Taecyeon Special: Winter Hitori. On January 2-3, he held his first solo concert, "Taecyeon (From 2PM) Premium Concert," at the Tokyo Dome City Hall in Japan as part of the solo project.

Following the expiration of his contract with JYP Entertainment, Ok signed an exclusive contract with 51K, an agency founded by actor So Ji-sub, in July 2018. Despite the move, his former agency reported that he will remain a member of 2PM.

Careers in acting and hosting

He previously co-hosted SBS' music show Inkigayo with Wooyoung and was a regular cast member on Family Outing 2 until it was cancelled.
In 2010, he made his acting debut alongside Moon Geun-young and Chun Jung-myung in the KBS drama series Cinderella's Sister. He then starred in the high school drama Dream High, which received both domestic and international acclaim.

Ok joined the cast of FujiTV's Sunday drama Boku to Star no 99 Nichi in September 2011, alongside Japanese actor Nishijima Hidetoshi and South Korean actress Kim Tae-hee. His first regular role in a Japanese drama.

Ok was announced as an on-screen couple with Taiwanese actress Emma Wu in the Global Edition of the reality show We Got Married in February 2013. The same year, he made his film debut in the romantic comedy Marriage Blue, for which he wrote two songs for the soundtrack.
In 2014, he appeared as a tough-fisted bodyguard in KBS' weekend drama Wonderful Days. The following year, he appeared on tvN's cooking variety show Three Meals a Day, which was directed by Na PD. In 2015, he returned for a second season. On the show, Ok was praised for his hardworking image and easygoing personality.

Ok was cast in KBS' political drama Assembly in 2015. He portrays an aspiring police officer who works as an official's chauffeur by day and studies at the library to pass his entrance exams by night.

In 2016, he appeared in the horror comedy Hey Ghost, Let's Fight with Kim So-hyun, as well as the Lotte Duty Free web-drama First Seven Kisses.

In 2017, he co-starred with veteran actress Kim Yunjin in the mystery thriller House of the Disappeared. He then appeared alongside Seo Ye-ji in OCN's thriller drama Save Me.

In 2020, he appeared in the mystery drama The Game: Towards Zero, reuniting with Lee Yeon-hee, with whom he had previously appeared in the 2013 film Marriage Blue. It was his first acting role since leaving the military.

In 2021, he played the main antagonist in the tvN dramaVincenzo. It was his first major antagonistic role since making his acting debut. Ok also starred in the historical drama Secret Royal Inspector & Joy, which premiered in November 2021 on both tvN and iQiyi.

In the war action film Hansan: Rising Dragon, the second installment of Kim Han-Yi min's Sun-sin trilogy, he played Lim Jun-young, a Joseon spy who sneaks into a Japanese army camp in 2022.

Enlistment in the military

On December 9, 2010, a JYP spokesperson stated, "Taec-yeon would like to give up his American permanent residence visa, and he recently received his official confirmation for his permanent residence cancellation on December 1."

Ok underwent a physical examination for drafting but received a physical body status sufficient only for enlistment as a public service personnel in 2008 due to his poor vision and a dislocated shoulder. He had surgery in 2012 and 2013 to correct the disk as well as to remove pins in his upper arm from a serious break in 2013. He was cleared for active duty in December 2013, but his enlistment was postponed due to a heavy workload.

Ok enlisted as an active-duty soldier on September 4, 2017, and began his mandatory military service. He finished basic military training on October 18 and was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division in Gyeonggi Province as a military instruction assistant.

Ok took part in various 2018 Winter Olympics events as a volunteer under the command of the Ministry of National Defense in February 2018. (South Korea). He hosted numerous cultural shows and concerts, and he performed with 2PM at the Olympic Headliner Show.

During his congratulatory speech at the 15th Exemplary Military Servicemen Awards, which Ok was hosting, then-Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon recognized and praised Ok's efforts to enlist in active duty.

Ok led the future combat system demonstration at the 70th Armed Forces Day Celebration on October 1, 2018. The Warrior Platform program, which includes new and improved combat gear and equipment, was introduced during the demonstration. "Corporal Ok Taec-yeon gave up his American residency; he set a great example, as he received surgery for the discs in his back and accepted active duty despite the fact that he had previously approved for alternative service," one of the event officials said. He is currently carrying out his military responsibilities. We actively encouraged him to attend the Armed Forces Day event because we thought it would be meaningful for him."

Ok also ranked first on real-time search engines while leading the final salute to President Moon Jae-in.

Ok was promoted to Sergeant in February 2019 for his outstanding performance as a military instruction assistant at the 9th Armed Forces Division in Gyeonggi Province.

Ok was named a 'Special Class Warrior' by his division commander and a 'Model Soldier' by the Ministry of National Defense for his outstanding records, exemplary character, and outstanding performance. People on the internet dubbed him "Captain Korea" because of his physique, which resembled that of the famous Marvel superhero Captain America. Many news websites and broadcasts have used the actor's nickname in their headlines. Ok expressed the pressure of having the nickname in one interview, saying, "It was a nickname that brought a lot of pressure, but it also made me want to work that much harder." I'll keep working hard to live up to that moniker."

Ok's military service ended on May 16, 2019.

OKCAT

Ok held a 30-minute press conference on ustream in 2013 to introduce the public to "Okcat," a green-colored cat character. Okcat emoticons were previously released on the KakaoTalk chat application. During the conference, Ok discussed the evolution of the character and shared sketches with the audience. On the same day, the "Okcat" shop opened, featuring a line of products with the image of the Okcat.
