Caleb Reginald McLaughlin (born October 13, 2001) is an actor from the United States. He rose to prominence as Lucas Sinclair in the Netflix series Stranger Things (2016–present). McLaughlin began his career on Broadway as Young Simba in the musical The Lion King, followed by minor television roles. Following Stranger Things, he starred in High Flying Bird (2019) and Concrete Cowboy (2020), his first starring feature film roles. His other credits include the 2017 miniseries The New Edition Story and various television voice acting roles.

Early years

Caleb Reginald McLaughlin was born in Carmel, New York on October 13, 2001. His parents are April and Corey McLaughlin. He attended Kent Primary School before moving on to George Fischer Middle School for a year. He spent a year studying dance at Happy Feet Dance School in Carmel, New York, and then a year at Seven Star School of Performing Arts in Brewster Hill, New York. He then attended The Harlem School of the Arts, where he studied under Aubrey Lynch, a former Lion King producer.


McLaughlin's first acting role was as a child in the opera Lost in the Stars at the Glimmerglass Opera House in Cooperstown, New York. His Broadway debut was as Young Simba in the musical The Lion King (2012–14). He later appeared in television shows such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Unforgettable, Forever, What Would You Do?, and Shades of Blue as a guest star. McLaughlin's breakthrough role came in 2016 when he played Lucas Sinclair in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things (2016–present). He was nominated for a BET YoungStars Award in 2017, and he won Outstanding Performance by a Youth at the NAACP Image Awards in 2018. McLaughlin made his feature film debut in Concrete Cowboy in 2020, co-starring with Idris Elba and Jharrel Jerome to positive reviews. McLaughlin was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 Class of 2021 list in the field of Hollywood and Entertainment in December 2020.


McLaughlin is the driving force behind the social media campaigns #EmbraceYourFace and #BeYourBiggestFan, which promote positive body image, positivity, and self-esteem. According to McLaughlin: "It is beneficial to feel good about yourself. It always starts with you before moving on to anyone else... You must learn to love and appreciate yourself, and you must make the time to do so." McLaughlin also encouraged people to vote in the 2020 US presidential election by posting a video on his official Instagram account that included links to the non-profit organisation
