Yuko Oshima (, shima Yko, born October 17, 1988) is a Japanese actress and former member of the Japanese idol girl group AKB48, where she served as Team K captain. She was also a member of the Not Yet subunit of AKB48. She sang on the title tracks for all of AKB48's singles since "Aitakatta" in October 2006, in addition to the singles including the rock-paper-scissors tournaments. From 2009 until 2013, she finished in the top two of the annual AKB48 general polls. Ohta Production is now representing Oshima.
Biography
Oshima grew up in Mibu, Tochigi Prefecture, and was born in Yokohama. Her mother was born in Hokkaido. Oshima is half Japanese, half American. Six months after her family moved to Mibu, her parents split. Oshima lived with her father and saw her mother only once after the divorce. She signed with Central Kodomo Gekidan as a young performer in 1996. In 2005, she debuted as a junior idol in Doll's Vox, a short-lived idol project produced by The Alfee frontman Toshihiko Takamizawa. She was chosen from a pool of 12,000 hopefuls to join the AKB48 at their second audition to establish Team K in 2006. She started working full-time with the group in April, after it debuted with the single "Aitakatta" in October 2006.
On August 24, 2012, AKB48 announced a squad reorganisation and named Oshima leader of squad K.
On December 31, 2013, Oshima announced her departure from the group on Kohaku Uta Gassen. "Mae shika Mukanee," her final single as a member of AKB48 and as the centre performer, was released on February 26, 2014. On June 9, 2014, she graduated from AKB48 with a performance at the AKB48 theatre.
On July 29, 2021, Oshima revealed her marriage to Scarlet co-star and actor Kento Hayashi. On January 5, 2023, she gave birth to their first child.
General elections for AKB48
In the first five AKB48 general elections, Oshima finished in the top two. In 2009, she finished second overall, narrowly losing to Atsuko Maeda. In 2010, she won the most votes and was cast as the lead singer in the single "Heavy Rotation." She finished second behind Maeda in the 2011 general election. She received 108,837 votes in the 2012 general election and became the centre performer in the single "Gingham Check." In the 2013 general election, she received 136,503 votes and finished second to Rino Sashihara, who received 150,570 votes.
