An ex-adviser to former President Trump is on trial for alleged collusion with the United Arab Emirates, and former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is slated to testify on his behalf.
The attorneys for billionaire businessman Tom Barrack revealed in a letter filed on Saturday that the Department of Justice had summoned Tillerson to testify as a witness next week. Insider obtained a letter from Barrack's attorneys in which they requested that Tillerson be called to the stand on Monday so that they may cross-examine him.
Between 2017 to 2018, Tillerson was Trump's Secretary of State.
It has been alleged that Barrack acted as a foreign agent for the UAE, obstructed justice, and lied to the FBI. In July of last year, charges were brought against Barrack, and his trial just started this week in Brooklyn, New York.
Federal prosecutors claim that Barrack tried to influence Trump's foreign policy decisions by inserting wording favourable to the UAE into the president's remarks.
In addition to being a member of Trump's Presidential Inaugural Committee, Barrack provided informal campaign advice to Obama.
Both Tillerson's office and the US Attorney's Office in New York did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
