After being quoted in a widely read piece in a Spanish daily as claiming his most recent picture will be his final, Woody Allen has disputed rumours that he is retiring.
Allen, 86, had been speaking with La Vanguardia prior to the Paris filming of his newest movie, Wasp 22. According to a remark from him in the newspaper, "My plan, in principle, is not to produce more movies and focus on writing," he said, adding that his upcoming book was a novel.
"Woody Allen never claimed he was retiring, nor did he say he was writing another novel," according to a statement made on his representatives. He claimed that because he is a huge fan of the theatre experience, he was considering not creating any more movies because he does not particularly enjoy making movies that are released directly or very rapidly to streaming sites. He now has no plans to retire and is thrilled to be in Paris filming his upcoming film, which will be his 50th.

Allen was also described by La Vanguardia as claiming that Wasp 22 would be "exciting, dramatic, and also frightening," and that it would be "similar to" his 2005 movie Match Point.
In a June Instagram Live conversation with actor Alec Baldwin, Allen had revealed his frustration with the filmmaking process, saying: "A lot of the joy is gone. Currently, you make a movie, give it a few weeks in a theatre, and then it moves to streaming or pay per view. It is not equivalent. I don't find it to be as enjoyable.
In 2018, Allen's four film deal with Amazon Studios fell through as a result of increasing attention around Dylan Farrow, the director's adopted daughter, who claimed that he had sexually molested her. Allen has consistently refuted the allegations, and no charges were filed against him after two investigations were completed.
Following this, Allen's book Apropos of Nothing was dropped by its publishers Hachette; however, Arcade took it up and released it in 2020. Zero Gravity, his most recent collection of short stories, was also released by Arcade.
