Dhupia was born to a Punjabi Sikh family in (modern-day Kochi), India. Her father, Commander Pradip Singh Dhupia, is a retired Indian Navy officer, and her mother, Manpinder (Babli Dhupia), is a housewife. She attended Naval Public School in Cochin before transferring to Navy Children's School in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. She earned her bachelor's degree in history from Jesus and Mary College in New Delhi, which is connected with the University of Delhi.
Career
Dhupia made her acting debut in New Delhi in the play Graffiti. She then modelled for commercials and participated in a music video for Indipop band Euphoria.
She later appeared in the television series Rajdhani. She competed in the Femina Miss India pageant in 2002, when she was crowned Miss India 2002. She was then flown to the Miss Universe competition in Puerto Rico, where she finished in the top ten. Dhupia had planned to join the Indian Foreign Service after winning the pageant, but instead chose to pursue a career in acting.
A career in film
Her Bollywood début was with the 2003 film Qayamat: City Under Threat, which had a mediocre box office performance. She rose to prominence with her title part in Julie and subsequently appeared in Sheesha (2005) as twin sisters in a dual role, but the film did not perform well at the box office. Dhupia went on to star in films such as Kyaa Kool Hai Hum (2005) and Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), both of which were box office successes, and she also appeared in a section in the anthology film Dus Kahaniyaan (2007).
Dhupia went on to participate in a number of films as a supporting actor, including Chup Chup Ke (2006), Ek Chalis Ki Last Local (2007), Mithya (2008), Maharathi (2008), Singh Is Kinng (2008), and Dasvidaniya (2008). In 2011, she portrayed Eva Braun in the film Dear Friend Hitler, which was based on Mahatma Gandhi.
Dhupia has also walked the runway for designers such as Rohit Bal and D'damas. Dhupia created and presented the Bollywood podcast #NoFilterNeha on the Indian music app Saavn in 2016, in which she interviews Bollywood celebs. The broadcast was well-received, with over 2.3 million listens. Dhupia released Season 4 in November 2019 with plans to expand the podcast into a web series.
In her personal life and off-screen work, Dhupia has participated in the Mumbai Marathon to benefit the Concern India Foundation, raising over 5 lakh rupees. She also assisted in raising funds for the victims of the 2011 Sikkim earthquake. She performed at the 2012 GR8 Women's Award. Dhupia eats only vegetables.
She was a special guest at the Hiru Golden Film Awards 2014 in Sri Lanka, alongside Bollywood actors Sunil Shetty, Vivek Oberoi, Anil Kapoor, and actress Bipasha Basu.
On May 10, 2018, Dhupia married actor Angad Bedi, the son of former Indian cricket captain Bishan Singh Bedi, in a private ceremony in a Gurudwara. She gave birth to a child named Mehr Dhupia Bedi on November 18, 2018. Certain elements of the media fat-shamed Dhupia in 2019 for her post-pregnancy weight gain. In an Instagram post on July 19, 2021, she and Angad announced that they are expecting their second child. On 3 October 2021, she gave birth to her second child, a baby boy whom she called Guriq Singh Dhupia Bedi. She made the decision to depart MTV Roadies.
