Early years
Middleton was born on February 21, 1987, in Bristol, the daughter of Tina and Nigel Middleton. She has an older sister, Angel, and a younger brother, Josh. She was named "Tuppence" after her grandmother's childhood nickname for her mother. She grew up in Clevedon, Somerset. She described her younger self as shy, reclusive, and "geeky" at school, but "quite loud and brash" at home; she saw youth theatre as a "outlet" where she could be confident. She went to Bristol Grammar School and participated in school plays such as Guys and Dolls. She also attended Stagecoach, a performing arts school in Portishead. She appeared in several local drama productions, including a pantomime with her sister at Clevedon's Princes Hall. She went on to study acting at the Arts Educational School in London, where she graduated with honours.
Middleton's career took off after she appeared in the 2009 British comedy horror film Tormented. Her character, Justine Fielding, dates one of the most popular boys in school, only to discover that he and his friends were responsible for the death of a classmate. She has also appeared in advertisements for Extra chewing gum and Sky TV.
In 2010, she was nominated for Most Promising Newcomer at the London Evening Standard Film Awards, and she starred in Samuel Abrahams' BAFTA-nominated short film Connect. She portrayed Tanya Green in the British sitcom Friday Night Dinner in 2011 and Sarah in Sirens. She starred in the spy thriller Cleanskin in 2012.
She made her professional stage debut in The Living Room in 2013, before starring in Danny Boyle's psychological thriller Trance and delivering a critically acclaimed performance in the Black Mirror episode "White Bear" in 2014. She joined the main cast of Lilly and Lana Wachowski's Netflix science fiction series Sense8 in 2014, after working on their space opera film Jupiter Ascending (2015). (2015–2018).
In 2016, she portrayed Russian aristocrat Princess Hélène Kuragina in the BBC drama War & Peace. The series received positive reviews from critics. According to the Daily Express: "Tuppence Middleton, a rising star, plays the delightfully evil Hélène Kuragina, one half of the incestuous duo. In the first episode, viewers saw her brother get a little too intimate with his sibling before she turned her attention to Pierre and dug her claws into him. She is a vile character who will use and abuse Pierre without hesitation." Middleton's Hélène was described as "the naughtiest woman on TV right now" by Andrew Davies, who adapted War and Peace.
In 2018, she appeared in Vicky Jones' play The One at London's Soho Theatre before landing the role of Lucy in the 2019 feature film Downton Abbey, which she later reprised in Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022). She starred in the mystery drama Disappearance at Clifton Hill in 2019. This was quickly followed by the psychological horror Possessor (2020), the Netflix-distributed historical miniseries The Defeated (2020), also known as Shadowplay, and David Fincher's biographical drama Mank (2020), in which she played the wife of Citizen Kane co-writer Herman J. Mankiewicz (1941).
In 2020 and 2021, she narrated BBC World Service documentaries about the Spitfire and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh's life. She recently appeared in ITV1's drama Our House (2022) alongside Martin Compston and Rupert Penry-Jones, and she is set to appear in William Brent Bell's folk horror film Lord of Misrule with Ralph Ineson and Matt Stokoe.
Personal life
Middleton suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which she developed when she was 12 years old. In 2021, she conducted a series of interviews for BBC Radio 4 on the subject, in which she spoke with a clinical psychologist and a couple of other people suffering from the disorder. Middleton revealed that she "struggles with self-imposed routines that sometimes stop her leaving the house, as well as obsessive mental counting and compulsive checking behaviours". She also admitted to having emetophobia, or a fear of vomiting, which contributes to her excessive preoccupation with cleanliness.
Middleton gave birth to her first child with Swedish film director Mns Mrlind in August 2022, according to reports.
