First Rain
- by Lalit Naidu
From rejoice to reluctance, I woke up rubbing eyes
My lazy life had seen, yet another sunrise
When I looked past the window, missing was shade yellow
I wondered whether had under-slept, this over-sleeping fellow
The familiar smell of petrichore, lingered in the air
That the first rain had arrived, was the breezy message clear
I slid opened the window , inviting the atmosphere
That the first rain had arrived, was the breezy message clear
It was a respite from the roasting sun, as the mercury fell
The skin was soothed, senses confused, by the low temperature levels
The rain had been scanty, was just a passing shower
Nonetheless, to resurrect the dead earth, it was enough a power
The desert-ly roads and streets sun-baked
Were washed afresh, in the drizzle's wake
Lone birds splashed in the lone puddles: with a mischievous flare
That the rain had arrived, was their rejoicing message clear
Sun, soon revived, the roads soon dried
The air got back its arid history
Yet the memory of moistness survived
It had woven it's magic mystery
Like a splendid sprouted seed, the hope freshly germinated
Evasive monsoon, had conceded that summer is all but terminated
The Indian season of romance, had started with a cheer
That the first rain had arrived, was the romantic message clear
The cuckoo's songs from mango trees, was a picture of ecstasy sheer
That the first rain had arrived, was the melodious message clear
