Bullying and legal problems
On July 28, 2012, several T-ara members allegedly sent out tweets that were interpreted as mocking references to Ryu. On July 30, an official announcement was made regarding these tweets and a "major announcement about T-ara," revealing Ryu would no longer be a member of the group. Following the announcement of her abrupt contract termination with Core Contents Media, rumours of severe bullying by other T-ara members surfaced on the internet and in the media, sparking intense public interest and controversy. Some members of the public believed Ryu was mistreated by the other members of T-ara and her agency, and an outcry from T-fan ara's community resulted in the group's shutdown as well as the suspension of the members' activities, resulting in a huge blow to the group's popularity.
In 2017, a former T-ara employee claimed that Ryu and her sister Ryu Hyo-young were the real bullies in the 2012 T-ara scandal. Soon after, more staff members came forward with claims that Ryu had been disrespectful to other members as well as stylists, and that she had lied about the severity of her injury in order to gain sympathy. Ryu denied the rumours at first, but later admitted that some of them were true. Ryu deleted her Instagram account after receiving a flood of negative messages on social media and having her role in Hello, My Twenties! 2 reduced to a cameo.
