Dylan Christopher Minnette (born December 29, 1996) is an actor, musician, and singer from the United States. He is best known for his role in the Netflix drama series 13 Reasons Why as Clay Jensen. He has appeared in a number of television shows, including Lost, Awake, Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, Supernatural, Prison Break, Scandal, and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. In addition, he is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the American alternative rock band Wallows.
Minnette has appeared in the horror films Let Me In (2010), Prisoners (2013), Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (2014), Goosebumps (2015), and Don't Breathe (2016), The Open House (2018), and Scream (2022).
Minnette grew up in Evansville, Indiana, as the only child of Robyn and Craig Minnette. The family relocated to Champaign, Illinois, for five years before relocating to Los Angeles, California, so he could pursue a career in acting.
Career sActing
Minnette's first appearance on Drake & Josh was in a single episode. He later appeared as an unnamed character in Fred Claus, as Todd Lyons in The Clique, and as Noah Framm in Snow Buddies in the NBC original film The Year Without a Santa Claus. Minnette's notable television roles include the young version of Michael Scofield on Prison Break and Clay Norman on Saving Grace. In Let Me In, released in October 2010, he played a bully named Kenny.
He also appeared as Jerry Grant Jr., the president of the United States, on ABC's Scandal. Minnette has also appeared in a number of commercials and four episodes of Lost as Jack's son in the alternate timeline. Minnette appeared in the video for Shinedown's "The Crow & the Butterfly."
In 2014, Minnette starred in the comedy film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day as Anthony Cooper, the Cooper children's first child and the titular character's elder brother. The film was based on the 1972 children's book of the same name by Judith Viorst. Minnette co-starred in Goosebumps, a film based on R. L. Stine's children's horror book series of the same name, the following year. The film was a commercial success and received generally positive critical reviews, grossing more than $158 million.
Minnette appeared in the horror film Don't Breathe, directed by Fede lvarez, in 2016. Don't Breathe was a sleeper hit that received critical acclaim and grossed over $156 million.
Minnette began starring as Clay Jensen in the Netflix teen drama television series 13 Reasons Why, an adaptation of the 2007 novel of the same name, in 2017. The Hollywood Reporter praised his performance, writing, "Minnette is so dedicated to playing despondent that the relief and pleasure in brief scenes of flirty banter between Hannah and Clay is palpable." He appeared on the show for four seasons before it ended in 2020. In addition, he appeared in the Netflix film The Open House, which debuted in January 2018.
Minnette was cast as Wes Hicks in the fifth Scream film, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, in September 2020. The movie came out on January 14, 2022.
Music
Minnette is the singer and rhythm guitarist for Wallows, which also includes Cole Preston (drums) and Braeden Lemasters (singer, guitar). Prior to 2017, they were known as the Feaver, then the Narwhals. They performed at Summer Meltdown, an autism awareness concert in 2010, and won a battle of the bands contest sponsored by 98.7 FM the same year. They appeared at the 2011 Vans Warped Tour and have since performed at numerous Los Angeles venues such as the Roxy Theatre and Whisky a Go Go. Their song "Bleeding Man" was featured in the season 2 promo for R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour.
They released four singles on Apple Music and Spotify in 2017: "Pleaser," "Sun Tan," "Uncomfortable," and "Pulling Leaves Off Trees." They released their debut EP Spring in 2018, which included the singles "Pictures of Girls" and "These Days." On May 8, 2018, they performed "Pictures of Girls" on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Nothing Happens, their debut album, was released in March 2019. They released their second EP Remote in 2020, which included the singles "Nobody Gets Me (Like You)" and "Virtual Aerobics."
Minnette and Wallows performed at Coachella 2022, which was headlined by Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and The Weeknd x Swedish House Mafia.
