Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield (born Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield on April 1, 1997) is an English actor. He has three British Independent Film Awards, two Critics' Choice Awards, two Saturn Awards, and three Young Artist Awards nominations.
Butterfield began his career as a child actor and rose to prominence as the lead in the historical drama film The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008). During the 2010s, he continued to be a box office draw, appearing in the adventure drama Hugo (2011), the war science fiction film Ender's Game (2013), the drama X+Y (2014), and the fantasy Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016). Butterfield began playing the lead in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education in 2019.
Early years
Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield was born on April 1, 1997, in Islington, London, England, to psychologist Jacqueline Farr and advertising copywriter Sam Butterfield. He attended Stoke Newington School.
Career
Butterfield began acting at the Young Actors Theatre Islington when he was seven years old. Later, he appeared in the 2006 television drama After Thomas and the 2007 film Son of Rambow in minor roles.
In 2008, he appeared as Donny in the television series Ashes to Ashes. Butterfield played the lead role in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas the same year, at the age of ten. Butterfield was discovered early in the audition process, according to director Mark Herman. He was on the first audition tape he got and the third person he met in person. Herman pondered Butterfield's performance was outstanding, but only decided to cast him after auditioning hundreds of other boys, "so no stone was left unturned". Herman and producer David Heyman were looking for someone to play the main character's innocence, so they asked each of the children about the Holocaust. Butterfield's knowledge was limited, and he purposefully kept it that way throughout filming to help him convey his character's innocence. The film's final scenes were shot near the end of production to prepare both him and Jack Scanlon for the dramatic ending.
Butterfield beat out hundreds of other boys for the role, and he also passed the auditions for a role in Mr. Nobody, which he auditioned for at the same time. He chose not to pursue the latter position. He played Mordred in the Merlin episode "The Beginning of the End" in 2008, and he reprised the role in a number of subsequent episodes. He had a small role in The Wolfman in 2010. He played Norman Green in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang Theory (2010). Both the film and his performance received favourable reviews.
At the age of 13, Butterfield starred in Martin Scorsese's Hugo, a film based on the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Hugo was released on November 23, 2011, to critical acclaim. In the film adaptation of Orson Scott Card's novel Ender's Game, Butterfield played Andrew "Ender" Wiggin. In 2013, the film was released.
Following the completion of Ender's Game, Butterfield was cast as Nathan Ellis, a mathematical savant on the autism spectrum chosen to compete in an internationally renowned mathematics competition, in the British drama X+Y. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, 2014. Butterfield's performance was widely praised, and he was nominated for a BIFA Award for Best Actor.
Butterfield appeared in a film adaptation of Ten Thousand Saints in 2015. He played Jacob Portman in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in 2016. In 2017, he played Gardner Elliot in The Space Between Us and Sebastian in The House of Tomorrow. Butterfield was cast as Otis Milburn in the Netflix comedy-drama series Sex Education in 2018. The series premiered to critical acclaim on January 11, 2019. The second season debuted on January 17, 2020, and the third on September 17, 2021.
Other business ventures
Butterfield enjoys making and producing music, and released a mashup of the songs "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus and "Making Plans for Nigel" by XTC. He and his brother are members of the Mambo Fresh music group. Butterfield co-created Racing Blind, a turn-based video game for iPad, with his father and brother in late 2012. On April 7, 2013, the game was released to the App Store.
Butterfield enjoys competitive Nintendo gaming. He took part in the Nintendo World Championships in 2017, but was eliminated early in the invitational. He is an enthusiastic player of competitive Super Smash Bros. and has signed with esports team Panda Global under the tag "Stimpy". He made his first appearance with the organisation at Genesis 6. Team Liquid signed him in October 2020.
Butterfield has taught an annual acting masterclass at The Reel Scene acting school in London since 2017. The three-day "Asa Butterfield Masterclass" course focuses on improvisation techniques, with students working on scenes from Butterfield's films that are then filmed on the final day. Students appeared as extras in the 2018 film Greed, in which Butterfield starred.
