Zhou Xuan (Chinese: ; pinyin: Zhu Xuán; Wade-Giles: Chou1 Hsüan2; born Su Pu (traditional Chinese: ; simplified Chinese: ; pinyin: S p; Wade-Giles: Su1 Pu2); August 1, 1920 – September 22, 1957), was an iconic Chinese singer and film actress. By the 1940s, she had established herself as one of China's Seven Great Singing Stars. She was the most well-known of the seven, dubbed the "Golden Voice," and had a parallel film career until 1954. Throughout her career, she recorded over 200 songs and featured in over 40 films.

Zhou was born Su Pu (), but she was taken away from her natural parents at a young age and raised by adoptive parents. She spent her entire life looking for her biological parents, but her paternity was never determined until after she died.

According to later family investigation, at the age of three, a relative who was an opium addict transported her to another city and sold her to the Wang family, who christened her Wang Xiaohong. She was then adopted by the Zhou family, and her name was changed to Zhou Xiaohong.

At the age of 13, she adopted the stage name Zhou Xuan, which means "beautiful jade" in Chinese.

Zhou began his performing career in 1932 as a member of Li Jinhui's Bright Moon Song and Dance Troupe. She earned second place in a singing competition in Shanghai when she was 12 years old, earning her the nickname "Golden Voice" () for her smooth high-pitched songs.

Zhou began her cinema career in 1935 and rose to fame in 1937 when director Yuan Muzhi cast her as one of the protagonists in Street Angel as a singing girl. Up until her death, Zhou was the most famous and most popular singer in the phonograph era, performing numerous memorable themes from her own films.

Between 1946 and 1950, she frequently visited Hong Kong to work on films such as "All-Consuming Love," "Hua wai liu ying," "Sorrows of the Forbidden City," and "Rainbow Song." Zhou returned to Shanghai after establishing "Shanghai Nights" () in 1949. Due to repeated breakdowns, she spent the following few years in and out of mental hospitals. Zhou's life was chaotic and sad over the years, marked by failed marriages, illegitimate offspring, and suicide attempts. Yan Hua (, 1912-1992), Zhou's first spouse, composed and occasionally performed songs alongside her.

Despite appearing in 43 films, her most well-known appearance was in the 1937 film Street Angel. This included two theme songs, "Four Seasons Song" () and "The Wandering Songstress," both of which were popular for a long time. "When Will You Return?", "Shanghai Nights" (title song from the film of the same name), "Yellow Leaves Dancing in the Autumn Wind" (), "Eternal Smile" (), "Hundred Flower Song" (), "Advice" (), "Where Can the Soul Mate be Found" (), and "Picking Betel Nuts" () are some of Zhou Xuan's other well-known songs.

Death

She died at a mental institution in Shanghai in 1957, at the age of 37. Encephalitis following a nervous breakdown could be a cause of death. According to Zhou's diary, she had cerebritis.

Zhou Xuan was survived by two kids from different fathers, Zhou Min and Zhou Wei. Zhou Min was popularly assumed to be the son of Zhu Huaide, a businessman who departed for Shanghai in 1950 after Zhou Xuan entrusted him with her savings and never returned; Zhou Min was born the same year. Her younger son, Zhou Wei, was the son of the art designer Tang Di (), according to her elder son Zhou Min's biography, but Zhou Min's biological father was not discovered.

Zhou Wei currently resides in Toronto, where he performs on occasion in the TTC subways and is involved in a variety of musical ventures, including teaching. He plays the flautist. He has two daughters, both of whom are musicians. Zhou Xiaoxuan, the oldest of the two, is a Concordia University-trained classical pianist who now lives in Beijing. Amanda Zhou, the youngest, is pursuing a similar career as an actress and has already appeared in a few shows and films.

Cultural heirlooms

Zhou Xuan's songs are still included in several Golden Oldies anthologies of Mandarin popular music.

Zhou Xuan's surviving family members have produced two bios. Zhou Wei and his wife Chang Jing () wrote the book My Mother Zhou Xuan (), while Zhou Min wrote the later book Zhou Xuan Diary ().

Television

TVB's Song Bird (1989) featured an interpretation of Zhou Xuan's life, starring Adia Chan as Zhou Xuan and Leon Lai as her lover. Xuan's songs were rewritten in Cantonese and sung by Chan in this series. She sang duets with Lai on the show while signed to Crown Records (). On the soundtrack CD, Deric Wan took over Lai's vocals.

The Chinese serial Zhou Xuan (), starring Cecilia Cheung, is another adaption based on Zhou Wei's biography. Zhou Wei criticized this version of the story of being a misleading representation of Zhou Xuan and detrimental to the Zhou family's image.
