Kwon Sang-woo (Kweon Sang-u; born 5 August 1976) is a South Korean actor. In 2003, he shot to fame with the romantic comedy My Tutor Friend and the melodrama series Stairway to Heaven.
Career
In the late 1990s, Kwon Sang-woo, the most visible example of the so-called mom-zzang (slang for "great body") movement, began his career as a fashion model. His first acting role was in the TV drama Delicious Proposal, and he received only minor roles on television for the first few years of his career before making his big-screen debut in the martial arts film Volcano High (2001). The following year, he co-starred in the comedy Make It Big (2002) with his real-life best friend Song Seung-heon.
Kwon made his breakthrough in 2003 with the phenomenally successful romantic comedy My Tutor Friend, in which he played a troubled high school boy tutored by a college student of the same age (played by actress Kim Ha-neul). This was followed by appearances in My Good Partner, the world's first mobile phone movie, and Project X, a music video collection.
His next film, which was released in early 2004, was also a success. Once Upon a Time in High School depicted 1970s authoritarian society through the lens of a notoriously violent high school. At the same time, Kwon's TV tearjerker Stairway to Heaven was receiving high ratings of over 40%. The drama eventually aired throughout Asia, propelling him to regional stardom.
Kwon's follow-up film, Love, So Divine, about a priest in training who falls in love, received mixed reviews and drew little attention from audiences.
Kwon starred in the big-budget action noir Running Wild in 2006, about a vicious detective, prosecutor, and criminal. Running Wild received positive reviews but underwhelming box office returns, and Kwon's subsequent film, Almost Love, a romantic comedy reuniting him with Kim Ha-neul, also failed to replicate the success of their previous film.
The films Fate and More Than Blue bombed at the box office, and his small-screen projects Sad Love Story, Bad Love, and Cinderella Man received low ratings.
Things improved in 2010 with the box-office success of Korean War film 71: Into the Fire, which Kwon reportedly did not hesitate to take on, despite playing a high school student once again. His drama Daemul, about Korea's first female president (played by Go Hyun-jung), was also very popular during its run, remaining at the top of the TV charts for 11 weeks and finishing with viewership ratings around 26%.
Kwon starred in the 2011 melodrama Pained as a man with analgesia, or the inability to feel physical pain, who falls in love with a woman who has hemophilia. Pained, a departure from Kwak Kyung-previous taek's macho films, was based on an original story by webcomic artist Kang Full. Kwak stated, "The production company informed me that Kwon Sang-woo was considering taking the part, and I told them that I would only do it if Kwon did. There was no one else around."
In order to broaden his acting career in Asia, Kwon starred in films with Chinese superstars Cecilia Cheung (romantic comedy Shadows of Love, previously known as Repeat, I Love You) and Jackie Chan in 2012. (action film CZ12). In 2010, he also made his singing debut in a DVD released in Japan. Kwon played an Asian-American Broadway producer who returns to China to stage a musical production in Yunnan Province and falls in love with the leading lady of his stage musical in the Chinese TV series Feng Hua Xue Yue (Wind Flower Snow Moon).
He then starred alongside Soo Ae in Yawang (also known as Queen of Ambition), a film based on the third installment of Park In-21-part kwon's saga Daemul (the 2010 SBS TV series of the same name, which also starred Kwon, was based on the comic's second book).
In 2013, Kwon was cast in his first medical drama, Medical Top Team, directed by Moon Embracing the Sun and written by Brain. He portrayed a straightforward yet caring genius surgeon. In 2014, he reunited with Stairway to Heaven co-star Choi Ji-woo in Temptation, a film about a married, indebted businessman who agrees to a deal with a female CEO in exchange for her "ownership" of his body.
In Honey Enemy, a 2015 Chinese romance film co-written and directed by Zhang Yuqi, he played the owner of an internet startup company. Kwon then starred in the comedy film The Accidental Detective, about a misfit comic book rental shop owner who becomes involved in a murder investigation.
In 2016, Kwon co-starred in the crime comedy drama Queen of Mystery with Choi Kang-hee. Kwon returned to the show for the second season, which aired in 2018.
Kwon appeared in the crime comedy The Accidental Detective 2: In Action in 2018. He also appeared in the romantic comedy Shall We Do It Again.
"I hope I'm remembered as an actor whose work the audience looks forward to rather than an actor who acts well," Kwon said in an interview.
Commercial interests
Kwon founded the cosmetics company Natural Tears, of which he is the owner and CEO, as well as the first advertising model for the brand TEARS, in 2009. It was named after his fans' nickname "Mr. Tears" in recognition of his tear-jerking performance in Stairway to Heaven.
He also founded the Myeong-dong cafe Tea'Us and is the largest shareholder in the Bali resort Ocean Blue Hotel. Kwon's Bundang-gu property is estimated to be worth 18 billion.
Personal life
Unlike many Korean male stars who were required to serve in the military during the peak of their careers, Kwon served in the military before becoming an actor.
Kwon's mother is a Roman Catholic, and he converted after playing a seminarian in the film Love, So Divine. Francisco is his confirmation name.
On September 28, 2008, Kwon married actress and former Miss Korea Son Tae-young at the Shilla Hotel. His wife gave birth to a baby boy named Luke on February 6, 2009. (nicknamed Rookie). On January 10, 2015, their second child, a daughter, was born.
Controversy
Kwon filed a complaint against Kim Tae-chon, the godfather of Beomseobangpa (one of Korea's three major criminal gangs), in 2006 for threatening him after he failed to keep his promise to hold a fan meeting in Japan. Kwon and the defendant eventually reached an agreement, but prosecutors continued to look into possible connections between kkangpae and Japanese Yakuza and Chinese crime syndicates looking to capitalize on the Korean Wave entertainment business.
Due to his wife's previous dating history, there was fan backlash to his 2008 marriage. Kwon stated on Kang Ho-talk dong's show Golden Fishery in 2009, "After I got married, membership in my fan cafe dwindled from 240,000 to 135,000 - it was like a stock market crash." He also stated that prior to his marriage, he had an average of seven TV commercials per year, but that by early 2009, that number had dropped to zero.
Kwon was involved in a car accident in Gangnam District in the early hours of June 12, 2010. According to reports, Kwon was driving on the wrong side of the road when he collided with a parked car. He then collided with the police car that had been tailing him, continued driving, and crashed into a tree before fleeing the scene on foot. He turned himself in at Gangnam Police Station two days later, claiming he had not been drunk. Kwon later apologized publicly in a handwritten letter and was fined $7 million by a Seoul district court.
