Aditya Roy Kapur (born November 16, 1985) is an Indian actor who primarily works in Hindi films. In 2009, he made his acting debut in the drama film London Dreams. In 2013, Kapur had his first commercial success with the musical romance Aashiqui 2. In the same year, he starred in the romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, for which he received an IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor as well as a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
After a string of critical and commercial failures, including Daawat-e-Ishq (2014), Fitoor (2016), Ok Jaanu (2017), and Kalank (2019), Kapur starred in the black comedy Ludo (2020) and the thriller series The Night Manager (2023).
Early years
Kapur was born on November 16, 1985, in Mumbai, to a Punjabi Hindu father, Kumud Roy Kapur, and a Jewish mother, Salome Aaron. Raghupat Roy Kapur, his grandfather, was a film producer in the early 1940s. Kapur is the youngest of three siblings; his eldest brother, Siddharth Roy Kapur, is the CEO of UTV Motion Pictures and is married to actress Vidya Balan. His second elder brother, Kunaal Roy Kapur, is also an actor.
Sam and Ruby Aaron, his maternal grandparents, were qualified dance teachers who introduced the Sama dance to India. He received his education from G. All of his siblings attended D. Somani Memorial School in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, where his mother directed school plays.
In Class XI, Kapur enrolled at St. Xavier's but failed. To avoid losing a year, he had to enroll at St. Andrew's College. He then graduated from St. Xavier's College, which is affiliated with the University of Mumbai. He wanted to be a cricketer during his school years, but he dropped out of cricket coaching classes after sixth grade.
Career
preliminary work (2004–2012)
Kapur began his career as a VJ on the music channel Channel V India, where his "unique style of hosting" was praised. He appeared in the show Pakao and hosted the popular show India's Hottest with VJ Bruna Abdullah until 2008.
Kapur made his Hindi film debut in the 2009 musical drama London Dreams, alongside Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Asin Thottumkal. His string of supporting roles continued in 2010 with the Akshay Kumar-starrer Action Replayy and the Hrithik Roshan-starrer Guzaarish. However, none of these films did well at the box office, but they did make Kapur a well-known actor.
Breakthroughs and career changes (2013–2019)
Kapur made his breakthrough as Rahul Jaykar in the romantic musical Aashiqui 2, co-starring Shraddha Kapoor, in 2013. Aashiqui 2, which premiered on April 26, 2013, was a commercial success at the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2013, earning 1.45 billion (US$18 million) in its first four weeks. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama praised his performance, writing, "...Aditya Roy Kapur's depiction of the intense character is outstanding... [which] clearly demonstrates his potency as an artist of caliber and competence." Hindustan Times critic Anupama Chopra noted that Kapur "gives Rahul's angst a certain charm... He is earnest and broken."
In 2014, he co-starred with Parineeti Chopra in the romantic comedy film Daawat-e-Ishq as Tariq Haider. The film received mixed reviews from critics and was a financial failure. In 2016, Kapur co-starred with Katrina Kaif and Tabu in the romantic drama film Fitoor, based on Charles Dickens' 1861 novel Great Expectations. He also appeared in the films Dear Zindagi and Welcome To New York as a cameo. In 2016, he was a part of the Dream Team Bollywood celebrity music tour, performing in San Jose, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York alongside Karan Johar, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Katrina Kaif, Parineeti Chopra, Alia Bhatt, and Badshah.
In 2017, Kapur starred as Aditya Gunjal in the romantic drama film Ok Jaanu alongside Shraddha Kapoor which received mixed reviews from critics Bollywood Hungama stating that it is "a decent love story which works only in parts mainly because of the chemistry between Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor." In 2019, he starred as Dev Chaudhry in the romantic drama film Kalank alongside Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sonakshi Sinha. When it was released, the film received mixed reviews, with criticism directed at its direction, storyline, and length, but praise for its music, visuals, and ensemble cast performances. Nonetheless, it was a box office failure.
2020–present
In 2019, Kapur co-starred with Disha Patani in the romantic action thriller Malang as Adavit Thakur. Critics were impressed with Kapur's performance. The actor's physical transformation adds weight to all the kicks and punches he pulls in the film, according to Harshada Rege of The Times of India.
In 2020, he starred as Vishal Agnihotri in the road film Sadak 2 alongside Sanjay Dutt and Alia Bhatt, which was released on the Disney+ Hotstar streaming platform. The film was universally panned by critics, with criticism for its performance, script, dialogues, and use of clichés. Anupama Chopra of Film Companion wrote, "The storytelling, performances, dialogue, cinematography, songs, background music - all seem to
Rashtra Kavach Om, starring Kapur and Sanjana Sanghi, was released theatrically in 2022 and received a negative response from critics due to the storyline, eventually becoming a box office bomb. Nairita Mukherjee of India Today wrote, "Aditya Roy Kapur's glistening biceps, though impressive, may not be strong enough to hold the weight of this strictly average actioner."
In 2023, Kapur starred in The Night Manager, a remake of the British television series of the same name, replacing Tom Hiddleston. According to NDTV's Saibal Chatterjee, "Kapur's performance isn't a patch on Hiddleston's." However, the adaptation enables him to be himself. That works in his favor." He will next be seen in the crime thriller Gumraah, a Hindi remake of the 2019 Tamil film Thadam, alongside Mrunal Thakur.

Kapur was ranked 28th in the Times of India's Most Desirable Men list in 2018, 11th in 2019, and 3rd in 2020.
