Serenay Sarkaya (Turkish pronunciation: [seenaj sakaja]; born July 1, 1992) is a Turkish model and actress. She rose to prominence as a result of her roles in the Turkish remake of The O.C., Lale Devri, Fi, and the fantasy series ahmaran.
She graduated from Istanbul's Fine Arts High School's theatre department. She made her acting debut at the age of fourteen with a minor role in the film aşkn (2006), which was followed by a role in Plajda (2008). Peri Masal, a fantasy children's series, was her first leading role (2008). Sofia in the crime comedy series Adanal was her breakthrough role (2008–10).
She has appeared in the films Behzat. Ankara Yanyor and kimizin Yerine with Nejat şler. Sarkaya has been performing in Alice Müzikali, a musical adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, since 2019. She has won numerous awards and received critical acclaim, including two Golden Butterfly Awards.
She entered a beauty pageant at the age of fifteen and received a special award from the jury at the European Youth Beauty Competition. Sarkaya was later crowned Miss Turkey 2010's first runner-up. In addition to her acting career, she has appeared in several commercials and is the face of several brands. She was named Woman of the Year by GQ Turkey in 2014.
Early years
Serenay Sarkaya was born in Ankara on July 1, 1992, to Seyhan Umran and Mustafa Sarikaya. She lived in Antalya with her family until she was seven years old, when her parents divorced. She moved to Istanbul with her mother after her father remarried. In an interview, she later described her experience growing up without her father: "A father is a unique factor in the development of a young girl. Growing up without your father is a significant life experience ". Sarkaya knew she wanted to be an actress and model at the time she and her mother were deciding where to live, which influenced their decision to settle in Istanbul. Sarkaya attended and graduated from the Fine Arts High School's theatre department. She did not continue on to university.
Sarkaya enjoys volleyball and basketball, and she is also interested in tennis and Latin dance.
She won a special prise from the jury at the European Junior Beauty Contest in Czechia when she was fifteen years old.
Career in film and television from 2006 to 2012.
Sarkaya made her acting debut in the 2006 film aşkn, directed by ahin Alpaslan. In 2008, she appeared in a Turkcell commercial before moving on to her second film, Plajda, which was produced by Sinan etin and directed by Murat eker.
The same year, Sarkaya landed her first leading television role in Celal imen's Peri Masal, in which she played a fairy godmother. She also appeared in the etin-produced and Deniz Ergun-directed series Limon Aac. Sarkaya's character was dropped from the plot after the tenth episode.
Sarkaya first appeared in the TV series Adanal, created by Tayfun Güneyer and directed by Adnan Güler, in 2008. She portrayed a Greek-Turkish girl and received praise for her mixed Greek-Adana accent.
Sarkaya represented the national capital, Ankara, in the Miss Turkey beauty pageant on April 1, 2010. She finished as the first runner-up to the eventual winner, Gizem Memiç of Gaziantep, and was chosen to represent Turkey in the Miss Universe competition. She turned down this opportunity because she wanted to continue her acting career, and Memiç took her place.
Sarkaya left the cast of Adanal in the second season to star in Lale Devri, which was produced by ükrü Avşar and directed by Murat Düzgünolu. She sang a song in one episode of the show that drew audience attention and led to offers to record an album. She stated in an interview: "The bids are correct. The fees are reasonable. However, I will not sing. My profession is acting ".
Sarkaya appeared in the short film Hoşçakal in 2011. She left Lale Devri at the start of the third season in 2012.
Behzat. Ankara Yanyor, Medcezir, and other projects from 2013 to the present
Sarkaya began filming Behzat. Ankara Yanyor, a film based on the television series Behzat. Bir Ankara Polisiyesi, in May 2013. In the same year, she co-starred with Atay Ulusoy in the Turkish series Medcezir, which is based on the American show The O.C. Ece Yörenç wrote the screenplay, and Ali Bilgin directed the series. Mira Beylice, Sarkaya's character, was based on Marissa Cooper, a character from the original series. She appeared in an Elidor commercial with her Medcezir co-star Hazar Ergüçlü in 2014. After signing a two-year contract, she later became the face of Mavi Jeans. Sarkaya shot commercials with Brazilian model Francisco Lachowski to promote their spring-summer collection. Sarkaya filmed another commercial for Mavi in 2016 with Barbara Palvin. Sarkaya appeared in front of the camera with Kerem Bürsin for the 2015 spring-summer collection, and their singing received a positive response from audiences.
Sarkaya appeared in the show Fi, which is based on a series of novels by Azra Kohen, in 2017-18. Puhutv streamed Fi, one of the first major Turkish television productions, online.
She was the Head & Shoulders brand ambassador from 2017 to 2018, filming various campaigns and awareness projects.
In 2019, she made her stage debut as Alice in Alice Müzikali, a musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The show premiered in February 2019 and will return for a second season in September 2019. After a brief hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alice returned to the stage on February 7, 2022.
Sarkaya was cast in the biopic Bergen, which follows the life of singer Belgin Sarlmşer. She left the project, however, due to difficulties caused by the pandemic and other factors. She will be Bulgari's first Turkish brand ambassador in 2021.
