Paul Ahn (born April 17, 1995) is a Canadian actor and singer based in South Korea. He rose to prominence in the Korean dramas Still 17 (2018), Abyss (2019), Dr. Romantic 2 (2020), Lovers of the Red Sky (2021), and Business Proposal (2022). (2022).
Ahn was born as the third of four siblings on April 17, 1995 in Seoul, South Korea. His family moved to Toronto, Canada, when he was seven years old. When Ahn was 17, he returned to South Korea, while his family remained in Canada. He went on to graduate from Kookmin University's Department of International Business.
Career
After returning to South Korea, Ahn was spotted by JYP Entertainment and hired as a trainee. He was given the chance to make his debut as a member of the K-pop boy band Got7. However, he ultimately declined the offer to pursue other opportunities.
2015-2016: One O One debut, acting debut, and career beginnings
Starhaus Entertainment debuted the project group One O One on October 1, 2015, with the release of their debut single "Love You." Ahn was joined in the group by fellow Starhaus actors Kwak Si-yang, Song Won-seok, and Kwon Do-kyun. However, the group is believed to have disbanded due to inactivity since January 2019.
Ahn made his acting debut in Splash Splash Love, an MBC drama. He later joined the cast of the music variety show Always Cantare. In 2016, he appeared in One More Happy Ending, Happy Home, and Entertainer as a supporting actor.
Transition to leadership roles from 2017 to the present
In 2021, Ahn Hyo-seop, who played Ha Ram in Lovers of the Red Sky, was interviewed for Viu.
His popularity skyrocketed following his first lead roles in Queen of the Ring and My Father is Strange in 2017. Following that, he moved on to lead roles.
In 2018, Ahn starred in Still 17, where she played Yoo Chan, the captain of the high school rowing club. At the 2018 SBS Drama Awards, he won Best New Actor and was nominated for "Character of the Year" alongside Jo Hyun-sik and Lee Do-hyun for his performance. Later that same year, Ahn appeared in the YouTube Red drama Top Management.
In 2019, Ahn co-starred with Park Bo-young in the romantic comedy fantasy crime drama Abyss, in which he played a rich but unattractive heir to a cosmetics empire who is revived by a mysterious orb after his death. Ahn co-hosted the 4th Asia Artist Awards with Leeteuk, Lim Ji-yeon, and Nancy in late 2019.
In 2020, Ahn appeared in the second season of the hit medical drama Dr. Romantic as general surgeon Seo Woo-jin, opposite Lee Sung-kyung. The show was a success, with both Ahn and Lee keeping their promise to sing for the fans as the ratings reached the double digits. At the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards, his performance in the drama earned him the Best New Actor Award in Television. At the 2020 SBS Drama Awards, he also received the Excellence Award for Actor in a Miniseries Action/Genre Drama.
In 2021, Ahn starred in the historical-fantasy drama Lovers of the Red Sky adapted from the novel written by Jung Eun-gwol, playing the role of Ha Ram, a blind astrologer who reads the stars, while living a disguised life as Ilwolseong - chief of an information organisation and whose body is possessed by Ma Wang (the Demon King) since childhood, alongside Kim Yoo-jung as Hong Cheon-gi, a female painter. He received the Excellence Award, Actor in a Miniseries Genre/Fantasy Drama, and the Best Couple Award with Kim Yoo-jung at the 2021 SBS Drama Awards for his portrayal of multiple roles as Ha Ram, Ilwolseong, and Ma Wang.
In 2022, Ahn co-starred in the SBS-broadcast and Netflix-distributed romantic comedy drama Business Proposal, which was adapted from the webtoon of the same name. He portrayed Kang Tae-mu, a third generation chaebol CEO. He was cast in the Netflix series A Time Called You, a South Korean adaptation of the Taiwanese drama Someday Or One Day, in March 2022. In May 2022, Ahn signed with The Present Co., the agency he co-founded with a manager who had previously worked with him.
Philanthropy
On August 16, 2022, Ahn donated $50 million to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association to assist those affected by the 2022 South Korean floods.
