Vaani Kapoor (born August 23, 1988) is an Indian film actress best known for her performances in Bollywood. She made her acting debut in the romantic comedy Shuddh Desi Romance, which was a critical and financial success, earning her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Kapoor took a three-year break after receiving criticism for her performances in the Tamil films Aaha Kalyanam (2014) and Befikre (2016). She has recently been in action films as a love interest, such as War (2019), and has received accolades for her performance as a transgender woman in the romantic comedy Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021).
Childhood and education
Kapoor was born into a Punjabi Hindu household in Delhi, India. Shiv Kapoor is a furniture exports entrepreneur, and Dimpy Kapoor is a former teacher turned marketing professional. She attended Mata Jai Kaur Public School in Ashok Vihar, North West Delhi. She later attended Indira Gandhi National Open University in Maidan Garhi, where she earned a bachelor's degree in tourism studies. She then interned at Oberoi Hotels & Resorts in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and later worked for ITC Hotel. Elite Model Management signed her for modeling gigs.
Career
In 2013, Kapoor promoted her film Shuddh Desi Romance alongside co-stars Sushant Singh Rajput and Parineeti Chopra.
Kapoor began her career in Hindi film by signing a three-picture agreement with Yash Raj Films. She was chosen for a supporting part in the romantic comedy Shuddh Desi Romance, opposite Sushant Singh Rajput and Parineeti Chopra, after an audition. The film addressed the issue of live-in relationships; it earned favorable reviews from critics, and Kapoor's portrayal of an outspoken teenager, Tara, was praised. According to Mohar Basu of Koimoi, Kapoor is "a pleasant debutant though she isn't an overtly powerful actress," while Madhureeta Mukherjee of The Times Of India thinks she is "impressive, pretty, and commands a good screen-presence." Shuddh Desi Romance grossed 76 crore (US$9.8 million) at the global box office and was a commercial success. Kapoor received the Best Female Debut award at the 59th Filmfare Awards.
The Tamil romantic comedy Aaha Kalyanam, an official remake of the 2010 Hindi film Band Baaja Baaraat, was Kapoor's next release. She was cast opposite Nani and had to learn Tamil for the film. When the film was released, critics hated it, and her acting was panned as well. In 2016, Kapoor co-starred with Ranveer Singh in Aditya Chopra's romantic comedy Befikre, which was set in Paris. She portrayed Shyra Gill, a French tourist guide of Indian heritage whose romantic relationships with Singh's character cause them to clash. The earned terrible reviews from critics and was a box office disappointment.
After a three-year hiatus, she returned to the big screen in the action movie War, opposite Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff. It was directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Yash Raj Films. War broke the record for the highest-opening day collection for a Bollywood film in India, earning over 53.35 crores nett domestically, and went on to become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2019, earning over 475 crores worldwide and 318 crores net domestically in India, thus entering the 300 Crore Club. However, she was chastised for her minimal screen time, and her presence was widely perceived as primarily to add glamour.
Kapoor then co-starred in the 2021 action thriller Bell Bottom with Akshay Kumar, her first film not produced by Yash Raj Films. She, like War, had a brief appearance as the male lead's love interest. According to the Hindustan Times, "Kapoor is charming as Akshay's onscreen wife, and for a change, she isn't just there as a trophy wife but complements his character well." In the same year, Kapoor co-starred with Ayushmann Khurrana in the love drama Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. She received recognition for her performance in the film as a transsexual woman. Hiren Kotwani of the Times of India wrote, "Kapoor sinks her teeth into her character from the word go and gives a no-holds-barred performance," complementing her chemistry with Khurrana.
Following that, Kapoor appeared in Shamshera (2022), a period drama starring Ranbir Kapoor. It garnered unfavorable feedback, and she was given minimal screen time once more. According to DNA India, "As the female lead, while Vaani Kapoor's Sona may not have a great character arc, she's absolutely owned every frame with ease and confidence."

I travel during my leisure hours, and I love going to Dubai, Singapore, European countries, and others too. My sister is in Dubai and I often go there to meet her. I love getting in my family time, and I also watch a lot of films and shows. Also since I love travelling, I go to other places whenever I have time.”
