Ranveer Singh Bhavnani (born 6 July 1985) is an Indian actor who works primarily in Hindi films. He has received several awards, including five Filmfare Awards, and is one of the highest-paid Indian actors, appearing on Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2012.
Singh made his acting debut in Yash Raj Films' romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat after graduating from Indiana University Bloomington. The film was a critical and commercial success, and he was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He received praise for his performance as a melancholy thief in the drama Lootera (2013), and he rose to prominence through his collaborations with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the first of which was in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013). In Bhansali's period dramas Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018), he received critical acclaim for his performances as Bajirao I and Alauddin Khilji, respectively. For the former, he received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, and for the latter, he received the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. These, along with the action film Simmba (2018), in which he starred, are among the highest-grossing Indian films. He also won Best Actor at Filmfare for his performances as an aspiring rapper in the musical drama Gully Boy (2019) and as Kapil Dev in the sports film 83. (2021).
Singh has also hosted the television game show The Big Picture (2021-2022) and is a brand and product endorser. He is married to Deepika Padukone, a frequent co-star. Off-screen, he is well-known for his extravagant fashion sense.
Childhood and education
Ranveer Singh Bhavnani was born on July 6, 1985, to Anju and Jagjit Singh Bhavnani in Bombay, Maharashtra, India (now Mumbai). During India's partition, his grandparents relocated to Bombay from Karachi, Sindh (now Pakistan). Ritika Bhavnani is his elder sister. Singh is the paternal grandson of character actress Chand Burke, and his wife Sunita Kapoor (née Bhavnani) is related to actor Anil Kapoor's family. Singh explains that he dropped the surname Bhavnani because it was "too long, too many syllables," undermining his brand as a "saleable commodity."
Singh had always wanted to be an actor and had taken part in a number of school plays and debates. However, after joining H.R. After attending the College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai, Singh realized that breaking into the film industry was not easy. Singh chose creative writing over acting because he thought it was "too far-fetched." In 2008, he moved to the United States and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Telecommunications from Indiana University Bloomington. At university, he decided to take acting classes and major in theatre.
After finishing his studies and returning to Mumbai in 2007, Singh worked as a copywriter for a few years at agencies such as O&M and J. Walter Thompson is an actor. He was also an assistant director before leaving to pursue acting. He then made the decision to send his portfolio to directors. He would go to all kinds of auditions but would only get calls for minor roles: "Everything was so bleak. It was very frustrating. There were times when I wondered if I was doing the right thing or not."
Career
Breakthrough (2010–2014) (2010–2014)
Singh auditioned for the lead role in Maneesh Sharma's Band Baaja Baaraat, a romantic comedy produced by Yash Raj Films, in 2010. Producer Aditya Chopra cast him opposite Anushka Sharma after being impressed by his audition. Singh portrayed Bittoo Sharma as a typical Delhi boy. He spent time with students on the Delhi University campus to prepare for the role. Despite trade journalists' reservations about the film's commercial appeal, it became a sleeper hit. Anupama Chopra of NDTV praised Singh's performance, writing that he was "pitch perfect in the role of the uncouth but good-hearted small town slacker." Singh was named Best Male Debut at the annual Filmfare Awards.
Following the success of Band Baaja Baaraat, Singh signed on for Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, a romantic comedy directed by Maneesh Sharma and co-starring Anushka Sharma. He played Ricky Bahl, a conman who con girls for a living but eventually meets his match. According to Singh, the title character appeared in the film in various avatars, including a chirpy, entertaining side and a sinister side. According to Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India, "Ranveer is, well, Ranveer: your average Joe kind of hero who looks convincing enough as Sunny, Deven, Iqbal, Ricky, and his various avatars." Singh received critical acclaim for his performance in Vikramaditya Motwane's period drama Lootera (2013), which also starred Sonakshi Sinha. A variation on O. The film is based on Henry's short story The Last Leaf and follows Pakhi Roy Chowdhury, a young Bengali woman who falls in love with Varun Shrivastava, a conman posing as an archaeologist. According to CNN-Rajeev IBN's Masand, Singh "brings a quiet sensitivity to Varun, and occasionally a smoldering intensity. Offering a finely internalized performance, he leaves a lasting impression."
In 2013, Singh appeared with Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali at an event for Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela.
Singh then co-starred with Deepika Padukone in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, as Ram, a Gujarati boy based on Romeo. Singh's performance in Band Baaja Baaraat impressed Bhansali, who decided to cast him in the film. Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, as well as Singh's performance, received positive reviews from critics. Rohit Khilnani, writing for India Today, stated that the film proved that he would be a star. The film was Singh's biggest commercial success, grossing $2.02 billion (US$25 million) worldwide. Singh was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Singh appeared in Ali Abbas Zafar's Gunday in 2014, alongside Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Irrfan Khan as a Bengali criminal. Singh's screen presence was praised by Variety's David Chute, who wrote that he "tucks the movie's center of interest under his arm and takes it with him — even though he has the could-be-thankless "good brother" role." In addition, critic Rohit Khilnani regarded Singh's chemistry with Kapoor as the film's most valuable asset. Gunday was Singh's biggest box office opener, and it eventually became a box-office success, grossing $1 billion (US$13 million) worldwide. Following a cameo in Finding Fanny, Singh starred as a gangster in Shaad Ali's underwhelming crime drama Kill Dil alongside Parineeti Chopra and Ali Zafar.
seasoned performer (2015–2019)
Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), directed by Zoya Akhtar and co-produced by her brother Farhan Akhtar, starred Singh alongside Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, and Priyanka Chopra as the younger sibling of a dysfunctional Punjabi business family who aspires to be a pilot. Kunal Guha, writing for Mumbai Mirror, described Singh as the film's "surprise element," praising his "immaculate comic timing" and noting his subtlety. The film underperformed commercially. He then worked with Bhansali again in the period drama Bajirao Mastani (2015), alongside Padukone and Chopra. He played Bajirao I, for which he shaved his head and locked himself in a hotel room for 21 days to prepare. Singh "brings his character to life and does so with both machismo and grace," according to Raja Sen, who praised him for perfecting his character's gait and accent. The film grossed 3.5 billion rupees (US$44 million), making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time, and earned Singh the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
Singh co-starred in Aditya Chopra's comedy-romance Befikre with Vaani Kapoor in 2016. He portrayed Dharam Gulati, a stand-up comedian whose romantic liaisons with Kapoor's character cause them to clash. Befikre, which was set in Paris, was Chopra's fourth project. Singh acted in a naked scene for it, which is unusual in an Indian film. Variety's Jay Weissberg called the film a "overly energetic twist on the old friends with benefits theme" and criticized Singh's "manic behavior." It did poorly at the box office.
After a one-year hiatus, Singh returned to the big screen as Alauddin Khilji, a ruthless Muslim king in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period drama Padmaavat (2018), co-starring Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, his third collaboration with Bhansali and Padukone. Right-wing Hindu organizations speculated that the film distorted historical facts and threatened the cast and crew with violence. The film's release date was pushed back and it was only allowed to be shown after several changes were made to it. The film's misogynistic and regressive themes were criticized by Ankur Pathak of HuffPost, but Singh was praised for his "astute brilliance" in depicting Khilji's bisexuality. According to Rajeev Masand, he "plays the part with the sort of grotesque flamboyance that makes it difficult to look at anyone or anything else when he's on screen." Padmaavat was the most expensive Hindi film ever made at the time, with a production budget of 2 billion rupees (US$25 million). With a worldwide gross of over 5.7 billion (US$71 million), it is Singh's highest-grossing release and one of India's highest-grossing films. He won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor (which he shared with Ayushmann Khurrana for Andhadhun) and was nominated for Best Actor at the ceremony.
Simmba, based on the Telugu-language film Temper (2015), co-starred Sara Ali Khan and Sonu Sood, and marked Singh's first collaboration with filmmaker Karan Johar, who co-produced the film with Shetty. Despite his dislike for the film, Uday Bhatia of Mint praised Singh for playing his "cardboard creation" of a character with a "underlying sweetness that renders it more winsome than Devgn's Singham's humourless masculinity." Simmba became Singh's second highest-earning Indian film of 2018, grossing $4 billion (US$50 million) worldwide.
Singh collaborated again with Zoya Akhtar on Gully Boy (2019), a musical based on the lives of street rappers Divine and Naezy. Singh discovered little in common with his character, a poor man who aspires to be a rapper, and spent time with both Divine and Naezy in preparation. He sang his own rap songs and was pleased that the film highlighted India's underground music scene. The film received its world premiere at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival. Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter praised him for having a "pleasingly full emotional range that extends to drama and hip-hop," while Baradwaj Rangan of Film Companion praised his ghetto accent and thought his understated performance was a "superb showreel for his range." Gully Boy received a record 13 Filmfare Awards, and Singh was nominated for another Best Actor award.
Variations in the commercial environment (2020–present)
Singh hosted the Colors TV game show The Big Picture in 2021, and he appeared in an extended cameo as Simmba in Shetty's action film Sooryavanshi. Singh went on to play cricketer Kapil Dev in Kabir Khan's 83, a sports film about the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Originally scheduled for a 2020 release, 83 was postponed several times due to casting and pre-production issues, and then again due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The film received positive reviews, with particular praise for Singh's portrayal of Dev. The film had a worldwide gross of 190.86 crore (US$24 million) despite being made on a budget of 270 crore (US$34 million). Singh won his third Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his performance.
Jayeshbhai Jordaar, a satire about female infanticide in India, was Singh's first film release in 2022. Firstpost's Anna M.M. Vetticad disliked the film but praised him for "transforming his body, body language and demeanor, posture, walk, gestures, and entire personality" for the role, similar to how he "metamorphosed" to play Dev in 83. Following that, he played dual roles in Rohit Shetty's ensemble comedy Cirkus (2022), which was based on William Shakespeare's play Comedy of Errors. Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in called Singh's performance "consistently lacklustre" in a scathing review. Cirkus and Jayeshbhai Jordar were both commercially unsuccessful.
Singh will next be seen in Karan Johar's romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, in which he will co-star with Alia Bhatt.
Personal life and public perception
In August 2012, Singh began dating Deepika Padukone, his co-star in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. The couple announced their engagement in October 2018. The following month, they married in Lake Como, Italy, in traditional Konkani Hindu and Sikh Anand Karaj ceremonies (Singh's paternal grandfather is Sikh).
Singh has appeared on Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2012, rising to seventh place in 2019. That year, the magazine estimated his annual earnings to be 1.18 billion (US$15 million), ranking him as the country's fifth-highest-paid actor. He was also named by GQ as one of the 50 most influential young Indians in 2017 and 2019. In 2019, India Today named him one of the country's 50 most powerful people, and The Indian Express named him to a similar list in 2023.
Singh, in addition to his acting career, launched his own record label, IncInk, in 2019 to promote local musicians. He is an ambassador for Adidas, Head & Shoulders, Ching's, Jack & Jones, Thums Up, and MakeMyTrip. Singh is also an investor in Vineeta Singh's new cosmetics company, Sugar Cosmetics. In 2019, Duff & Phelps estimated his brand value to be US$63 million, ranking him fourth among Indian celebrities. He peaked at second place in 2022, with a brand value of US$158.3 million.
Singh is known for his flamboyant fashion sense off-screen. Singh posed naked in a photoshoot for Paper magazine in July 2022. A month later, he was summoned for questioning by Mumbai Police in connection with several police complaints filed against him after the photos went viral on social media.
