Kim Se-jeong (Korean: 김세정; born August 28, 1996), known mononymously as Sejeong, is a South Korean singer and actress. She finished second in Mnet's girl group survival show Produce 101, becoming a member of the project girl group I.O.I. She was also a member of Jellyfish Entertainment's Gugudan girl group. She is currently working as a solo artist and actress, and she is best known for her lead roles in the television series School 2017 (2017), The Uncanny Counter (2020-2021), and Business Proposal (2019). Childhood and education

Kim Se-jeong was born on August 28, 1996, in Gimje, North Jeolla Province, but moved to Anyang, Gyeonggi, where she lived at her aunt's house with her mother and older brother. Her parents divorced when she was a child, leaving her mother to raise her and her brother on her own. She previously stated that she did not contact her father until she was in her third grade. Kim competed in track and field in elementary and middle school and was a member of her high school's Theatre Club before making her debut. Kim passed Jellyfish Entertainment's auditions through a competition of 3,000 to 1 ratio, thus becoming a trainee. Kim is currently pursuing a degree in practical music at Hanyang Women's University.

At the age of 16, Kim competed in the second season of the competition television show K-pop Star 2 in 2012. She did not advance past the second round ranking audition, but Yang Hyun-suk brought her back as a wildcard for the casting round, where Kim sang a duet of Taeyang's "I Need A Girl" with fellow contestant Jo Yoo-min. Yang cast both of them, pairing Kim with contestants Nicole Curry and Lee Soo-kyung in the final round of casting. She was eliminated from the competition at the end of the round.

Kim appeared on the reality survival show Produce 101 in January 2016, alongside fellow trainees Kim Na-young and Kang Mi-na, to compete for the chance to debut in a Mnet project girl group. All three were assigned to "Group A" in the first episode of the programme and Kim achieved the first-place ranking on several episodes, earning the nickname "God Sejeong". On April 1, 2016, the programme came to an end, and the final lineup of I.O.I, consisting of the top 11 poll-winners, was announced. Kim was the runner-up contestant, receiving 525,352 votes and officially joining the girl group I.O.I. They made their debut with the lead single "Dream Girls" from the album Chrysalis on May 4, 2016. I.O.I promoted for less than a year before disbanding in January 2017. On June 10, 2016, YMC Entertainment revealed that Kim would not be taking part in I.O.I's unit promotions but would instead return to her agency to debut and promote with its upcoming girl group. While still a member of I.O.I, Kim and fellow I.O.I member Kang Mi-na officially debuted as members of South Korean girl group Gugudan with the lead single "Wonderland" on June 28, 2016. Kim took part in Jellyfish Entertainment's music channel project Jelly Box on November 23, 2016, and released the single "Flower Way," produced by Zico, along with a music video. The track reached number two on the Gaon Digital Chart. Kim received her first music programme trophy as a solo artist with "Flower Way" on the November 30 episode of Show Champion, making her one of the fastest soloist to win in a music show. Kim released the song "If Only" for the soundtrack of the drama The Legend of the Blue Sea on January 12, 2017. Later that year, she collaborated with Block B's Lee Tae-il on the digital single "I Like You, I Don't," which peaked at number 8 on the Gaon Music Charts. Kim also co-wrote "Star Blossom" with NCT's Doyoung for the SM Station Season 2 music project.

Aside from singing, Kim established herself as a "ace" in variety shows through her frequent appearances on popular entertainment shows. Kim hosted the new KBS show Talents for Sale alongside Kim Jong-kook, Lee Seo-jin and Noh Hong-chul where she displayed a variety of talents on the show and earned the nickname 'Variety Cheat Key'. She was later nominated for "Rookie Variety" at the 15th KBS Entertainment Awards. In March 2017, she joined the reality-documentary Law of the Jungle in Sumatra headed by the chief Kim Byung-man in a remote area in Sumatra, Indonesia. Kim displayed her athletic and survival skills such as diving and fishing for several episodes earning her a "survival ace" nickname by the producers. On the 11th SBS Entertainment Awards, she received the Best Challenge Award. Later, Kim demonstrated her physical abilities and was dubbed "Wonder Sejeong" when she joined the Boat Horn Clenched Fists crew on a fishing mission in Imjado, an island in county in South Jeolla Province, with Kim Jong-min, Lee Sangmin, Kim Byung-man, and others.

In July 2017, she made her major acting debut as Ra Eun-ho in KBS2's teen drama School 2017, for which she received a "Best New Actress" award at the 31st KBS Drama Awards for her portrayal of the bubbly and charismatic Eun-ho. She also performed the series' soundtrack, "Believe in this Moment," with her group Gugudan. Kim was confirmed as a regular cast member in Netflix's first Korean variety show Busted! in September 2017, alongside variety veterans Yoo Jae-suk, Kim Jong-min, Lee Kwang-soo, Ahn Jae-wook, actress Park Min-young, and fellow idol Oh Se-hun. Lee Seung-gi joined the cast of the variety show in its second season, which lasted three seasons. She also joined Honey Lee, Lee Se-young, and Sandara Park as a permanent MC for OnStyle's Get It Beauty that month. Kim became the first special co-host of Baek Jong-Alley won's Restaurant, a cooking variety show hosted by celebrity chef Baek Jong-won, in January 2018.

Kim and fellow Jellyfish Entertainment artist LEO of VIXX were chosen to perform the South Korean national football team's official cheer song, "We, the Reds," for the 2018 World Cup Tournament. In June 2018, she was cast as a member of the MDRS team led by Kim Byung-man for the third time, along with actress Ha Ji-won and 2 PM's Nichkhun, for tvN's sci-fi variety show Galileo: Awakened Universe, which explores the possibility of life on Mars. All members flew to Utah, USA, to the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS), the world's largest and longest-running Mars surface simulation facility. They were the first Korean entertainers to visit the Research Station.

Kim and fellow Produce 101 alumnae Mina and Nayoung formed the Gugudan subgroup Gugudan SeMiNa in June 2018. They made their debut with the single "SeMiNa" on July 10, 2018. Kim released the song "Paramour" for the soundtrack of the drama Mr. Sunshine in September 2018.

2019–present: Solo career, musical debut, and acting success

Kim then went on to play a timpanist who lost her memories due to traumatic events in the mystery romantic-comedy drama I Wanna Hear Your Song in 2019. She later won the K-Drama Hallyu Star Award for the role at the 2019 KBS Drama Awards. Kim released the single "Tunnel" in collaboration with Dingo Music on December 2, 2019, followed by her first self-written and composed extended play titled Plant (Korean: ; RR: Hwabun), with its lead single of the same name, on March 17, 2020, after a year of hiatus as a singer and three years since her solo debut song. On The Show, she received her second music award show trophy for her single. Except for the lead single, she wrote and composed all of the songs on her EP. Kim's song "All of My Days" was released for the soundtrack of the drama Crash Landing on You, charting at number 50 on the Gaon Digital Chart, and was followed by "What My Heart Says" for the soundtrack of Record of Youth. She followed up with the digital single "Whale" on August 17, 2020.

Kim then made her musical debut as the female lead in Return: The Promise of the Day, an original army musical about excavating the remains of heroic soldiers who sacrificed themselves to protect their country during the Korean War. On July 15, 2020, she was confirmed to play the role of Do Ha-na in the fantasy thriller drama The Uncanny Counter. Kim and her co-stars trained in an action school before filming the drama to prepare for their respective roles. The drama went on to become the highest-rated OCN series of all time, and its enormous popularity resulted in a season 2 renewal. Kim's self-written and composed song "Meet Again," which charted at 147 on the Gaon Digital chart, also contributed to the drama's OST. After two years of inactivity, Jellyfish Entertainment officially disbanded Gugudan on December 31, 2020, and Kim renewed her contract with the company as a solo artist and actress on May 11, 2021.

On March 9, 2021, it was revealed that Kim was in the middle of preparing for a comeback. Kim released her second self-written and composed EP, I'm, on March 29, 2021, with the lead single "Warning." Later that year, her song "Can I Go Back" was included on MC Mong's Flower 9 album. Kim will make her second musical appearance in Red Book, a musical drama about women's growth that seeks pride and dignity in the Victorian era, on April 5, 2021. She portrayed Anna, the story's protagonist who defied all odds against Victorian-era prejudice against women. Kim performed 28 shows between June 7 and August 24, 2021. Red Book Musical received a 9.9 out of 10 viewer rating, and it currently has the highest viewer rating among the top 20 sales for 2021 Musicals. The musical would later win the Best Picture Award, as well as a nomination for Best New Musical Actress for Kim at the 2022 Korean Musical Awards.

Kim and the members of I.O.I celebrated their fifth debut anniversary with a reunion live stream show called "Yes, I Love It!" on May 4, 2021. On July 23, 2021, Kim collaborated with Municon and released the digital single "Baby I Love U", which is a remake of the same song by Japanese singer TEE. Kim co-hosted the 2021 MBC Entertainment Awards with Jun Hyun-moo and Lee Sang-yi at the end of 2021.

Kim returned to the small screen in February 2022 as the female lead in the SBS romantic comedy Business Proposal, alongside Ahn Hyo-seop. The drama was one of the most talked-about Korean dramas of the year, with the highest viewership ratings (11.6%) for a terrestrial Mon-Tue drama in 2022 and the fourth most watched drama on National TV overall. The drama is the first Korean-made TV series to be shown on a local TV channel and Netflix at the same time, ranking first on the official viewership chart and eighth overall in Netflix's Most Popular Non-English Shows for 2022. Kim's performance drew praises from viewers and critics and dubbed her as the new Romantic Comedy Princess and earned the nickname "Emma Stone of Korea". Kim performed an acoustic version of "Love, Maybe" as a bonus track. The song reached number 108 on the Gaon Digital Chart and number 92 on the K-pop Hot 100.

Kim also appeared alongside Choi Daniel and Nam Yoon-su in another SBS Drama Today's Webtoon. Kim's first solo fan meeting was scheduled to be held at Yes24 Live Hall on March 26, but was later postponed to April 23, after she tested positive for COVID-19. On November 4, 6, and 11, Kim held her first overseas fan meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia, Bangkok, Thailand, and Tokyo, Japan.

At the end of the year, Kim was ranked third in the Actress category and sixth overall for RACOI's Most Mentioned Drama Actors/Actresses for the year 2022, as well as winning the Asia Artist Award's Popularity and Best Actor Awards. Kim co-hosted the SBS Drama Awards with Business Proposal co-star Ahn Hyo-seop and comedian Shin Dong-yup. She previously won first place in the Female Advertising Model Brand Reputation survey in June and July of 2017.

She was the Crocs Come As You Are Global Advertising Model, alongside international actors Natalie Dormer, Zooey Deschanel, Gina Jin, and Japanese model Suzu Hirose. She was chosen as the brand model for Coca-Spring Cola's Summer campaign in 2018, alongside actor Park Bo-gum. She was the exclusive model for Lotte High-Mart and appeared in Lotte's popular Water Park Commercial Film alongside Astro's Cha Eun-woo. In January 2019, she was named the new face of Good Day Soju, alongside celebrity chef Baek Jong-won. Kim appeared in an advertisement for Dong Won Tuna alongside actor Jo Jung-suk. She and her The Uncanny Counter co-stars Yeom Hye-ran and Moon Suk modelled for the Dyson CoralTM Hair straightener product in 2020. Ambassadorship

Kim was chosen as an ambassador for the Hanoi Hallyu Expo in 2022.

Kim and Ahn Hyo-seop were chosen as brand ambassadors for the Indonesian food and drink product Realfood in October 2022. To promote the brand, they worked with Indonesian actor Chicco Jerikho on a series of mini commercial episodes.

Philanthropy

Kim donated $10 million to the Hope Bridge Disaster Relief Association on March 8, 2022, to assist victims of the massive wildfire that began in Uljin, Gyeongbuk and has spread to Samcheok, Gangwon. Kim donated $10 million to Fruit of Love, Community Chest of Korea on March 31 to assist war refugees in Ukraine. Kim donated $20 million to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association on August 19 to assist those affected by the South Korean floods in 2022. Kim donated $10 million to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association on September 7 to help those affected by Typhoon Hinnamnor.

Kim donated $40 million to the Hope Bridge National Disaster Relief Association on February 10, 2023, to assist victims of the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake.

Influence and image

Kim was the lead singer for both I.O.I and Gugudan, and she is known for her sweet, powerful raspy voice as well as her emotional healing songs. Kim considers IU, Girls' Generation's Taeyeon and Ailee to be her singing role models, and she frequently uses their songs in her practise sessions. Kim is frequently referred to as the "Flower Way" icon in broadcasts and media following her famous speech to her mother, "I will only let you walk on the flower road from now on," during the first elimination round of Produce 101, where she won first place.
