Bae Doona Wiki, Age, Biography, Height, Boyfriend, Family, Images, And More

Bae Doona (Korean: Doona Bae; born October 11, 1979) is a South Korean actress and photographer. Outside of Korea, she became well-known for her roles as a political activist in Park Chan-Sympathy wook's for Mr. Vengeance (2002), archer Park Nam-joo in Bong Joon-The ho's Host (2006), and the doll in Hirokazu Kore-Air eda's Doll (2009). She has acted in the Wachowski brothers' films Cloud Atlas (2012) and Jupiter Ascending (2015), as well as their Netflix television series Sense8 (2015–2018). She is best known for her Korean-speaking roles as the lead female character in the Netflix period zombie thriller Kingdom (2019-present), as well as the crime thriller Stranger (2017-2020) and sci-fi The Silent Sea.

Early years

Bae Doona was born in the South Korean city of Seoul. As a child, she would accompany her mother, stage actress Kim Hwa-young, to theatres and rehearsal halls, learning lines of dialogue as she went. This did not initially lead her to acting, as she stated: "People may believe that I became an actress because my mother is a theatre actress. However, those experiences most likely had the opposite effect on me. On the contrary, because I saw so many great actors working with my mother, I assumed this was a job only for people with exceptional talent."

1998-2005: Beginnings of a Career

In 1998, she was a Konkuk University student when she was scouted by a modelling agency in Seoul. This led to her modelling for COOLDOG's catalogue, among other things. Before finishing her studies at university, she switched to acting in 1999, making her debut in the TV drama School. She played the ghost in The Ring Virus, a Korean remake of the Japanese horror film Ring, later that year.

Doona was cast in the film Barking Dogs Never Bite by director Bong Joon-ho in 2000 because she was willing to perform the role without makeup, which other South Korean actresses refused to do. She later described this role as "the film that made me decide to become an actress — a good actress — and that film thereby changed my whole life." Kim So-young praised veteran South Korean actress Yoon Jeong-hee in her documentary Women's History Trilogy (2000-2004). In the same documentary, Bae stated that her most memorable scene in Barking Dogs Never Bite was being chased by the homeless man throughout the apartment. That same year, she gave a risque performance in Plum Blossom (albeit with a body double for the more intense scenes) and began getting more television work.

This was followed by Jeong Jae-2001 eun's film Take Care of My Cat and Park Chan-2002 wook's film Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.

Tube and Spring Bears Love both underperformed at the box office in 2003. She decided to take a break from film work after completing principal photography on Spring Bears Love, stating, "I've never gone a day without doing something. I was almost always shooting the next film the moment a film was shown to the media [...] My first cycle was officially over, I reasoned. I wanted to make a fresh start while I rested."

During her break from film, she took up photography, with examples on her official blog and in her published photo-essay books. She also continued to appear on television, appearing in Country Princess and Rosemary. In 2004, Bae appeared on stage in a production of Sunday Seoul (not to be confused with the South Korean film of the same name), a play written by Park Chan-wook.

In the 2005 Japanese film Linda, she played an exchange student who joins a band. Linda Linda later portrayed a divorced woman in the experimental omnibus television series Beating Heart.

2006–present: Breakthrough achievement

She reunited with Bong Joon-ho in The Host, which went on to become the highest-grossing film in South Korean box office history. She spent months practising archery for her role. She then made a comeback on television with the shows Someday and How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor.

After receiving critical acclaim for Air Doll, a 2009 film by Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda about an inflatable doll who develops consciousness and falls in love, Bae starred in two TV series in 2010: Master of Study and Gloria.

As One, her 2012 sports film, was based on the true story of the 1991 world table tennis championship in Chiba, Japan, in which North Korean player Ri Bun-hui and South Korean player Hyun Jung-hwa defeated the Chinese team. Hyun herself trained Bae and co-star Ha Ji-won, and Bae learned to play left-handed like Ri. She then appeared briefly in the science fiction film Doomsday Book.

In Cloud Atlas, Bae made her English-language Hollywood debut as Sonmi451, a clone in a dystopian Korea. She also played Tilda Ewing, the wife of an abolitionist in pre-Civil War America, and a Mexican woman who encounters an assassin. The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer co-directed the US$100 million adaptation of David Mitchell's novel, which premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival to mixed reviews, though critics praised Bae's performance. She said of the Wachowskis in a 2019 interview, "They have earned my respect and trust in the same way that my mother has. I couldn't believe it when they contacted me about taking part in Cloud Atlas. We first met on Skype, and I sent them a demo tape. Despite my lack of English proficiency, they assigned me an important role. I believe we developed an understanding at the time, which prompted me to follow them on Sense8. They have provided me with opportunities that not all actors are afforded. Most importantly, their enthusiasm for their work has made our collaboration so enjoyable. They inspired me to strive for more and helped me overcome my fears and limitations."

Back in Korea, Bae starred in July Jung's 2014 film A Girl at My Door, which was produced by Lee Chang-dong. Bae, who plays a small-town cop who tries to save a mysterious young girl she suspects is a victim of domestic violence, said she was so taken with the story and emotionally demanding role that she decided to star in the film for free three hours after reading the script. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, and Bae went on to win Best Actress at the Asian Film Awards.

She reunited with the Wachowskis in 2015 for their space opera Jupiter Ascending, in which she played a minor supporting role as a bounty hunter. Sense8, an American science fiction series created by the Wachowskis and co-written by J. Michael Straczynski, followed. Sense8, a Netflix original series about eight strangers from various cultures and parts of the world who share a violent psychic vision and find themselves telepathically connected, premiered in 2015.

The following year, Bae appeared in a 90-minute web film directed by her older brother, commercial director Bae Doo-han. Red Carpet Dream is a biopic about Bae's childhood dream of becoming an actress and her 20-year acting career. The film was commissioned for the 20th anniversary of the Busan International Film Festival and was sponsored by MAC Cosmetics. It was shown at the festival as well as on Facebook and cable channel CGV.

Bae returned to the big screen in the survival drama The Tunnel, co-starring with Ha Jung-woo. She then collaborated on the short film Chang-Letter ok's with Japanese director Shunji Iwai and actor Kim Joo-hyuk.

In 2017, Bae returned to Korean television screens as Lieutenant Han Yeo-jin, a passionate yet sympathetic police officer who contrasts with Cho Seung-character woo's Prosecutor Hwang Si-mok. The series was a smash hit, receiving rave reviews for its tight plot, gripping sequences, and strong performances. The show was renewed for a second season in 2020, and her character was promoted to Senior Inspector.

Bae was one of 14 Korean film industry professionals invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in June 2018. (AMPAS). She starred in the crime thriller The Drug King the same year. She also appeared in both seasons of Netflix's 2019 period zombie series Kingdom, as well as the romance drama Matrimonial Chaos, a remake of the Japanese television series of the same name.

In 2019, Bae co-starred in the French-language romcom #JeSuisLa alongside Alain Chabat. She was cast in the Netflix sci-fi thriller The Silent Sea, which will premiere in 2021, alongside Gong Yoo, Lee Moo-saeng, and Kim Sun-young. In 2022, she appeared in two films: Jung Ju-Next ri's Sohee and Hirokazu Kore-Broker. eda's

Bae signed with Goodman Story Entertainment on March 3, 2023.
