He has received numerous honours, including a Saturn Award and nominations for an MTV Movie & TV Award, two People's Choice Awards, and two Teen Choice Awards, and in September 2022, he was appointed the matai title of Savae chief of his village Moata'a.

From 2013 to 2015, he starred as Kane Jenkins in the New Zealand primetime soap opera Shortland Street. Apa was cast in the lead role of Archie Andrews in the CW drama Riverdale in 2017. Apa has appeared in films such as A Dog's Purpose (2017), The Hate U Give (2018), and I Still Believe (2020). In 2021, he released his debut solo album, Clocks, an indie folk-rock album that garnered some attention on Spotify and TikTok.

Early years

Apa was born on June 17, 1997, at Auckland's Waitakere Hospital, the son of Tupa'i and Tessa Apa (née Callander). His father is Samoan and the matai (chief) of his Samoan village; his mother is European New Zealander. He is the nephew of former rugby union player and coach Michael Jones and has two older sisters. Before beginning his acting career, he attended high school at Auckland's King's College.

Career

Early work and success (2013–2017)

Apa played Kane Jenkins in the New Zealand prime-time soap opera Shortland Street from 2013 to 2015. After a four-month worldwide talent search, he was cast as Archie Andrews in the CW drama series Riverdale in 2016.

He starred as Ethan Montgomery in the 2017 comedy-drama film A Dog's Purpose, which was released on the same day Riverdale premiered on television.

Additional films and critical shifts (2018–2020)

His next film role was as a stand-in for Kian Lawley in the 2018 drama The Hate U Give. He played Griffin in the Netflix film The Last Summer, which premiered on May 3, 2019. He also played singer Jeremy Camp in the upcoming biographical romantic drama film I Still Believe, which will be released in March 2020.

Apa appeared in Adam Mason's critically acclaimed 2020 thriller Songbird, which was produced by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes. The film was accused of making a thrill plot out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Lionsgate Films announced in May 2021 that he would appear in the military drama West Pointer.

Music business ventures (2021–present)

In 2021, he self-released his debut album, Clocks, which delves into the folk rock and indie genres. It gained popularity on Spotify and TikTok.
Apa attended the San Diego Comic-Con with Riverdale co-star Camila Mendes.

Apa was in a minor car accident in Vancouver in September 2017, but escaped unharmed when the passenger side of his car collided with a light pole. The late-night crash was allegedly caused by him falling asleep behind the wheel after a long day of filming.

Apa has been in a relationship with French model Clara Berry since 2020. Their child is due to be born in September 2021.

Apa was raised in a Christian home and has declared himself to be a Christian. In April 2018, he publicly criticised Australian rugby player Israel Folau for claiming that it was God's plan to send gay people to hell, describing Folau's comments as "disappointing".

Moata'a rule

His native village Moata'a in New Zealand bestowed upon him the matai title of Savae in September 2022.
