Jo Jung-suk is a South Korean actor who was born on December 26, 1980. He began his career in theater, appearing in many musicals and plays, including Spring Awakening, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and the stage adaptation of The Harmonium in My Memory.
Jo made his film debut as a comedic supporting actor in the 2012 box office hit Architecture 101, which became his breakout role, after nearly a decade on the stage. The television series The King 2 Hearts (2012), You're the Best, Lee Soon-shin (2013), Oh My Ghost (2015), Don't Dare to Dream (2016), Hospital Playlist (2020), as well as the films The Face Reader (2013), My Love, My Bride (2014), My Annoying Brother (2016), Exit (2019).
Career
Jo Jung-suk had always desired to perform on stage. He was admitted to Seoul Institute of the Arts' Theater department on a student loan, but after his father died in 2000, Jo's widowed mother became completely reliant on him. Due to family circumstances, he was granted an exemption from military service, and he dropped out of school before graduating to begin earning money through musicals. In 2004, he made his professional acting debut in The Nutcracker.
Jo then became active and well-known in musical theatre, appearing in 25 musicals in his first nine years of career, including Organ in My Heart (musical adaptation of The Harmonium in My Memory), Janggeum the Great (musical adaptation of Jewel in the Palace), and Korean productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Grease, The Island, and Spring Awakening.
In 2011, he landed his first television role as an awkward but talented music student on the cable series What's Up. However, 2012 would be his breakthrough year, with roles in two high-profile projects. In his feature film debut, he played a supporting role in the box office smash Architecture 101. Jo's performance as the young hero's best friend Nab-ddeuk was filled with personality and comic timing, and he won Best New Actor at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, as well as nominations from the Grand Bell Awards and the Buil Film Awards. In his third onscreen role as earnest soldier Eun Shi-kyung in the drama series The King 2 Hearts, he was once again a scene stealer. Jo's versatility and screen presence in those projects boosted his mainstream popularity, resulting in nearly twenty offers for films and TV series, not to mention commercials.
He then starred in the big-screen comedy Almost Che, which was loosely based on a 1985 incident in which student activists forcibly occupied the US Cultural Center in Seoul and engaged in a standoff with police. Jo returned to television in his first onscreen leading role in the 2013 family drama You're the Best, Lee Soon-shin, after filming the Song Kang-ho-starred period drama The Face Reader (for which he later won Best Supporting Actor at the Grand Bell Awards).
In 2014, Jo appeared in two films: the period thriller The Fatal Encounter, in which he played an assassin targeting King Jeongjo, and the romantic comedy My Love, My Bride, a remake of the 1990 hit of the same name, in which he and Shin Min-ah played a newly married couple.
Oh My Ghost, a commercial and critical success in 2015, starred Jo as an arrogant star chef who falls for his kitchen assistant who has been possessed by a virgin ghost. He also starred in The Exclusive: Beat the Devil's Tattoo, in which he played a TV news reporter who gets a scoop, and Time Renegade, a time-traveling thriller.
Jo appeared in SBS's romantic comedy Don't Dare to Dream in 2016 as an announcer who falls for a weather announcer (played by Gong Hyo-jin). The series was a success, and Jo rose to prominence, becoming one of the industry's most in-demand actors. He then co-starred in the comedy-drama film My Annoying Brother with Exo members Park Shin-hye and Do Kyung-soo. The film debuted at the top of the box office and received positive reviews for Jo, who was praised for his comedic timing and chemistry with co-star Do.
Jo was cast in Woo Min-gangster ho's thriller The Drug King in 2017. In the same year, he made his television debut in MBC's fantasy comedy drama Two Cops.
In 2018, Jo was cast as an antagonist in the action thriller film Hit-and-Run Squad, as well as the disaster action film Exit.
Jo appeared in the historical drama Nokdu Flower in 2019.
Jo appeared as Lee Ik-jun, an assistant professor of general surgery, in the 2020 medical drama Hospital Playlist. He returned for Season 2 in 2021.
In 2022, Jo will host the 2022 Jo Jung-suk Show at Mastercard Hall in Blue Square, Seoul, for two days, beginning at 6 p.m. on September 3 and ending at 5 p.m. on September 4.
