Yook Sung-jae (Korean: ; Hanja: ; born May 2, 1995) is a South Korean singer, songwriter, actor, host, and entertainer who goes by the moniker Sungjae. He is a member of the boy band BtoB as well as its sub-group BtoB Blue. Aside from his group's activities, Yook has appeared in several television dramas, including Plus Nine Boys (2014), Who Are You: School 2015 (2015), The Village: Achiara's Secret (2015), Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016), and Mystic Pop-up Bar (2020), as well as reality shows such as Hitmaker, We Got Married, and Master in the House.
Yook's debut solo album, Yook O'Clock, was released on March 2, 2020.
Childhood and education
Yook was born in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on May 2, 1995. He has a single older sister. Yook comes from a wealthy family. His father is the CEO of a semiconductor-related IT corporation. His grandfather was the first person to introduce red carp to South Korea, and his grandmother ran a fishing farm in Paju.
He spent a month studying in both England and the Philippines. He graduated from Hanlim Multi Art School in 2014 after finishing high school there. He then went to Dongshin University and majored in Practical Music.
Career
Pre-debut
On August 10, 2010, he took part in the "2010 Cube Stars Party" stage performance.
On March 6, 2011, Yook appeared on stage with bandmate Seo Eunkwang, Im Hyun-sik, Jung Il-hoon, and supposed member Lee Min-woo in the "2011 CUBE Stars Party."
Yook competed in the JYP 6th Audition Final Round before signing with Cube Entertainment.
2012-2014: BtoB debut and solo activities
On March 21, 2012, Yook made his BtoB vocal debut with "Insane" and "Imagine." Yook co-hosted SBS MTV's music show The Show with bandmate Lee Min-hyuk on March 23, 2012.
Yook Sungjae made his acting debut in the 2013 drama Monstar (TV series) as a supporting cast member alongside his bandmates Lee Min-hyuk, Lee Chang-sub, and Im Hyun-sik. Arnold, a member of the boy idol group 'Men In Black,' was played by Sungjae. He appeared in four episodes: episodes 2, 6, 9, and 12. He appeared in the drama's OST Part 1 titled "Days Gone By," OST Part 2 "After Time Passes," and OST Part 7 "First Love" alongside BTOB's Lee Minhyuk, Lee Changsub, Im Hyunsik, and Beast's Yong Jun-hyung. In the same year, Sungjae and BTOB appeared as themselves, an idol group band BTOB, in episode 4 of hit drama The Heirs.
Yook appeared as Sungjoon/Ssukssuk, Na-younger jung's brother, in the 2014 television series Reply 1994. Yook was cast as a presenter for the show A Song For You in July 2014, alongside Kangin of Super Junior and Amber of f (x). He also appeared on the South Korean producer duo Jeong Hyeong-don and Defconn's Hitmaker season 1 and became a member of the program's project unit group, Big Byung, alongside Got7's Jackson and VIXX members N and Hyuk. After that, the group releases two singles: "Stress Come On" and "Ojingeo Doenjang" (Korean: ). The same year, he landed his first lead role in Plus Nine Boys, as a 19-year-old Judo athlete. From 2014 to 2015, he appeared on the reality show Real Men.
2015-2017: Acting and popularity rise
Yook made his breakthrough in the teen drama Who Are You: School 2015, co-starring with Kim So-hyun and Nam Joo-hyuk. He also collaborated with Park Hye-soo on the show's OST, "Love Song." After the show ended, he gained popularity and landed several endorsement deals. Yook then co-starred in the 2015 horror mystery series The Village: Achiara's Secret with Moon Geun-young. He received the "New Star award" for his performance in The Village: Achiara's Secret, and he and Kim So-hyun won the "Best Couple award" for Who Are You: School 2015.
Yook competed in King of Mask Singer in 2015 as Tired Bumblebee and received positive feedback for his performance. In the fourth season of We Got Married, he was paired with Red Velvet's Joy. The couple later released a duet titled "Young Love," with the pair contributing to the song's lyric composition with the assistance of his bandmate BTOB's Im Hyun-sik as producer. Yook and Joy won the "Best Couple" and "Best Male Rookie (in Variety) awards at the 2015 MBC Entertainment Awards. On May 7, 2016, the couple left We Got Married.
Yook joined the trio of main hosts Yook Sungjae-Jackson GOT7's Wang-and actress Kim Yoo-jung of the music program Inkigayo in September 2015 and left the show in May 2016. Sungjae was appointed as an ambassador of the King Sejong Institution in 2016. He also joined BTOB's first sub-unit, BTOB Blue, which debuted in September 2016.
Yook starred in the hit fantasy-romance drama Guardian: The Lonely and Great God from 2016 to 2017. He also appeared in the reality documentary Law of the Jungle, which was shot in Sumatra, Indonesia. He took part in the digital single project Piece of BtoB in August 2017. On August 30, he released the songs "Say It" and "Paradise," the latter of which he composed and wrote himself. He joined the cast of the reality show Master in the House in late 2017.
Yook suffered a back injury and would be hospitalized on December 29, 2017, according to Cube Entertainment. His lumbar disc herniation symptoms reportedly worsened during the concert 2017 BtoB Time - Our Concert. Yook attended the Master in the House press conference on January 5, 2018. This was his first appearance after recovering from a lumbar injury; after two weeks of rest, he gradually resumed his activities.

Yook in April of this year
Yook held his first fan meeting, Paradise, on February 11 at TICC in Taiwan, May 19 at Macpherson Stadium in Hong Kong, and July 13 in Manila, Philippines.
Yook was appointed as BtoB's new leader in 2019, on the occasion of their seventh anniversary. On July 12, Cube TV debuted "Lovely 95s," a new reality show starring Yook. It was revealed that he planned and organized a variety show with his close same-aged 95s friends, former Boyfriend members Youngmin, Kwangmin, and Minwoo, Teen Top's Ricky, and model Baek Kyung Do.
On December 19, 2019, Cube announced their plans for a new music project 3x2=6, in which Yook will release two songs every month for three months beginning in December 2019 and distribute them through various online music sites. Yook associated the number '6' (pronounced as "yook" in Korean) to his surname 'Yook' (), demonstrating only Yook Sung-wits. jae's The project has three themes: Singer is to showcase his ability as an artist by releasing his first produced song, Human is his desire to be loved for a long time, and BtoB Yook Sung-jae participated in the project along with his bandmates Jung Il-hoon and Peniel Shin. On December 26, 2019, the project began with the release of its first singles "Yook" (()) and "From Winter" ( ) as part of 3x2=6 PArt 1. "Yook" is described as a melodic modern-rock genre song in which Yook contributes lyrics and composes. Yook demonstrated his reversed charm with "W.A.U" (What About U) and "Chicken" for 3x2=6 Part 2. "Chicken" is a clever song with clever lyrics about how time passes, no matter how much trends change, just like (fried) chicken that everyone loves. The song will be available on January 16, 2020. On February 6, 2020, the project concluded with the first collaboration song between Yook and Ilhoon, "HMHN," and "Hypnotized," which was performed with Peniel at the 2018 BtoB Time - This Is Us concert.
Yook returned to the small screen in early 2020 as part of the main cast of Mystic Pop-up Bar, a JTBC drama based on the popular webtoon of the same name. Yook left the cast of Master in the House on February 18th, after two years on the show prior to his mandatory military service. Yook's debut solo album, Yook O'Clock, was released on March 2, 2020, and included six songs from 3X2=6 as well as the lead single "Come with the Wind."
Private life
Military service is required.
Yook announced on Instagram on May 3, 2020, that he will begin mandatory military service on May 11, 2020, which Cube confirmed. Yook will join the Ministry of National Defense military band after completing his five-week basic military training course at Nonsan Training Center, according to MyDaily.
Yook and Teen Top's Ricky performed "Love Blossom" (original song by K.Will) as part of their military service duty as a military band on May 7, 2021 at Seoul National Cemetery Spring Contact - Free Periodical Concert. The theme of the concert was "Waiting for normal daily life before the pandemic." On June 6, Yook and Major Jeong Dong-mi hosted the 66th Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony, which was held in front of the Memorial Tower at the Seoul National Cemetery by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (South Korea).
Yook announced that he will not return to his unit after his final military leave in October 2021, in accordance with the army's COVID-19 pandemic protocols. On November 14, 2021, he was officially discharged from the military.
Philanthropy
Yook participated in a charity auction in 2015 to benefit the Social Welfare Community Fund for Love, which helps low-income children. Yook donated $3 million to Jeonbuk National University Hospital, which was the filming location for The Village: Achiara's Secret, according to SBS in December 2015. The same year, he took part in the Korean Peninsula Briquette Sharing Campaign, donating briquettes to residents of Kowloon Village in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
