Zhang Tian'ai (Chinese: ; born 28 October 1988), also known as Crystal Zhang in English, is a Chinese actress and model. Her breakthrough role was in the 2015 hit web-drama Go Princess Go.
Childhood and education
Zhang Tian'ai was born in Harbin, Heilongjiang on October 28, 1988. Zhang studied costume design in high school in Japan. She subsequently enrolled at the Beijing Film Academy.
Career 2008–2014: Beginnings and growing recognition
Zhang was invited to star in South Korean director Woody Han's 2008 short film Cherry Blossom alongside Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun. She then went on to appear in minor supporting roles while working as an advertisement model. Zhang made her official acting debut in the 2013 drama The Second Life of My Husband.
Zhang rose to prominence in 2014, when she co-starred in the spy drama The Legendary Sniper with Sun Honglei. Her performance earned her the Best Supporting Actress award at China's 2nd Hengdian Film and TV Festival.
2015–present: Breakthrough and leadership roles
Zhang appeared in the historical romance web drama Go Princess Go in 2015. The low-budget series became an unexpected commercial success, propelling Zhang to stardom. Zhang's fame led to her being cast in larger projects.
Zhang co-starred in the 2016 romance film I Belonged to You with Deng Chao. The film was a box office success, grossing more than 800 million yuan ($118 million).
In 2017, she appeared in the comedy film Father and Son alongside Da Peng and Fan Wei, as well as the fantasy adventure film Legend of the Naga Pearls alongside Darren Wang. She also appeared as Soong Mei-ling in the war film The Founding of an Army, as well as in Chen Kaige's fantasy-mystery film Legend of the Demon Cat. With her performance as Soong, Zhang was nominated for a Hundred Flowers Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Zhang co-starred in the 2018 romantic comedy drama The Evolution Of Our Love with Zhang Ruoyun. The same year, she co-starred with Yang Yang as the female lead Ying Huanhuan in the fantasy-action drama Martial Universe.
Zhang appeared as a flight attendant in the 2019 aviation disaster film The Captain. The same year, she played an aspiring environmentalist in the workplace romance drama Crocodile and Plover Bird.
Zhang made her first appearance in the CCTV New Year's Gala in 2020, performing a dance number titled "Quan." She will play the titular character in the historical film A'mai Joins the Army. The same year, she was cast in Wang Juan's wuxia drama Sword Snow Stride.
Zhang appeared in the third season of Sisters Who Make Waves, a Chinese survival reality television show in which female celebrities over 30 compete to debut in a ten-member girl group, from May 20 to August 5, 2022. She eventually finished tenth in the finals and made her acting debut in X-Sister.
