Career
Ji Soo made his stage debut in 2009 and went on to star in several short films, including the lead role in the Korean-Filipino independent film Seoul Mates. He first rose to prominence in the high school drama Angry Mom (2015).
He has since appeared in the television series Cheer Up! (2015), Page Turner (2016), Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016), and the film One Way Trip (2016).
In 2017, he co-starred as a passionate rookie police officer in JTBC's fantasy romance comedy Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. He then appeared in the crime drama Bad Guys 2 on OCN.
Ji Soo appeared in JTBC's drama special Ping Pong Ball and Netflix's youth romance drama My First First Love in 2018.
Ji Soo signed a contract with KeyEast in 2020.
Ji Soo was cast as the male lead role in the Korean drama River Where the Moon Rises in 2021. The drama premiered on February 15, 2021, with actor Ji Soo playing the character On Dal. He appeared in the drama for six episodes until reported school bullying and assault allegations were made against him, at which point KBS replaced Ji Soo and he was removed from the show. The role of On Dal was recast by actor Na In Woo, who first appeared in the drama in episode nine.
Actor Ji Soo was announced to be enlisted for mandatory military service duties in October 2021; however, according to reports, Ji Soo received a summons for mandatory military service duties in December 2020. He was announced to carry out the remainder of his services in the assigned social worker department after completing four weeks of basic military training.
On July 6, 2021, Ji Soo's legal representative, law firm Shin & Kim, issued a new statement regarding the open-ended legal procedures of previously reported school bullying and assault allegations. The same representative stated in May 2021 that the actor has decided to take legal action against those who made false accusations and spread false rumors.
Many blatant lies were posted on the Internet in March 2021, including those accusing our client of sexual offense. The man who wrote a post accusing our client of sexually assaulting his wife in the past has come forward and apologized, but the rest of the accusatory posts have circulated without being verified. As a result, our client has decided to take legal action against those who spread false information in order to expose the truth.
We were recently able to locate one of the authors of false accusatory posts thanks to a search and seizure of IP addresses and other information. The man turned out to be a newly enlisted soldier. He admitted in his post that everything he said was false. He then sincerely apologized to our client in a handwritten letter, pleading for forgiveness because his mother is battling cancer.
After considering both his and the perpetrator's circumstances, our client decided to drop the aforementioned man from the lawsuit. Most publishers, however, have gone dark after deleting their false accusatory posts. We will take strong legal action against these individuals.
Meanwhile, the posts accusing him of bullying at school were mostly false. Our client has filed a libel suit against them. We are writing to inform you that the court has issued a search warrant and that the investigation into the case is ongoing."
Ji Soo's agency KeyEast announced on May 27, 2021, that his exclusive contract with the agency had been terminated due to the controversy.
Private life
On September 13, 2016, Ji Soo underwent surgery for acute osteomyelitis (inflammation of bone or bone marrow caused by infection). He returned to filming Fantastic on September 27 and was officially discharged from the hospital on October 1.
He is a member of the celebrity group BYH48, which includes EXO's Suho, Ryu Jun-yeol, Byun Yo-han, Lee Dong-hwi, and others. The name was created by their fans, with BYH referring to the group's leader, Byun Yo-han, and 48 being a parody of the Japanese idol group AKB48. Ji Soo is also close to fellow actor Nam Joo-hyuk.
Controversy
Ji Soo was accused of being a bully during his school years in a statement posted on an online forum by an anonymous person on March 2, 2021. His agency, KeyEast, issued a statement the next day saying, "[they] are looking into this incident seriously and will do [their] utmost to verify the facts."
On March 4, 2021, Ji Soo posted a handwritten apology to his Instagram account in response to a series of similar accusations. ", he said "I sincerely apologize to those who have been harmed by me. I have no room for making excuses for my past actions. They could not be forgiven.
When I first started acting, I was able to get this far because I covered up my past, and as a result, I received undue love and attention from the public.
But I always felt guilty in one part of my heart, and an irreversible regret haunted me anxiously. My dark past had always weighed heavily on me.
I now beg forgiveness from those who were undoubtedly deeply hurt by my actions for a long time, and I will reflect on and repent of my past unforgivable actions.
I'm miserable and guilty for causing so much harm to all of my fellow drama cast and crew members, the broadcasting station, and everyone else involved in the production due to my own personal mistakes. I sincerely hope that the drama will not suffer any further setbacks.
On my knees once more, I beg forgiveness for all those who have been harmed by me."
Ji Soo was later reported to be replaced in the television series River Where the Moon Rises by actor Na In-woo. Ji Soo's activities will be halted prior to his military enlistment in October 2021, according to a statement issued by KeyEast.
