Louis Hofmann is a German actor who was born on June 3, 1997. He rose to prominence as the lead in the 2011 German film Tom Sawyer [de], and in 2015, he won the Bodil Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a teenage German POW in the Danish film Land of Mine. He is also known for his role as Jonas in the German Netflix Original series Dark, which premiered in 2017.

Life and work

Hofmann was born in Bergisch Gladbach's Bensberg district and raised in Cologne. His first television appearance was for Servicezeit, an evening magazine show on the WDR Fernsehen television network. He appeared in Die Ausflieger, a segment of the show that tested family recreational activities. He decided to become an actor after two and a half years at Servicezeit and applied to an acting agency. He was later represented by Agentur Schwarz.

In 2009, Hofmann appeared as a guest star in the legal comedy-drama Danni Lowinski and the television series Der verlorene Vater. He was also in the television movie Tod in Istanbul. He appeared in Wilsberg and Alarm for Cobra 11 in 2010.

In director Hermine Huntgeburth's 2011 German film adaptation of the classic Mark Twain novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Hofmann played the titular Tom Sawyer. Along with Leon Seidel, who played Huck Finn, he sang on the film's soundtrack in the song "Barfuß Gehen" ("Going Barefoot"). The Adventures of Huck Finn [de] (German: Die Abenteuer des Huck Finn) was released in German theaters on December 20, 2012. Hofmann appeared as a guest star in an episode of the television series Stolberg in 2013. Hofmann first appeared in the comedy The Nearly Perfect Man on October 24, 2013. His performance as Wolfgang in Marc Brummund's 2015 film Sanctuary (German: Freistatt) earned him the Bavarian Film Prize for Best Newcomer Actor in 2015 and the German Actors Award (Deutscher Schauspielerpreis) in 2016. In 2016, he won Best Supporting Actor at Denmark's Bodil Awards for his performance as a German POW in the Danish-German co-production Land of Mine (Danish: Under sandet). He received the Special Prize Jaeger-LeCoultre Homage to German Cinema at the 2016 German Film Awards, which honors the work of German actors in international films.

In 2016, Hofmann starred as Phil in Center of My World (German: Die Mitte der Welt), a coming-of-age romantic drama film directed by Jakob M. Erwa and based on Andreas Steinhöfel's 1998 bestselling novel The Center of the World. The European Film Promotion organization presented him with a European Shooting Stars Award at the 2017 Berlinale.

Hofmann was cast as Jonas Kahnwald in Dark, a science fiction thriller that premiered on Netflix on December 1, 2017. His character is one of the main characters and the main love interest for Martha Nielsen. On June 21, 2019, the second season was released. On June 27, 2020, the third and final season was released.
