Daniel Diemer (born 21 June 1996) is a Canadian actor best known for his role as Paul Munsky in Alice Wu's Netflix film The Half of It. Prior to starring in the film, he appeared in The Man in the High Castle and Sacred Lies in smaller roles.
Early years
Daniel Diemer was born in the British Columbia town of Brentwood Bay. Greg Diemer, his father, is a tennis coach and businessman. Aaron Diemer is his younger brother. He worked eight different part-time jobs as a kid, from coaching ping pong to picking blueberries to low-level accounting. He wrote and published a children's book when he was 12 years old.
He began playing soccer at the age of five and aspired to be an athlete, eventually playing internationally at the age of twelve. He quit because he "grew up like a maniac and lost the speed." He turned to tennis because he didn't want to give up sports. He played at the provincial level and planned to pursue a university scholarship before suffering a back injury that forced him to abandon his athletic career entirely. He then enrolled in pre-med at Camosun College with a 4.0 GPA. However, after a semester, he dropped out to pursue creative work, beginning with modeling for an art class. In 2016, he graduated from the Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Diemer lived alone in a makeshift building for construction workers prior to his on-screen debut. In his spare time, he would sleep on the couch, watch TV, and attend acting masterclasses.
Career
Early in one's career (2014–2018)
In 2014, Diemer made his on-screen debut in a Sidney York music video on the advice of a friend. Following that, he enrolled in the Acting for Film and Theater program at the Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts. He auditioned numerous times but received no role offers for the first two years. He was cast in the 2016 film Bloody Blacksmith and went on to appear in four short films between 2017 and 2018.
Breakthrough (2018–2019) (2018–2019)
Diemer appeared in four seasons of the TV series Sacred Lies in 2018. Following that, he appeared in Emma Fielding: More Bitter Than Death and Family Pictures. His performance in Sacred Lies helped him gain recognition and a role in Amazon Prime's hit historical drama The Man in the High Castle.
The Other Half (2020)
Diemer landed the lead role in Alice Wu's coming-of-age drama The Half of It, which will be distributed by Netflix and premiere on May 1, 2020. He portrayed Paul Munsky, a clumsy football player who seeks the assistance of a smart Asian introvert in order to woo a girl they both want by writing letters to her. Before discovering Diemer, Alice Wu held at least 600 casting auditions. Wu explained why she chose Diemer: "Daniel exudes authenticity." He's attractive, but not in the 'Hollywood pretty boy' way. I needed that rare quality of his to make this film work; with Daniel, the audience can ride along and feel as if they are watching real people, not actors, living their lives in small town rural America. He feels like 'one of us,' despite the fact that he is 6'4" and stunning." Diemer stated that his athletic background aided him in the film.
The film received positive reviews and was awarded Best Narrative Feature at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival.
Diemer is currently dating Brazilian-born actress Larissa Dias.
